Fitchburg  – A Fitchburg High School graduate is heading to Harvard University, but before she starts her college career, she’s helping others do the same. Verda Tetteh is getting a full ride to Harvard. At graduation, she was awarded an additional $40,000 scholarship for books, computers and living expenses but she turned it down. (Snip) suggested the money go to a struggling fellow student or students, for whom it might open a door to community college. “I’m excited to see who it helps and how that changes their life, so I am so happy that God gave me the strength to do that,”

Her mother is an immigrant from Ghana. Worked tirelessly so her daughter could get a stellar education. So many native born to this country could learn a lot from this mom. This is an amazing young lady.

If her parents used a 529 to save for college, and then she got a full scholarship, then taking the money would not have been needed. Plus she would have had to prove the 40 grand was used for school, and not for clothes, a car, or spring break. We saved for my son's education using a 529 college savings plan, and he graduated debt free. He didn't go to a 60 grand plus a year college, but his college still cost over 50 grand for four years.

Wow! a whopping $40k for books, computers, and living expenses. For real? Good grief! they are not even wealthy. That young lady was raised right. I hope Harvard doesn't destroy her parents' hard work. Harvard will probably donate the money to one of xiden's spawns.

There was a time, generally during the sixties, where the affluent wold turn down scholarships so the the money could be used for the genuinely needy. That time has passed, save for the bright spots like this.

Great gesture and a selfless young lady, but this was a scholarship for general excellence, not financial need. No more and no fewer students would attend Harvard (with its $40 billion endowment) whether she gave this up or not.

Chicago (WLS) -- For Chicago police officers, the return to normal schedules will be short-lived. The ABC7 I-Team has learned that police citywide will be back on 12-hour shifts and have their regular days off cancelled next weekend. The order, revealed in a CPD memo obtained Thursday by the I-Team, reverses an announcement made just 10 days ago by Supt. David Brown. (Snip) Despite Supt. Brown's admission that such scheduling is "not sustainable," officers say they are concerned that next weekend's everyday scheduling will continue through the summer, rolling from Juneteenth to the 4th of July to Lollapalooza and beyond.
