Scientists are asking for help to rename racist insects, as they seek to remove terms which are "inappropriate or offensive." The Entomological Society of America (ESA) announced in June the common names for the moth Lymantria dispar and the ant Aphaenogaster araneoides, "Gypsy moth" and "Gypsy ant," had been removed from their Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List. (Snip) In March, they set out new policies regarding acceptable names, to exclude any new terms which are "referencing ethnic or racial groups and names that might stoke fear; the policies also discourage geographic references, particularly for invasive species." California issued a new rule on Monday banning unmasked students from school campuses but then rescinded it just hours later. The California Department of Health published its COVID-19 public health guidance for K-12 schools in the Golden State for the 2021-2022 school year, including a new mandate that said students "are required" to wear face masks indoors, unless they are exempt due to a medical condition, and "schools must exclude students from campus" if they refuse to do so. The guidance, which was initially published on Monday afternoon and took immediate effect, noted that schools "should offer alternative educational opportunities

Jeffrey Epstein's newly discovered 1997 address book, published by Insider on Tuesday, connects dozens of new names to Epstein and traces previously known relationships back to the 1990s. One of the new names belongs to Cristina Greeven Cuomo, a New York editor and entrepreneur. She married Chris Cuomo, a CNN anchor and brother of Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York, in 2001. The book lists Greeven Cuomo under a minor misspelling of her birth name, Cristina Greeven. Her entry refers to Manhattan File, a New York society magazine she published after her father purchased it in 1994. The same entry

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden was at a public transit station in Wisconsin, talking about repairing roads and bridges, when he shifted gears and began defending his plan to send money to parents for each minor child, payments some critics call a “giveaway.” (Snip) The White House and communications experts say Biden’s whispering is just this veteran politician’s old-school way of trying to make a connection while emphasizing a point. Biden's critics on the right as well as some late-night TV talk show hosts say the whispers are “creepy” and “weird." Conservatives use the dramatic soft talk to fuel the

Elitch Gardens is now requiring teenagers under the age of 16 to be accompanied by an adult — a rule change brought on by troublemaking teens, the park says. “Elitch Gardens strives to maintain a fun, family-friendly environment and this policy modification better enables us to continue to do so,” the Denver amusement park said in a statement Saturday. “The park has experienced some unsupervised and unruly teenagers attending this summer that can alter this environment.” Previously, children 12 years old and younger had to be chaperoned by an adult. The policy change bumps that age up by three years

A Queens community activist challenging New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney in the 2022 midterm elections set a new fundraising record for progressive primary candidates in the first quarter of her campaign, her latest financial disclosure shows. Rana Abdelhamid, 28, raked in more than $411,265 from 5,000 individual donors between her April 14 campaign kickoff and June 30, according to the records, which Abdelhamid’s campaign provided to the Daily News ahead of releasing them Monday. That’s the largest first campaign quarter haul for any primary challenger backed by Justice Democrats, the grassroots progressive group that helped elect New York Reps. Alexandria

For vice president, Kamala Harris checked all the boxes. But just because she made perfect political sense as President Biden’s running mate did not mean her elevation would work out for the Democrats. So far, the reviews are not good. But, barring a political Chernobyl, the Democratic Party is stuck with her as its nominee in 2024 or 2028. Readers of this column know that I predicted Harris would be Biden’s running mate well in advance of the Democratic convention. As VP nominations are mostly about unifying the party, an old white male moderate could only fully placate the progressive

The massive COVID rescue package President Joe Biden signed back in March — the same law that included $1,400 stimulus and the monthly payments for families that start next week — is now offering free health insurance to millions of Americans, through the end of 2021. The benefit's zero-premium health plans became available on July 1, with no income limits for qualifying. But there is one major eligibility requirement. (Snip) The health plans in the free offer are provided by private insurers, and come with low or even no copayments or deductibles. Dunedin, Florida — At age 97, Joe Hall walked into Causeway Alterations and asked if someone could make him a Navy uniform. In his younger years, Hall served in World War II as a Navy Petty Officer First Class. "I love the uniform. I love my country and I'm so happy I was able to serve," he said. He was on a destroyer escort, where he made some of the best friends of his life — and lost a few, too. They're all gone now, which is why Joe wanted that uniform — for when he sees them again. SAN FRANCISCO -- The ground is still shaking south of Lake Tahoe with more than 340 aftershocks since the magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit just before 4 p.m. Thursday. The quake jolted both sides of the California-Nevada state line, tossed boulders onto a major roadway and was felt as far off as Las Vegas and even San Francisco, with days of aftershocks predicted, authorities said. The quake was centered south of Lake Tahoe near Walker, a rural community of a few hundred households in the eastern Sierra Nevada. No major damage or injuries were reported, authorities said. It was followed by dozens
