After 40 years of AIDS, here’s why
we still don’t have an HIV vaccine

Forty years ago, researchers described the mysterious cases of five gay men who had fallen ill with a pneumonia caused by the bacteria Pneumocystis carinii. Two of the five men had already died. That type of pneumonia usually affects only individuals who are severely immunocompromised, researchers wrote in the June 5, 1981 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Scientists would soon discover that a disease that would come to be known as AIDS was devastating the men’s immune systems. Three years later, scientists pinned the blame for AIDS on a virus dubbed HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus. Margaret Heckler, the then

Comments:

There were mostly likely cases of AIDS well before 40 years ago. In the late 1960s a young man died of mysterious symptoms that closely paralleled AIDS. Virus usually take a long time to spread - COVID-19 being a glaring exception.

HIV is not an easy virus to acquire - most victims are infected through anal sex, IV drug use, or "dry sex" in Africa. Stop engaging in any of these practices (or use a condom for sex) and your likelihood of catching it is significantly diminished. I would argue that we shouldn't expend much money or effort on developing a vaccine for a disease so easily prevented by much, much cheaper means.

During this covid pandemic the medical establishment had no trouble issuing imperial edicts prohibiting everyone from normal daily activities such as going to work, school, church, restaurants, etc. in order to stop the spread of a disease. During the AIDS crisis, not once did we witness the medical establishment even suggest to homosexuals that they should perhaps refrain from promiscuous anal sex or drug addicts stop injecting illegal drugs to stop the spread of that disease. A vaccine for AIDS is not necessary, it is 100 percent preventable.

#2 is correct. I remember when HIV first broke out and it was almost immediately politicized with the media pushing the idea that heterosexuals were just as likely to get it as the gay community. That was an outright lie and they knew it. If the media and the gay lobby had allowed proper procedures (quarantine, isolation, etc) then millions of lives could have been saved.

I'm waiting for the medical community will find a cure for cancer in children. As a 8 years old in 1952, my friends and I would put on " plays" several times a month for our parents and younger siblings and charge 7 cents admission and 5 cents for a Coke. Then we would ride our bikes several towns away ( yes, we rode several miles without our parents) and gave the money to the nearest radio station to give to Children's Hospital in Boston for The Jimmy Fund. Polio was at this time, so at least they were successful with that vaccine,. But now I see on our NH news station ads for "I'm Jimmy", for the Jimmy Fund in Boston , 70 YEARS later for the same diseases, etc. Where has all this money, time and research gone to? Are there any cancers that have been cured? Vaccines developed? I'm waiting!!

In the middle 80s, when AIDs was a very new thing, only a few good scientific reports were out on it, and during a skiing vacation with friends, one of them a cellular research biologist, we had several long discussions on the topic. I brought hard copies of a couple of scientific articles on it, and we had several engineers, PhD scientists, etc....all good thinkers, a bit concerned about this new virus. The cellular research professor opined 'they'll probably never get a vaccine for this one, the protein coat seems to be too variable'. And he has proven to be correct now that we are 35 years down the pike. The other thing we concluded was that "it's great that this virus comes with an intelligence test attached, if you are smart, you won't get it". Yep, unless you insist on huge amounts of random homosexual sex, or IV illegal drug use, you won't get it. And it has proven to be almost exclusively a homosexual disease.

The spread of AIDS was sourced to a gay flight attendant from Montreal who picked it up in Africa and also made frequent trips to the bath houses in San Francisco. He obviously did not care where he put his penis as long as it was somewhere but in his pants. If memory serves, this first was revealed in 1982. The fact that gay men have any malfunctions whatsoever is politically incorrect slander and should never be mentioned so I did not say it.

In January 1989 I had to have blood prior to a major surgery. I had to sign a release saying I wouldn't hold anyone responsible if I got HIV from the blood, knowing gay men were donating blood for the blood bank. I remember watching that blood go into my arm, wondering if I was watching the start of my death sentence. Was it ever confirmed that this came from monkeys in Africa? Too long ago for me to remember. Dr, Fraud was involved with this too when he was barely out of medical school. I saw a video on the Vice channel one evening.

I read "And the Band Played On," which covered the early history of the AIDS epidemic. I've never forgotten the sections on the San Francisco public health officials talking about their fears about the activities in the gay bathhouses. They knew it was just a matter of time before some pathogen wreaked havoc on the customers.

Yes, I recall when all this "AIDS crisis" began and was initially panned by the national media because it was a disease limited to hedonistic homosexuals. At that time, homosexuality was NOT considered normal, NOT acceptable, and was NOT discussed in the town squares of America. Then came the young hemophiliac boy, Ryan White, who gotten AIDS from tainted blood donated by a homosexual. That young man because the poster boy for the, "See! AIDS isn't about homosexuals!" movement, even though the transmission initiation was indeed homosexual. From that moment on AIDS became "our national cause" to find a cure. Cases disappeared from the news, as treatments began to take abate the associated death sentence. Sort of like having leprosy these days. https://time.com/3763875/ryan-white-history/

RE#7's experience, avoiding blood transfusions was a good idea for quite a while. In 1999 was in an accident, needed orthopedic surgery. Prior to surgery, a doc, not my surgeon, came into my room with a clipboard of papers to sign. One was a release of liability for blood transfusion. I said, "If I need blood, my wife is O positive and I'll only take blood from her." The doc was put out, and said, "NO, our hospital does not permit family blood donors. You have to take blood from our blood supply." I said, "I won't sign the release." He said, "You can't do that!", and I reiterated my stand and he left, pretty unhappy. About 15 minutes later my very sensible orthopedic doc, who was doing the surgery came in, and we discussed the AIDs in the blood supply issue, and I asked why my 'universal donor' wife's blood couldn't be used....he said,"It's just hospital policy, I can't go against it." He said that if he took some extra efforts he probably could get by with no blood transfusion, but it might take me a day or two longer to rebuild to full blood level. He agreed to avoid blood transfusion if it was at all possible, and said that it would be highly unlikely that I'd need it. I signed, the surgery went well and I didn't get any potentially AIDs tainted blood. BP ran a touch lower than standard for a day, and that was it. Bottom line, don't let them push you around just because they are docs.

The lives lost due to our government's response to AIDS can't be counted. When it became clear the best way to get research funded was to connect it to finding the cure for AIDS, researchers pulled off their cancer, heart disease and diabetes work and shifted to AIDS. People who developed diseases through no fault, or little fault of their own were sacrificed in order to concentrate on saving people from a disease that could be avoided by practicing some level of self control once the blood supply was purged of tainted units. My daughter was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes as a child. We are thankful for improved care methods and technology that has allowed her to thrive for the past 24 years, but I can't help but wonder if we would have a cure by now had AIDS not been a drain on medical research funding.

The attorneys general of 22 states on Friday urged the U.S. Supreme Court not to end the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's pandemic-related residential eviction moratorium that has been challenged by landlord groups. The landlords asked the Supreme Court last week to issue an order stopping the national ban on evictions, which was first implemented last September and is due to expire on June 30. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky declined to say this week if the agency will again extend the moratorium, saying discussions are ongoing.
