Katharine Lee Bates, a 33-year-old English literature teacher at Wellesley College, was on “a merry expedition up Pike’s Peak” in Colorado in 1893 when she looked out “over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies.”In an instant, she said, “the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind.” Those lines became “America the Beautiful” — a song that will feature today in countless parades and band concerts.Everyone knows the first verse, with its evocation of “amber waves of grain” and “purple mountain majesties.” But how many have read — let alone sung — the entire song?

PBS has divided opinion with its decision to have Vanessa Williams sing the 'Black National Anthem' during its July 4 celebration, in a nod to Juneteenth being made a federal holiday. The singer and actress, who was the first black woman to be crowned Miss America, will perform the song 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' while hosting PBS's 41st 'A Capitol Fourth' annual celebration, which airs Sunday. The song was first written as a poem in 1900 by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson and has long held the nickname as the 'Black National Anthem.'

Tyson Foods Inc is recalling nearly 8.5 million pounds of frozen, fully cooked chicken over fears of possible exposure to a harmful bacteria, the company said in a statement late on Saturday. The products were made at a plant in Missouri between Dec 26, 2020 and April 13, 2021, according to the statement.“While there is no conclusive evidence that the products were contaminated at the time of shipment, the voluntary recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution,” the U.S. meat processor said.

WASHINGTON— As it has been for nearly 16 months, longer than any time in the nation’s history, the U.S. Capitol is closed to most public visitors. The one-two punch of the coronavirus pandemic that shuttered the Capitol’s doors in the spring of 2020 and the deadly insurrection by then-President Donald Trump’s supporters on Jan. 6 has left the icon of American democracy unopen to all but a select few.As the rest of the nation emerges this July Fourth holiday from the pandemic for cookouts and fireworks that President Joe Biden is encouraging from the White House, the people’s house faces new threats of violence, virus variants and a more difficult moment.

Country rock star Aaron Lewis’s patriotic anthem “Am I the Only One” soared up the iTunes charts, passing Big Red Machine’s “Renegade” featuring Taylor Swift, over the July 4th weekend. Two versions of Lewis’s song, the explicit version and radio edit, took the second and third spots on iTunes’ Top Songs on Saturday, pushing Swift to number five.(Song List) The patriotic anthem, dedicated to “all the patriots,” calls out left-wing activists and slams those who tore statutes down during the Black Lives Matter riots last year.(Photo) “Am I the only one here tonight, shakin’ my head and think’ something ain’t right,” Lewis sings. “Is it just me,

Former President Donald Trump demanded to know who killed Ashli Babbitt during a rally in Florida at the Sarasota Fairgrounds on Saturday night.Trump also pointed out the hypocrisy of so many January 6 protesters being imprisoned, while the same was not true about the Black Lives Matter and Antifa militants that destroyed cities across the nation during the summer of 2020.“Who shot Ashli Babbitt? Who shot Ashli Babbitt? Who? Who Shot Ashli Babbitt?” Trump asked. “We all saw the hand. We saw the gun.”

America’s being hit on all sides this weekend. While the country celebrates the Fourth of July, three major catastrophes are threatening the nation on all coasts. While two of the catastrophes are “natural disasters” one is manmade and all could have disastrous repercussions. As Toby Keith writes in his new song, “Happy Birthday America (Whatever’s Left of You)”.
The East CoastFlorida, which is still reeling from the Surfside condo collapse, is set to be hit by Tropical Storm Elsa on Sunday and Monday. It has already wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and is said to be gaining strength. Rescue teams for the Surfside complex have already been called off and the state

Former President Donald Trump accused New York prosecutors of behaving like a 'communist dictatorship targeting political opponents' as he railed against criminal charges leveled against his company during a rally in Florida. He unloaded his fury after a week that included seeing an employee paraded into court in handcuffs with a fiery rally speech on Saturday night in Sarasota, Florida.Trump hit all his favorite targets, from immigration to fake news, but reserved special fury for prosecutors in New York.'It's reminiscent of a communist dictatorship targeting their political opponents ... fabricating charges to try and silence them, abusing the justice system and leaking out information on a daily basis

Actor Bill Pullman attempts to lift America’s soul and remind us who we really are in a rousing “Independence Day”-themed ad called “Go Fourth America,” reprising his famous speech from the alien-fighting, patriotic 1996 movie.Twenty-five years later, Pullman is once again behind the podium as President Thomas Whitmore from the movie “Independence Day” that also starred Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith. But this time, instead of fighting off aliens who want to eradicate humanity, Pullman is calling on America to get vaccinated and once again celebrate the 4th of July, holding cookouts and getting out of our homes to be together once more.

Remnants of New York City’s most horrific hour will likely remain behind in Afghanistan even as the final American troops leave the struggling nation after 20 years, according to reports. New York firefighters and police officers delivered debris from the World Trade Center at Bagram Air Base in December 2001, just days after the Taliban was toppled for harboring Sept. 11 terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden.A steel beam from the World Trade Center was erected at the base after being donated by residents of Breezy Point Queens in 2010. It has since become a base landmark, emblazoned with “WTC” stacked on top of “9 11 01.”

Former President Donald Trump will pay tribute to the victims of the Surfside building collapse at his rally in Sarasota, Florida, tonight and praise the leadership of Gov. Ron DeSantis.Trump arrives in his adopted home state after a turbulent week that saw his company charged with tax fraud and amid reports that he had fallen out with DeSantis, a rising star of the Republican Party and possible 2024 rival. But he is expected to open his speech by reflecting on the tragedy further south in Florida, where the death toll of 24 is expected to rise with 124 people still missing.
