Sen. Joe Manchin, the moderate Democrat from West Virginia, said in an interview Friday that he opposes legislation to give Washington, D.C., statehood — effectively killing a Democratic-led effort to reshape the American political map. "If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment and let the people of America vote," Manchin told WV MetroNews Talkline, a West Virginia news outlet.
Asked directly if he would oppose unilateral action by Congress to make the district a state, Manchin replied, "Yes, I would."
Stasha Rhodes, the campaign director for the pro-D.C.-statehood group 51 for 51, said in response

D.C. is a city - you can't turn a city into a state. PERIOD!

The political calculation of Senator Manchin: Manchin is currently the most powerful senator in Congress. If the District became an itty bitty state with 2 fine examples of the District's political class as Senators, just like that Manchin becomes an ineffectual, ignored nobody from West Virginia.

Time for Romney to twist the knife again and side with the democrats. He obviously thinks there is no such thing as bad publicity.

They need to just cede the non-federal property in D.C. back to Maryland and be done with it. That would help stop the stupid idea of making it a state, and probably wouldn't effect Maryland enough to notice.

Manchin is a wild card that can and does do strange things at times. But, he does understand basic arithmetic. He was reelected with 49% of the vote in a three way election. All of West Virginia's other Congresscritters and the other senator happen to be republicans. At home, republicans control the governor's office and legislature. Trump carried the state with a whopping 68% in both 2016 and 2020 with every one of the 55 counties turning red. Joe knows his senate seat is hanging by a thin thread, and if he goes left, his political career in West Virginia is over.

I don’t trust Manchin at all. He’s like McCain, always wanting to look like he’s a maverick but in the end always caving to the left.
Not to mention that DC statehood is utterly unconstitutional. Ordinarily I would say that it, if passed, a case should be sent to the SCOTUS, but that’s no longer a trustworthy option.

Have a golfing friend (retired) who is from WV and was a major player in the coal industry and dealt directly with Manchin when Governor. Says he is a chronic liar and is as dirty as they come; not to be trusted.

Wasn't DC created by an act of the Constitution. Rights of all 50 states are involved in this. It is not up to Congress alone. That will have to be overturned. Unless CJ Roberts declares it to be a tax!

If this holds true, some really sweet payolla must have been pushed Manchin's way. While he can't be trusted, wishing he would switch parties and put an "R" after his name now to buy some time and block a few more of the dim goodies.

Did the District of Columbia come from property ceded from Maryland or Virginia? I can't remember. But it could be ceded back.
Puerto Rico is a different matter. There are revolutionaries in Puerto Tico who want independence. If it became a state, there would be ongoing revolutionary violence.

Why would existing States' legislatures allow their Senators to admit DC and thereby dilute their power in the Federal gov't? Nothing makes sense in this f'd up country any longer.

Manchin cannot be trusted... he says one thing and does another... if DC becomes a state... then upper Michigan files for statehood as well...and upstate New York is talking about the same thing...the swamp doesn't know what's really happening out here in the real world...they have become soft and entitled and haven't a clue about WE the people...perhaps nervous nancy had better keep her fence in place...the commie/socialist takeover of America will never happen... the power is with WE the people...

Give DC back to Maryland, as wa done back in the 19th century with the Virginia portion of the Federal District. Keep area with Whitehouse, Capitol Building and Supreme Court in a Federal District.

If the Pubbies had any creativity - - any common sense - - I know - - I know - - that's really a fantasy - - but if they did - -
- - they would offer Mancini anything he wanted to switch to the Pubbie side - - and give them majority control. And I mean ANYTHING he wanted - - including being majority leader.
Can you read this, Mitch? If you have even a smidgen of patriotism - - you'd let Mancini become majority leader - - to save our beloved country from a communist takeover.
OK, folks - - raise your hand if you think Mitch has the courage - - and the love of country - - to offer Mancini the majority leadership. Anyone?

#22 - Senators are no longer accountable to state legislatures. Not since the 17th Amendment passed in 1913.

Manchin got the wife a big paying job from the Biden administration by head faking some Democrat initiatives. My guess he's doing the same thing on the DC statehood thing, because he wants a job for another family member, or gumada or someone. Never, ever trust a Democrat. Or for that matter, most Republicans. This is how the Deep State Swamp works.

Not to mention, #18, that if PR becomes a state, the people will have to start paying taxes. Right now they get all of the benefits without the taxes. Why would they want to change that?

Alright everyone this is about POWER.
No GOP Senator is gonna vote to diminish their own power.
So there will be 50 votes against DC statehood.
This applies for Manchin,& probably some other sane dems,as long as 50/50 stands he has real power & can veto whatever he doesn't want. Dems OTOH are powerless against Manchin because he can always threaten to nuke dem.
That is switch parties & hand the Senate back to GOP.
So Human Nature will keep DC outta the Senate.
Cheers for that.

Turn the District back to Maryland. MD is already Dem. DC residents should be satisfied with that representation...... right? They keep yammering about representation.... no problem..... right?
Or is there some other issue here? Like packing Congress.....
