Memphis' Juneteenth celebration is relocating from Robert Church Park in Downtown Memphis to Health Sciences Park in the Medical District, where the remains of Confederate Army General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife sit mostly unadorned. Juneteenth, sometimes referred to as "Emancipation Day," traces back to 1865 when a federal order ending slavery was read aloud in Galveston, Texas, two years after the actual Emancipation Proclamation and more than a month after the end of the Civil War.(Snip) Weeks later, a group of activists painted "Black Lives Matter" in bright yellow around the remains of the Forrests, which are still fenced off from the general public.

If there cannot be a celebration at Mt. Rushmore then there should not be a celebration here either.

Considering that Forrest was deeply regretful of his slave trading and what the KKK had devolved into he probably would welcome this celebration at his grave site.

The remains of Forrest and his wife will, at some point, be exhumed and reburied at Elm Springs in Tennessee, the headquarters of the Sons of Confederate Veterans who have received permission from the Forrest family to do so. That memorial service and celebration, if that's the right word, was scheduled for this summer but has been postponed because of the Chinese virus. Interesting that the Juneteenth celebration isn't being postponed because of the virus. It shows where people's priorities are anyway.

Some historians have said the two greatest geniuses produced by The Civil War were Lincoln and General Forrest. It amazes me how much the world has changed in my lifetime. There is a university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee known as Middle Tennessee State University and their nickname is (or was) The Blue Raiders. The Blue Raider was General Forrest. A student wearing a Confederate uniform would ride a horse on the sidelines during football games, waving a sword, urging The Blue Raiders to victory. Nowadays if you whistle Dixie you'd be surrounded by the Swat Squad.

When organizers claim that they are "reclaiming their history", they should remember in their history the Black slave traders who enabled the slave trade to flourish in Africa. Slavery of people of all races has occurred for all of history. It still occurs in many places in the world today. Instead of dwelling on the past and being so angry about what ended 150 years ago, they should be celebrating that they live in the USA where there is no slavery. There was a brief period where there were slaves but they were freed and slavery was made illegal. The fact that some people can't get past that and continue to use it as an excuse for every bad thing effecting Black people is what is holding them back from achieving greater things! Stop dwelling on the past! Learn from it, don't repeat it, and thank God everyday that you live in the USA where there is no slavery and you have the freedom to celebrate the anniversary of the end of slavery. People in many countries in the world cannot celebrate the same thing as slavery still continues (but nobody talks about it).
