The number of U.S. military assets that may need to be renamed as part of an effort to scrub Confederate names could reach into the hundreds, the retired admiral leading the renaming effort said Friday. “I think once we get down to looking at buildings and street names, this potentially could run into the hundreds,” retired Adm. Michelle Howard told reporters on a conference call. (Snip) But the legislation requires renaming any “base, installation, street, building, facility, aircraft, ship, plane, weapon, equipment or any other property owned or controlled by the Department of Defense.” In her update on the commission's

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who has served since 1975 and is in the line of presidential succession, is asking colleagues to support his potential campaign for a ninth term, according to Democratic senators who have spoken to him. The 81-year-old has also indicated to them that he believes he’s “the only Democrat that can win the seat,” said a person briefed on the conversations. Given that Bernie Sanders is an independent who caucuses with Democrats, Leahy’s the only Democrat ever elected to the Senate from Vermont. If reelected, Leahy could take the record for Senate longevity in a chamber famous

Employers say they’re having difficulty filling jobs. Jobless Americans say they want to work. So what’s going on? (Snip) But a recent survey of 1,000 unemployed workers by CNBC and Morning Consult told a different story. Respondents said the trickle-down effect of job openings had not reached them — at least, not yet. Some 87% said they had not received job offers in the last six months. What’s more, 65% of those surveyed said unemployment benefits were not a factor in their rejecting a job. Instead, they cited too-low salary (36%), concerns about COVID-19 (35%) and the need to care

New York Attorney General Letitia James introduced a measure Friday that would tighten the rules governing the use of force by law enforcement. It would lower what her office calls the “exceedingly high standard for prosecuting police officers” who wrongly take excessive or lethal actions. The centerpiece of the legislation would change the use-of-force law “from one of simple necessity to one of absolute last resort, mandating that police officers only use force after all other alternatives have been exhausted,” James’ office said in a press release. James at a press conference Friday afternoon invoked the memories of George Floyd

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is taking over the prosecutor of Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright during a traffic stop last month. Potter has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in Wright's April 11 death. The case was previously being handled by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office, which asked Ellison to take it on instead, CBS Minnesota reported. "I did not seek this prosecution and do not accept it lightly," Ellison told CBS Minnesota. "I have had, and continue to have, confidence in how both County Attorney Orput and County Attorney Freeman have

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Coaches with Capital City Youth Bandits say they went in protector mode when they heard at least 20 gunshots during the team’s baseball practice in St. Paul on May 10. "We were pushing kids to the ground and had coaches laying on top of the kids," said Coach Tedric London, co-founder of the team. "I was kind of shook up a bit and I know the kid was for sure." It’s frustrating for the coaches, who say they no longer feel comfortable playing in the fields near Stinson Street. "It feels like it's a continuous thing,"

Nearly 1,000 Apple employees have signed an internal letter to CEO Tim Cook urging the company to issue a public statement in support of the Palestinian people, The Verge reported Thursday. "We are frustrated and disappointed because once more, many of those in positions of power and influence - who boldly stand for human rights in so many other just causes - either choose to remain silent or release ineffectually neutral 'both sides' statements with regards to the Palestinian situation," wrote the letter's authors, who are members of the Apple Muslim Association, according to The Verge. London - The International Energy Agency, which was founded by rich industrial nations after oil shocks in the 1970s to promote secure and affordable energy supplies, says the world needs to stop drilling for oil and gas right now to prevent a climate catastrophe. WASHINGTON -- U.S. home construction fell a surprisingly sharp 9.5% in April and economists attributed that partially to builders who delayed projects because of a surge in lumber prices and other supply constraints. The April decline left construction at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.57 million units, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That was down from a rate of 1.73 million units in March, which had been the best showing since homes were constructed at a rate of 1.74 million units in July 2006 at the peak of that decade's housing boom. Applications for building permits, considered a sign of

LONDON — DarkSide, the hacker group behind the recent Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, received a total of $90 million in bitcoin ransom payments before shutting down last week, according to new research. Colonial Pipeline was hit with a devastating cyberattack earlier this month that forced the company to shut down approximately 5,500 miles of pipeline in the United States, crippling gas delivery systems in Southeastern states. The FBI blamed the attack on DarkSide, a cybercriminal gang believed to be based in Eastern Europe, and Colonial reportedly paid a $5 million ransom to the group. DarkSide operates what’s known as a

Representative Cori Bush's Nigerian faith healer claims he cured her of COVID-19 - simply by the power of prayer over the phone. Charles Ndifon, a Rhode Island-based pastor whose Kingdom Embassy International church claims to be able to cure AIDS and resurrect people from the dead, has long acted as Bush's spiritual guide. Bush, a 44-year-old representative for Missouri, is a local chapter founder member and pastor at the controversial church. On Monday, Ndifon made the bizarre, unfounded claim that he could magically cure worshippers of COVID-19 in just 30 minutes. The 'healer', who believes that illnesses are caused by demons
