Hackers threatened to release 250 gigabytes of confidential Metropolitan Police Department files unless Washington, D.C., officials pay a $4 million ransom, the DCist reported Tuesday. The Russian-speaking hackers are part of a group known as Babuk, which allegedly posted 20 Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers’ personnel files after stealing 250 gigabytes of internal data, the DCist reported. Babuk said negotiations with officials “reached a dead end” and reportedly posted chat logs where officials offered $100,000 to the group.“The amount we were offered does not suit us… if during tomorrow they do not raise the price, we will release all the data,” Babuk posted on its website, according to the DCist.

Other than the Social Security numbers I can't see where this is going to have much effect on the officers since I doubt if the (non-Congressional) criminals in Washington really care much about personal information, nor would the average citizen. LifeLock should step up and give the officers free subscriptions. Good publicity for them.

Release it. Let the chips fall where they may. Do not pay ransom. Once this becomes a viable way to extort money - it will be how we are governed.

The Israel Defence Forces managed to trick Hamas into believing a ground invasion was underway last night and then obliterated their tunnel network knowing militants would be hiding underground waiting to ambush tanks and soldiers, reports in Israel claim. There was confusion when the IDF said shortly after midnight that ground forces were 'attacking in Gaza', and later suggested that boots were on the ground. A spokesman later retracted that statement - saying that military operations were conducted along the border, but no Israeli troops had crossed it. However, the announcement was apparently a well-planned ploy to get Hamas to send its fighters into its underground tunnel system

House Republicans approved Rep. Elise Stefanik to their No. 3 leadership position Friday — officially voting her into the post after Rep. Liz Cheney was forced out this week. The 134-46 tally for Stefanik (R-NY) was nearly guaranteed before the vote took place, given that she went into the meeting with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement and without a serious challenger. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) had launched a bid, but it failed to gain traction. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), who serves as vice chair of the House GOP Conference, was also reportedly interested in the role,
