Residents of Champlain Towers North, the sister tower of Champlain Towers South which partially collapsed, are concerned about their building’s structural integrity.
“There are people that have concerns about staying in that building given what’s happened. I can’t say I would be excited about staying in that building either,” said Surfside Mayor Gary Burkett.
“Champlain Towers North is basically the same building as Champlain Towers South. It was built about the same time, it was built by the same developer, it was probably built with the same plans, it was probably built with the same materials.

Good luck trying to sell the white elephant. I wouldn't live there.

I would have been the first one out of there! Take your Valuables and get out as fast as you can. The rest is just stuff!

I'm surprised that anyone still lives in any of those towers. Is anyone else reminded of John D. MacDonald's book "Condominium"? It was about the duct tape and baling wire construction of these condos..brought down by a hurricane. These didn't even require any kind of weather to bring them down. I think second story would be as high as I would want to go e.v..e.r.

I'm with the OP. I would have packed up the morning it happened - important stuff and the pets, and off I'd go. Everything else is replaceable. I'd consider moving back after a thorough inspection and retrofit, but more than likely not.

If they are concerned they should move out of that building. Some are probably waiting and playing the odds that either the State of Florida or the Federal Government will compensate them for their moves even though they, the residents of that condo building, actually own the building.

The management company and the HOA got reports about how bad things were getting and how much it would cost to fix them.
The homeowners outvoted spending the money.
So.....
If it scared you, you should have sold and moved out.
Or simply moved out.
Your neighbors (a majority of those who voted, anyway) simply couldn't bring themselves to part with the cash needed to repair this building complex.

I figured that building would have already been evacuated out of fear that the residents are sitting ducks.

Property values just went to about 250 bucks. There's probably a Nigerian prince somewhere who will come looking. Don't give up, get out.

These condos were built circa 1980-1981 during the era of the Colombian Cartels and the Cocaine Cowboys. Would not be surprised that a lot of drug money was laundered in the construction, including bribes all around to grease inspections.

I was thinking about the same things as #11. Drug money was moving around in literal brown grocery sacks of $100s. A college roommate was a professor at Univ. of Miami in those days, we visited and talked, crime was crazy, and that is what drove Florida to their 'shall issue' concealed carry law, which was the first of many dominoes moving us to more 2nd Amendment freedoms.
When there is a LOT of 'unaccounted for' cash sloshing around, you can bet that there is a good chance that at least some of it went into building condos to launder those funds. And the folks who brought in large quantities of illegally obtained cash aren't going be too worried about following the building codes. A deep dive into the funding and original owners of the condo might be interesting if there are any real journalists left.
Purely speculation at this point, of course, but the early 80s were wide open times, and it makes you wonder if any of the real estate moguls of the era were also actually part of the drug connections. Rumors abounded.
Look up the Whittington Brothers, racing cars, racing aircraft, and at the time (late 70s early 80s) that they made a big splash in racing, they were said to be "Miami real estate investors". Ultimately, two brothers went to prison for drug smuggling. The TV show Miami Vice wasn't much fiction. And Glenn Frey's Smuggler's Blues was the local anthem for many.
It makes you wonder when condos built in those days just fall down.

This is a nightmare for the neighbours whose buildings were built on sand and and limestone. What do they do now?

If the sister condo is still standing next year, be interesting to see what the realestate taxes will be.
