The United States' top general has called on the White House to evacuate all 18,000 interpreters who helped US troops in Afghanistan over fears the Taliban will murder them. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says a plan has been drawn up to rapidly fly all 18,000 interpreters to safety—but the White House has pushed back against his call to use it. Speaking at a US Air force Academy commencement ceremony on Wednesday, Milley said: 'There are plans being developed very, very rapidly here for not just interpreters, but a lot of other people that have worked with the United States.

Why are plans just now being developed. We were there for 20 yrs. maybe the illegal aliens coming if from the Mexican border are more important than American caring people who have helped us and would be productive people here not a drain on the tax payers.

Taking care of these Afghan translators should not depend on whether getting into Afghanistan was a wise move in the first place. These translators bravely allied with us to help their nation fight the Taliban insurgency. They gave their loyalty to us and we should be loyal to them. While one could argue credibly that we have failed to solve the insurgency in the country it is indisputable that among the first casualties of a Taliban victory will be the annihilation of their enemies. Those enemies include everyone who served in the Afghan army, the police, the government and all the females who went to school. With the hundreds of thousands of illegals now crossing our borders into the US the least we can do is take care of those who have served us so well. Perhaps we should pay them to fly to Mexico and then provide them with funds to pay the cartels to sneak them into the US. That might just be a tad more efficient than waiting for the State Department to issue humanitarian visas.

Mixed feelings. Yes, they helped us. But they are 7th century barbarians and regardless of what else may be true, they will remain Muslims and THAT ALONE will do harm to our country.
I suggest we assist them in moving to other Muslim countries, NOT THE USA.

Foolish USA aimed to liberate Afghanistan from the Taliban, to the direct benefit of Afghanistan (translators included) while delivering little if any benefit to the USA. The translators were helping their own country, not the USA, so now we have to import the translators (who probably have divided allegiances) and their entire families into the USA, at huge cost to the US taxpayers. Is that about right?

Is it ever wise to have a policy of broadbrushing any group of immigrants, bypassing Immigration Law? There may be some among them who legally qualify to become American citizens but there may be those who do not. Each person's case needs to be investigated.

I remember George's big adventure in Afghanistan as something everyone, I mean everyone wanted post-911. We needed to get in there ASAP and get Bin Laden no matter what. OMG, something must be done! Remember? Of course this meant that Shinseki's depleted Army needed time to refit and get up to readiness standards. So, in go the SF and if it hadn't been a successful effort to quickly equip the Northern Alliance (thanks to Putin), that would have failed too. My words to Milley would be: Tell your predecessors to win the war next time, and maybe we wouldn't have to ship any people back to the States. And maybe we wouldn't have spend 18 years worth of blood and treasure.

Is no one but us fighting this Taliban resurgence? I mean gosh, 18,000 translators. That would make a pretty big army right there to fight for their own country.

It seems like every time in the modern era when the USA military goes into a foreign country to save the people there, in the end the USA military retreats out of the country, and brings a lot of the indigenous people from that country as refugees to the USA. The leaders of those indigenous people by now know what will happen in the end, and if they hang in there long enough they will get a free ride to the USA for themselves and their extended family members. Instead of the USA picking up the massive cost to resettle tens of thousands of Afghans in the USA, it would be much more cost effective and culturally appropriate to resettle those people in some Islamic country that would accept them.

More fallout from Compassionate George's Big Adventure as a "wartime president." "Evacuate" means relocating them and their extended families to the USA, which is broke, bursting at the seams, and already has more than enough Diversity, thank you very much General Miley. How about relocating them to another Middle Eastern nation where they'd fit in better, with no risk to Legacy Americans?
