A Massachusetts town has created a fund to pay reparations to black residents as communities and institutions across the country look to atone for slavery, discrimination and past wrongs amid the nation's ongoing racial reckoning. The Amherst Town Council on Monday voted 12-1 in favor of establishing the fund and requiring a two-thirds vote of the council to authorize any spending from it, The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported.
The town, which is located some 90 miles from Boston and has a population of just under 38,000, has yet to decide how a person would become eligible for the reparation fund,

It's no more than right. After all, Taxachusetts was the slave market hub of the Antebellum South.

Amhest is the home town of The University of Massachusetts. And is also one of the most lilly white towns in a pretty lilly white state.

In Amherst there are 9,711 housing units and a Black Population of 5.4%. Sooo if 525 of the towns wealthiest white liberals just swap houses with the Black families? Deed is done, all "Repared", Right??

No slaves in Massachusetts and many fought against slavery.
This is just nonsensical.

"That program uses marijuana tax revenues to give eligible Black residents $25,000 housing grants for down payments, repairs or existing mortgages. Black residents are eligible for the housing program if they, or their ancestors, lived in the city between 1919 and 1969 or if they can show they suffered housing discrimination due to the city's policies."
These standards of eligibility do not require any proof of monetary damage to anyone based upon racial discrimination by the city.
Municipalities are authorized to expend tax revenues for only proper public purposes. There are valid questions whether these proposed expenditures are for any proper public purpose, and regarding illegal discrimination based on race.

My Irish ancestors were brought to America during the Potato Famine and held in complete servitude to their owners. Does that qualify me for reparations? My Christian ancestors were slaves to their Roman conquerors and suffered horrible treatment, including being fed to animals. Does that qualify me for reparations from Italy? My Hebrew ancestors were slaves held captive in Egypt. Does that qualify me for reparations from Egypt? Is there a deadline for reparations?

My Great-Great Grandfather left his farm in NW Ohio and spent more than two years at various battlefields fighting to free slaves. All I got was a T-shirt.

Massachusetts was a Union state that sent black and white soldiers to unite the country and end slavery. There was a movie about the 54th Mass. regiment. An all black regiment.

I don’t believe that Massachusetts was ever a slave State and that there were never Slaves in the town of Amherst. Watch the money on this one, especially if it turns out that a Nigerian Prince is selected to be a reparations fund recipient.

Quintessential virtue signaling by very self-righteous people.
That this gesture is typical of the chardonnay-drinking, brie cheese eating hoity-toities, who are close-minded and ignorant but think they are the most enlightened and brilliant human beings on earth.
SO-O-O tiresomely predictable.

I believe former slaves in 1865 were offered forty acres and a mule as reparations. Since a $200,000 fund was all MA could come up with for all the black people in MA... it seems like the original offer would be a better deal for reparations.

Now a mischievous white resident should sue dem on the basis that since he had nothing to do with slavery this is injurious to his emotional & mental health.
Therefore Amherst must either cancel this or pay him for the mental anguish they are forcing him to endure.
Why not?🤔

I doubt a lot of the town's blacks are laughing their asses off, because at this point, most truly believe they are entitled to that (and more). This will not buy the good will that is intended; the sense of entitlement will remain unsatisfied.

If I were a taxpayer in this lie-beral cesspool of a town, I would be gone tomorrow rather than see a penny of my tax dollars go to this useless fund!!!
Example #82,456,723 (this month alone) of just how mentally ill and evil lie-berals truly are!!!!

To be eligible, I suggest that a black person has to show that they are a recently released slave, and didn't get their 40 acres and a mule.

Must be a small town. Will they dole it out in $100 increments? Here's your reparations, go pay for gas for a couple of weeks. Leftists are stupid idiots.

Two of my ancestors were slave-holders in 1860. What I would like to apologize for is the fact that they had a hand in bringing them here lo these many years ago. Without the mass of imported slaves, this country would be a much richer and safer place. We would need only half the prisons, cops, judges, welfare, etc.
