Baltimore—The Yankees’ COVID outbreak spread to a ninth member of their organization. Aaron Boone said Sunday they got news a “staff member” tested positive, which they learned Saturday night. According to Boone, the new positive is not part of the on-field coaching staff and the team didn’t name the person, as it did with pitching coach Matt Blake, first base coach Reggie Willits and third base coach Phil Nevin.(Snip) The staff member that tested positive Saturday is quarantining in Baltimore and, like the previous eight, is fully vaccinated. The other positive cases remain in quarantine in Tampa.

Police in Northern California have arrested three social activists on charges that they vandalized the former home of a police expert witness after he testified on behalf of fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin during his murder trial in the death of George Floyd. The arrests Tuesday in Santa Rosa were in connection with the targeting in mid-April of the onetime residence of defense use-of-force witness and retired police officer Barry Brodd. Pig's blood was smeared on the house in Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco, and a pig's head was left there. Police were quick to conclude that the thousands of dollars

Eric Clapton has hit out at 'propaganda' over vaccine safety, claiming he suffered alarming side effects after his Covid jabs. The legendary guitarist, a lockdown sceptic, said his hands and feet became 'useless'–prompting fears he would never play again. In a message to his music producer, he said: 'I took the first jab of AZ [AstraZeneca] and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days.' The 76-year-old said he 'recovered eventually' but suffered further 'disastrous reactions' six weeks later after the second shot. He added: 'My hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks,

In a twist worthy of Mark Twain himself, a St. John’s University professor has been fired for reading a passage containing the N-word from Twain’s anti-slavery novel “Pudd’nhead Wilson” in her “Literature of Satire” class.
Hannah Berliner Fischthal, an adjunct instructor at the Catholic college in Queens for 20 years, uttered the N-word once during a remote class Feb. 10—after she first explained to students the context of the word and said she hoped it would not offend anyone.(Snip) The day after the class, however, she got an email from a student who said she had to “abruptly” leave

A teen attacker with a 12-inch kitchen knife turned a Manhattan straphanger’s morning commute into a ride from hell. The still-shaken survivor of the early Friday stabbing spree aboard a downtown No. 4 train detailed the gory fight for his life, recounting how one of the assailant’s partners-in-crime urged the knife-wielding suspect to “keep doing it” as the blood started to spill. "I started defending myself,” said the 44-year-old man, who asked for anonymity Saturday as he spoke to a Daily News reporter from his Manhattan home. “I tried to avoid being stabbed… I was going to work.

Three years after a deranged nanny savagely stabbed three babies in a Queens “birthing center,” the assailant will not face trial—and the unregulated, makeshift maternity wards for foreign women have only multiplied in New York City. Some immigration experts call the “birth tourism” industry that supports these baby businesses a national security threat, as they aggressively promote themselves overseas as places for mothers to give birth to instant American citizens. Yu Fen Wang was working as a nanny at the Meibao Birthing Care Center in Flushing on Sept. 21, 2018 when she attacked three newborns, along with two adults, while screaming

The constant protest is taking its toll on the Rose City. Residents in the metro area surrounding Portland, Oregon, say the city’s downtown is dirty, unsafe and uninviting, and they don’t expect to visit as often, a poll commissioned by The Oregonian found. Residents described the city’s core as “destroyed,” “trashed,” and “sad,” and frequently referred to “riots” in discussing the city’s economic and cultural hub.(Snip) Another big problem is homelessness. As workers stayed home to stem the spread of the coronavirus, there was a sharp increase downtown in the number of people camping on the streets, particularly in Old Town Chinatown,

Rep. Cori Bush, Missouri Democrat, honored in a House floor speech a deceased Palestinian-American activist known for heckling police as “pigs” and telling them he prayed for their deaths during the 2014 Ferguson protests. Ms. Bush spoke “in memory of our brother” Bassem Masri, who died in November 2018 at age 31, praising him as “a Ferguson activist who was with us on the front lines of our uprising for justice following the police murder of Michael Brown Jr.” “So today we remember Bassem,” she said in her Thursday speech. “We remember his resistance in the face of militarized police occupation,

A group of gay police officers is barred from marching in next year’s annual Pride parade, the police organization’s leaders said Friday. New York City Pride has told the NYPD’s Gay Officers Action League that it is not welcome in the parade, said Det. Brian Downey, president of the police group.
NYC Pride had been expected to announce the Gay Officers Action League’s exclusion from the parade early next week. But GOAL preempted that announcement by issuing a news release on Friday night—and it referred to parts of the NYC Pride statement on its exclusion that have not been released yet.

Bentonville, Ark.—Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, said Friday that it won’t require vaccinated shoppers or workers to wear a mask in its U.S. stores unless state or local laws say otherwise. Vaccinated shoppers can go maskless immediately, the company said. Vaccinated workers can stop wearing them on Tuesday. As an incentive, Walmart said it is offering workers $75 if they prove they’ve been vaccinated. Customers won’t be asked but rather held to an “honor system” regarding their vaccination status, Walmart said. Workers, however, will need to answer “yes” to a vaccination question in a daily health assessment in order to go maskless,

A statue of Jesus was smashed and an American flag burned outside a Catholic church in Brooklyn—in what cops are calling a possible hate crime. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday when an unknown person hopped the fence at St. Athanasius Church on Bay Parkway at 61st Street in Bensonhurst, police said. The vandal pushed over a statue of Jesus’s crucifixion, breaking it into pieces, and torched an American flag hanging outside the rectory, according to cops.(Snip) The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is looking into the incident. “This was truly an act of hatred, and today is the saddest day

Trader Joe’s said it will allow fully vaccinated persons to go maskless in stores, while places like Home Depot, Target and Starbucks say customers should still cover up for now. CVS and Walgreens, top pharmacies that offer the COVID-19 vaccine, haven’t changed their mask policies but they’re taking a second look and said they will be guided by the safety of their workers and customers. “As a destination for COVID vaccine and testing we have decided to keep our current face-covering policy in place for the time being,” said Walgreens spokesman Fraser Engerman.(Snip) Some things changed overnight, with President Biden roaming
