Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday the administration will press ahead with plans to aid Black farmers for the “cumulative effect” of past discrimination by Washington, brushing aside a lawsuit by White farmers alleging discrimination because they are not eligible for a COVID-19 loan forgiveness program for disadvantaged producers. Mr. Vilsack said White farmers “did pretty well” under pandemic relief programs prior to the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, signed into law in March. Nearly 50 percent of Americans polled think that at least some social distancing measures will be permanent. Who can blame them? We have decided to make avoiding disease our full-time job. It’s more important than going to work or seeing your friends. It’s worth destroying the established Western social convention that we be able to see each other’s faces in public.
