Supreme Court unanimously rules in favor
of Catholic foster agency in case that pitted
religious freedom against LGBTQ rights

The US Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Thursday in favor of a Catholic child welfare organization, saying the charity has a right to decline to place foster children with same-sex couples. Catholic Social Services sued the City of Philadelphia after it informed private agencies that provided foster care services that it would not refer children to the agencies unless they agreed to nondiscrimination requirements. Catholic Social Services argued that it had the right to opt-out of the nondiscrimination requirement, citing the First Amendment. The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that Philadelphia cannot force the charity to certify same-sex couples as foster parents, saying the rule violated their First Amendment rights.

Perhaps the Supreme Court has gotten its feet back on the ground, has come to its senses, and no longer feels intimidated, at least for the time being.

Unanimous! I’m stunned that Sotomayor and Kagan sided against their own Rainbow crowd. It’s been a long time coming but I’m thrilled that the SCOTUS finally got something right. Foster children have enough issues without shoving them into same-sex households.

Typical Supreme Joke of the United States. Dodged the Smith decision and the opportunity to correct a clearly unconstitutional decision to tie a very minor victory to one, just one situation. Chief Just Us Roberts probably was able to get a unanimous decision that isn't really a decision to protect Smith. Pitfall!

The city of Evanston, Illinois, located just north of Chicago, joined communities across the U.S. in celebrating their first in-person Juneteenth parade Saturday, but some have been left wondering why celebrations for the nation’s Independence Day have been canceled. The Evanston Fourth of July Association voted to cancel the town’s Independence Day events earlier in 2020 and opt for a virtual celebration instead -- citing concerns over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. "Based on concern for public health due to the unpredictability of the pandemic’s impact, vaccination rates, and in cooperation with our local authorities, the Trustees…voted to cancel
CNN to Fried: How can you not credit DeSantis

Sometimes, you just have to take the L. Perhaps Nikki Fried didn’t expect CNN’s Poppy Harlow to insist on it. In an interview yesterday with the presumed Democratic frontrunner to take on Ron DeSantis, Fried refused to credit the governor for getting anything right about the COVID-19 pandemic response in Florida. When Fried began to criticize DeSantis on nursing home policy, however, New York-based Harlow snapped back that DeSantis was “one of the quickest governors to lock down the nursing homes — the opposite of what happened here in New York.” Fried never really recovered from that pushback
Abbott defunds the entire Texas state legislature 14 replies

Governor Abbott threatened to defund the Texas Legislature after Texas Democrats walked out of the legislative session rather than take a vote on election reform laws. When they broke quorum and shut down the session, Abbott said that if legislators weren’t going to do their jobs, they shouldn’t be paid. Friday Abbott made good on that threat. The elections bill was a top priority for the governor during this year’s session. Texas Democrats decided to cut and run, breaking quorum, instead of voting on Senate Bill 7. They knew that the Republicans had the votes to pass the legislation – both the Texas House and the Texas Senate hold Republican majorities.

And so it ends. On Friday, June 18, 2021 the Rush Limbaugh Show officially shut down the Golden EIB microphone. As it happened, it fell to my local Harrisburg radio host, WHP’s Ken Matthews, to be the last “guide” host that had shepherded the show since Rush departed to give back the talent he had on loan from God. The realization that Rush’s show - which had continued since his death with guide hosts and taped Rush playbacks on various topics - was now, in fact, irretrievably over and never to return was both poignant and a tad unnerving for his fans.

The Confederate battle flag, which was crafted as a symbol of opposition to the abolishment of slavery, is just recently tired. We don’t see it much anymore. However, on the 6th, when the stormers rained on the nation’s most precious hut, waving Old Glory — the memo was received: the American flag is its replacement. President Biden, Madame Harris and members of Congress: the American flag has been hijacked as code for a specific belief. God bless those believers, they can have it. Like the Confederate, it is tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect. It no longer represents democracy and freedom. It no longer represents ALL of us. It’s not fair

Good news, everyone. Freezing lethal aid to Ukraine in order to thwart Russia is now good again. All it took was Donald Trump leaving office. Weird, right? I know, politics often mimics parody, but this is a bit much. When was that aid frozen? You guessed it, right after Biden met with Vladamir Putin. Prior to that meeting, the Russian Defense Minister had said they would pull troops back that had been stationed near the Ukrainian border. That hasn’t actually happened, though, so why would Biden make this move after meeting with Putin? But despite Russia’s announcement, a top Ukrainian official said in May that about 100,000 Russian troops were still near

Ron DeSantis. In a 124-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Steven Merryday of the Middle District of Florida said the agency’s “conditional sail order” — a framework of regulations dictating how cruises can restart in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic — can remain in place for Florida cruises only until July 18, granting DeSantis’ request for a preliminary injunction while the full case moves forward. After July 18, the rules will turn into non-binding

OAKLAND — A 54-year-old man was arrested Thursday for allegedly assaulting Gov. Gavin Newsom in downtown Oakland, authorities said. Newsom was in town to promote support for small businesses. Before stopping at Beastmode Barbershop and Graffiti Pizza, the governor came across the 54-year-old while walking on Washington Street in Old Oakland. “This morning, the Governor was approached by an aggressive individual. Members of the Governor’s security detail removed the Governor from the situation and the individual was arrested by CHP officers,” the CHP, which provides security for the governor, said in a statement.

In January, standing on the steps of the Capitol, President Joe Biden warned of "an attack on democracy." In April, standing inside the House chamber, Biden declared that the only way to restore the country's soul was "to protect the sacred right to vote." And earlier this month, standing on what was once Black Wall Street where as many as 300 Black people were murdered in 1921 by a white mob in Tulsa, Okla., Biden said he'd "fight like heck" to "combat the new assault on the right to vote." But next week, when the Senate takes up Democrats’ signature elections bill designed to expand voting access, it will fail.

Particularly egregious — as always — CNN, who just couldn’t keep from bootlicking for Biden despite there being no facts to support the notion that he’d actually succeeded at anything. There was this tongue bath that CNN’s Jeff Zeleny was part of writing that we reported on earlier. Traveling across Europe for the past week, Biden found his reputation as a foreign policy wiseman preceded him — even at Windsor Castle, whose occupant has met her share of world leaders. Newsmax released an article this week that gives voice to further distrust of America’s once-premiere law enforcement agency. The column was based on a series of questions and concerns presented by Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) regarding the still murky details around the January 6th storming of the Capitol building. Two questions lobbed at the FBI are both haunting and disheartening: “What did the FBI know? And when did they know it?” The fact that the agency responsible for investigating the lawlessness of that date is itself under scrutiny is alarming.

The tweet emphasizes the freedoms listed in the Declaration of Independence — the same freedoms Americans fought for during the Civil War — rather than the political differences the country is currently grappling with.
