Matt Yglesias: The media really did screw
up the lab leak story

Original Article

Yesterday Jonathan Chait wrote a pretty good summary of how the media messed up the lab leak story early last year. The Washington Post’s fact-checker also published a timeline which attempted to tell the same story. Chait’s piece was good and the Post’s timeline was less so, mostly because it minimized how the Post itself helped launch the crusade against the idea. In any case, today Matt Yglesias wrote his own summary of the media history of this story which I think is the best one I’ve seen so far. Yglesias says it appears it all started with these comments from Sen. Cotton.

I saw what I thought was pretty convincing evidence that Wuhan Institute of Virology was the real source of this in late February of 2020. The damned CDC, WHO and Dr. Fraud have been covering this up with the corrupt assistance of the Enemedia for nearly a year and a half.

IT WASN'T A LEAK! It was an intentional biowarfare release.

The left media has moved on from merely reporting the news, to being the news. Their love of the democrat party has dragged them down into the dumps.

My thinking was that the Kung flu pandemic was the plan B in case impeachment didn’t work as it was mighty coincidental that it appeared right on the heels of President Trump's acquittal in the senate.

They found out a way to blame it on Republicans, so now it's OK to tell the truth, I guess. It's all Sen. Cotton's fault for saying the truth too early and in a way that helped Trump. The meanstream media reflexively jumped to counter any such narrative.

Did they screw up? I say no, they did their job fulfilling their unyielding support to the overthrow of the republic by the communist left. A SARS COVID virus breaks out in the very city where gain of function weaponization research is being done on SARS COVID viruses and we are supposed to play Yankee Doodle on the air horns like good little trained seals. Remember when they told us that the only American who couldn't contain his parotitic rush of emotions after our President was assassinated was a terminally ill mob connected strip club owner? We have got to stop making it so easy to gaslight. And now I'll move on to the next absurdity. It's just by coincidence that we ourselves were playing footsie with that very same lab? This just happens to beam down from the starship to save the day as a second Trump term appeared all but certain? Then add the behavior that mimics a three year old holding his hands behind his back after touching the wet paint. Don't you dare speak of the lab "conspiracy" theory or suggest the emperor might be just a bit shy of his full compliment of royal robes. It takes the acceptance of a mosaic of absurdities to reject the common sense conclusion that this was deliberate and "we" were in on it.

I don't know if it was an intentional release or created as a bioweapon or if the dims were involved but it has been well demonstrated by several scientists that the wuhan virus could not spontaneously appear, there are too many mutations that had to occur on the coronavirus to become the wuhan virus. Five mutations do not happen at the same time, it was an insertion.

I agree with poster #2... china did this release of the china virus on purpose...it is an act of bio/warfare against the world to increase china's place in the market...when President Trump closed down travel from china... the Chinese commie party officials sent the virus to Europe..in hopes they would bring it to America... BUT... President Trump stopped that by closing travel from Europe also...and working his team into producing a vaccine...WE the people owe President Trump for being on the cutting edge .. thanks be to God...

The media wants us to feel insecure, because such insecurity prompts us to listen to them. EVERYTHING the media does is done to convince us that we need the media. This nation became great without TV, radio or internet. We attended a church. We talked to each other. We knew that telling lies was wrong.

And Trump almost spoiled everything by accidentally stumbling on one of the best preventative measures, HCQ. That had to be squashed to prevent the pandemic from fizzling out and not killing millions as planned. I recommend investing in hemp futures, because we're gonna need lots of rope to settle this score!

In spite of democrat/Deep State collusion with the Chinese Communist Party to develop and spread a killer virus, the democrats still had to resort to massive election fraud to unseat President Trump. And the democrat media is still harping about Jan 6 as being an attack on democracy. Going back as far as I can remember, the democrats always accuse the other end of the political spectrum, the non communist side, of doing what they are doing or have done. The scope of this democrat collusion is so large, it's hard for Normal Americans to even comprehend, much less punish. The leftist media could not pedal any faster in deflecting truth, which is one reason they instigate rioting and arson from their fellow travelers of ANTIFA and BLM.

Republicans in the Senate held together to thwart attempts to form a commission to investigate the trespassing and minor property damage that happened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. We should all refuse to call it an insurrection or even a riot at this point if for no other reason than to frustrate the left—in particular, leading Democrats like this bitter former presidential candidate who keeps lying to her followers: It is well established that the only person who died that day due to violence at the Capitol was Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed veteran and Trump supporter.

Definitive proof, if found, that a laboratory accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) may have caused the Chinese coronavirus pandemic has the potential to break the nearly impenetrable shield of sovereign immunity protecting China from lawsuits by American victims of the virus. American law protects foreign state powers from litigation on behalf of private persons through the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA). Mainstream diplomatic thought holds that sovereign immunity is a desirable policy to limit the power that individual citizens have to meddle in foreign policy, concentrating diplomatic powers in the state. The conventional wisdom holds

OK, that headline is clickbait, and we all know it is far too early to predict next fall’s elections with any confidence. Still, there are lots of positive indications. To begin with, there are multiple reports that while the Democrats feel comfortable with their position on the economy, with continuing rebound from the covid shutdowns assured and with some polls showing the public on board with the Biden administration’s money-printing scheme, they are deeply concerned about the unpopularity of their BLM/Antifa/CRT/anti-law enforcement agenda. As the pandemic sunsets on the United States, the nation stands far weaker, rocked by a public health emergency driving up debt and division amid a polarizing presidential election while political elites capitalized on the virus for ulterior ends. Legacy media got more irresponsible, big tech got more unfair, and half the population comfortably shut down their neighbors’ livelihoods in seeking an impossible life with zero risk, as if the virus had the potential to wipe out the human race.
