Ohio physicians, hospitals and health insurance companies could refuse to provide or pay for a medical service if it violates their moral beliefs, under language inserted into the state budget bill this week.
The new language would also give medical practitioners immunity from lawsuits for refusing such and allow them to sue others.
Abortion rights and LGBTQ advocates sounded the alarm this week, fearing more restricted access to reproductive health care and more discrimination. Those on the other side hailed the measure as essential for protecting religious freedoms.

Named after journalist Michael Kinsley who introduced the concept, a “Kinsley gaffe” occurs when a speaker “accidentally reveals something truthful about what is going on in his or her head.” Last week, the New York Times Editorial Board Member Mara Gay made the season’s most notable Kinsley gaffe in her account on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” of a harrowing trip to New York City’s eastern suburbs on Long Island.
[SNIP] After Gay had finished recounting how she found “just disturbing” the sight of “dozens of American flags,” co-host Mika Brzezinski chimed in, “Totally agree.”

A school board member called on graduating high school students to remember 'jihad' at their commencement as she warned they were entering a world of, 'racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, [and] white supremacy.'
Abrar Omeish, the sole Muslim member on the Fairfax County School Board, in Virginia, addressed the graduating students of Justice High School on June 7.
In English, she told them that: 'The world sees the accolade, the diploma, the fruit of all your years yet be reminded of the detail of your struggle.'
But when she repeated the speech in Arabic, she told students to remember their 'jihad' - meaning holy war.

Former President Donald Trump delivered a strong message against China on Saturday, blaming the country for the coronavirus pandemic.
The former president spoke about China in a speech to North Carolina Republicans, demanding that China pay “reparations” to the world for the devastation caused by the pandemic.
“We should all declare with one unified voice that China must pay. They must pay,” Trump said as the crowd cheered and applauded.
He proposed that all nations should join the United States in demanding that China pay for the effect of the virus.
“All nations should work together to present China a bill for a minimum of $10 trillion to compensate for the damage,” he said.

The Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) plans to appeal a judge’s reinstatement of a high school gym coach who refused to address trans students by their preferred pronouns.
The Virginia school district put gym teacher Byron “Tanner” Cross on leave after he cited his Christian faith in opposition to the proposed Policy 8040, which would require educators to address trans students by the pronouns they prefer.
On Tuesday, the Twentieth Judicial Circuit of Virginia ordered Loudoun County to reinstate Cross, ruling that “his suspension was an act of retaliation following his exercise of his rights to free speech."

House lawmakers proposed a raft of bipartisan legislation aimed at reining in the country’s biggest tech companies, including a bill that seeks to make Amazon.com and other large corporations effectively split in two or shed their private-label products.
The bills, announced Friday, amount to the biggest congressional broadside yet on a handful of technology companies—including Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc. as well as Amazon -- whose size and power have drawn growing scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators in the U.S. and Europe.

Republican lawmakers and officials from at least seven states have toured or plan to tour the site of the ongoing partisan ballot review in Arizona as former President Donald Trump continues to spread the lie that his loss was the result of fraud. The Republicans who have made the trip are among the most pro-Trump in their states, and the visits come as far-right media personalities and lawmakers have joined in the former president's call to expand such reviews to locales outside of Maricopa County.
