Former President George W. Bush on Wednesday offered fresh criticism of the withdrawal of American and NATO troops from Afghanistan, as the U.S.-backed government in Kabul appears increasingly imperiled and Taliban fighters continue to make rapid gains across the country. Asked whether the drawdown was a mistake, Bush told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle in an interview: “I think it is, yeah. Because I think the consequences are going to be unbelievably bad and sad.” Bush, whose administration launched the U.S. military invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001, specifically cited the plight of Afghan women and girls whom he said could

Afghanistan was given 20 years of American blood, sweat and tears to give them a taste of freedom. That they are so willing to give it up without a fight shows that it was a waste of time, blood and money. We should have gotten in and out. How many lives were lost for nothing, destroyed by massive injuries and PTSD? I feel sorry for Americans tragically impacted by their service to this country and the translators and their families who helped us but no one else. W should crawl in a hole and die in shame for what he did to so many young men and their families!

The purpose of the Afghan war was essentially to punish them for harboring the terrorists (al Qaeda) that attacked us on 9/11. It morphed into trying to install a democratic government and a peacekeeping mission. It was a classic case of mission creep and quagmire. If the Taliban take control again and start harboring terrorists who are planning to attack up, the withdrawal will be a failure. But if it's just the Taliban, with all of their awfulness, returning, it's no different than it was for many years before 9/11. We weren't planning to attack them for their oppression of women and girls. I wish we could have eradicated the Taliban, but ultimately, it's up to the people of Afghanistan to fight that battle.
