House and Senate Republicans introduced bills on Monday that would bar federal funds from being used to teach The New York Times’ “1619 Project.”
The measures are unlikely to pass the Democratic-run Congress, but the bills reflect mounting opposition to effort inform school curriculums with the newspaper series, which reframed U.S. history with a focus on slavery and racism as the defining characteristic of the American experience. “Activists in schools want to teach our kids to hate America and hate each other using discredited, Critical Race Theory curricula like the 1619 Project. Federal funds should not pay for activists to masquerade as teachers and indoctrinate our youth,”

President Biden on Monday wouldn’t repeat his assertion that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “killer,” calling him a “worthy adversary” as he prepares for a showdown with Mr. Putin in Geneva on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference at NATO headquarters in Belgium, the president said he will seek areas of cooperation with Mr. Putin, after Moscow’s interference in U.S. elections, cyberattacks originating in Russia and human-rights violations.(Snip) Asked if he still believes Mr. Putin is a “killer,” as he stated in March, Mr. Biden paused for an awkwardly long time before giving a forced laugh. He noted that Mr. Putin also laughed

Vice President Kamala Harris was met by protesters offering her directions to the southern border on Monday as she embarked on the first day of her nationwide COVID-19 vaccination tour in South Carolina. In Greenville, Ms. Harris’ motorcade drove past demonstrators holding signs that said “Border is That Way” and “Trump won.” En route to her second stop, the vice president passed protesters shouting “go to Texas” and holding signs that said, “Trump is still our Prez.” Ms. Harris, who is leading the administration’s effort to stop the surge of illegal migrants, said after a trip to Central America last week that she will visit

The Department of Homeland Security will speed up work permits for tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who claim they are victims of crime, the department announced Monday, saying the current wait, which can last up to five years, is too long to make people remain in economic limbo. More than 160,000 people were waiting for the victim visa, officially known as the U visa, as of December. Under the new rules, U visa applicants can be awarded work permits and deferred action, which is an official amnesty for deportation, once they have filed their petition, had their fingerprints taken and are deemed to have made

Joe Biden repeatedly confused Syria with Libya while discussing ways of working with Russia during a press conference at the G7 on Sunday.
The 78-year-old gaffe machine spoke of working with Vladimir Putin to provide economic assistance to the people of Libya, prompting some confused glances from the press pack at the G7 summit in Cornwall, England.
'I'm hopeful that we can find an accommodation where we can save the lives of people in—for example, in—in Libya,' the president said, mentioning the north African country for the third time instead of Syria, which is in the Middle East. The White House later brushed the confusion off,

The 59-second clip shot May 27, 2021, in a Pershing Middle School classroom has been posted to Facebook, Twitter and blogs. It also caught the attention of state Sen. Eric Burlison, who issued a statement Friday. The teacher is no longer working for the district.(Snip) It is unknown, based on the clip, what the teacher said when she presented the treats. Rockton, Ill.—Residents within a one mile radius of Chemtool, 1165 Prairie Hill Road, are being asked to evacuate due to possible dangerous chemicals being released in a large fire at the facility Monday morning. Approximately 70 employees were evacuated and were uninjured. Rockton Fire Chief Kirk Wilson said one firefighter was treated for injuries.(Snip) A massive dark plume of smoke extended south-southeast from the fire, raining ash and debris on residents as far south as DeKalb. Wilson said residents and businesses within a one mile radius of Chemtool were “strongly suggested” to evacuate as a precaution, due to potentially hazardous chemicals stored at the facility.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continued to try to pick apart U.S. claims on a media tour in advance of his summit with President Biden–denying in an interview airing Monday that Russia engaged in cyber attacks and saying there was no proof it interfered in U.S. elections. 'Where is the evidence? Where is proof? It's becoming farcical,' Putin said in a sit-down interview with NBC News from Moscow. 'We have been accused of all kinds of things—election interference, cyberattacks and so on and so forth—and not once, not once, not one time, did they bother to produce any kind of evidence or proof, just unfounded accusations.'

A Homeland Security-backed study has found that it’s unlikely Central American countries can boost their economies enough to stop people from trying to migrate to the U.S., undercutting President Biden’s plans to rely on nation-building to curb the border surge. Incomes rise tenfold—an incomparable lure—for migrants from the key Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador by working in the U.S., according to the Borders, Trade and Immigration Institute. “The potential economic gain following migration from the Northern Triangle to the U.S. is enormous,” the institute concluded. “In the presence of a wage gap this large, even significant percentage changes

A lawsuit opposing the Houston Methodist Hospital network’s mandate that employees must get the COVID-19 vaccine has been shot down at the federal level. A U.S. District judge on Saturday tossed the lawsuit from employees of the Texas hospital system who argue they shouldn’t be required to get vaccinated. The dismissal comes after 178 staffers who declined to get the vaccine were suspended by Houston Methodist, which had instituted a June 7 deadline for employees to receive the shots. A claim made by the lawsuit’s lead plaintiff, Jennifer Bridges, describing the vaccines as “experimental and dangerous” was refuted by the judge.

Alexis Mirra has been learning how to sew the past few weeks, and even bought a thimble. It’s not a hobby, it’s a necessity to affix new patches on the uniforms of fellow police officers in Hopewell Township. The patches feature the colors from the Pride flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ community, and officers are voluntarily wearing them for the remainder of June, for Pride Month. The patches were Mirra’s idea and now project, and the detective believes a first in the Garden State.(Snip) About half the department is wearing the patches, which goes beyond their personal choice. “It shows support for the LGBTQ community
