Biden rescue plan for Afghan allies
welcomed by lawmakers, some still
concerned it’s not fast enough

Some lawmakers were skeptical, others cautiously optimistic, when President Biden announced Thursday plans to begin evacuating Afghan interpreters and other allies as the U.S. military complete a pullout by the end of next month. Mr. Biden said flights will begin later this month to relocate those who have applied for Special Immigrant Visas, a State Department program designed for U.S. enablers, to third countries outside to await approval to come to America. “There is a home for you in the United States if you so choose, and we will stand with you just as you stood with us,” the president said.

Comments:

The gift that keeps on giving: $2.26 trillion of taxpayer money borrowed and wasted on a people who immediately surrendered to their supposed enemy, turning over their US taxpayer-funded weapons in the bargain. And now, just as Dubya's father did with the Iraqis, we're going to import unknown operators into the USA, possibly to attack us in the future, and certainly to burden us further when their entire extended families eligible for refugee status.

Sorry OP but I respectfully disagree. These men put their and their families lives at risk to help our soldiers in their time of need. Half the world is invading us through the southern border. The least we can do is assist those who helped us. It's the only thing Biden has done that's responsible as far as I'm concerned.

Interpreters risked their lives to help US troops. They have been vetted and checked for security. Biden will slow walk this mission because it is the right thing to do. .....and he never does the right thing.

The policies of various government administrations have been so successful that we have had to move their allies here from Somalia, Iraq, Vietnam, now Afghanistan. This makes the verdict on our government undeniably awful. Please recruit government leaders from outside the elite universities from now on, and away from scions of previous failures.

To the dubious extent that their loyalties were undivided, the translators aimed, with massive US assistance, to free their own country from their fellow Muslims. It's quite s stretchy to say they were there simply to help the USA, which had no business being in Afghanistan to begin with. Relocate them to a friendly Muslim nation where they can live among their own. Also: "Refugee resettlement costs American taxpayers nearly $9 billion every five years, according to research, and each refugee costs taxpayers about $133,000 over the course of their lifetime. Within five years, an estimated 16 percent of all refugees admitted will need housing assistance paid for by taxpayers." https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2021/02/04/taxpayer-funded-refugee-contractors-cheer-joe-biden-surging-refugee-resettlement-by-960/

Isn't it ironic, we had President Trump - A Man of Action, who got things done while both party's fought him tooth and nail - nether willing to give him the time of day and yet here we have a 78 yer old dementia patient occupying the WH and both party's perfectly willing to work with him, while the GOP offers little or no opposition. That should tell us all we know to know about the Republicans going forth. As long as their leadership has a seat at the table, they really don't care who's running the country. Personally, I'm never voting for the GOP ever again. They disappoint every time they're handed power and seem to enjoy being in 2nd place, even when they're in 1st place.

The U.S. Capitol Police will begin fielding military surveillance equipment as part of sweeping security upgrades as the police force pivots towards becoming “an intelligence-based protective agency” following the Jan. 6 attack. That seems like a lot for one person,' O'Brien said to Harris.(Snip) Then she jokingly said, 'Yeah, maybe I don't say "no" enough,' and then laughed.

The administration of Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania has ordered counties not to comply with a Republican state senator’s request for voting data to be used in an audit of the 2020 election. The Pennsylvania Department of State said in a two-page directive that the request by state Sen. Doug Mastriano of Franklin County, an ally of former President Donald Trump, “jeopardizes the security and integrity” of the counties’ voting systems. " Such access by third parties undermines chain of custody requirements and strict access limitations necessary to prevent both intentional and inadvertent tampering with electronic voting systems,” the department said.

A suspect charged in connection with the drive-by shooting that wounded three undercover law enforcement officers in Chicago claimed he mistook them for members of a rival gang, according to a federal indictment filed Thursday. Eugene “Gen Gen” McClaurin, 28, was accused of shooting two federal agents and a local cop as they drove in an unmarked police vehicle on Chicago’s South Side early Wednesday. After his arrest, McClaurin told investigators he followed the officers because he thought they were part of an opposing gang, the indictment states. He then allegedly admitted to pulling up alongside the officers’ vehicle, rolling down his window and opening fire.

Bug experts are getting rid of the name 'gypsy moth' because some Roma people consider it to be an ethnic slur. The Entomological Society of America, which oversees the common names of bugs, is getting rid of the common name of that critter and the lesser-known gypsy ant. The group this week announced that for the first time it changed a common name of an insect because it was offensive. In the past they've only reassigned names that weren't scientifically accurate. 'It's an ethnic slur to begin with that's been rejected by the Romani people a long time ago,' said society president Michelle S. Smith.

Britons will need Covid certificates to enter pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs under plans to stop a fourth wave of the virus in the autumn. Experts hope the move will boost the stalling vaccination rates among young people and stave off another surge in cases. The proposals would see entertainment venues in England demanding vaccination passports as proof of either two doses or a recent negative test. The Government's certification review release earlier in the week said although the so-called vaccine passports would not be mandated now, it did not rule out the prospect if England faces 'a difficult situation in autumn or winter'.
