Some lawmakers pushing for a permanent
expansion of unemployment aid

A group almost 40 Democratic lawmakers are asking President Joe Biden to overhaul the unemployment system by permanently enacting some pandemic-relief measures, such as allowing gig-economy workers to continue collecting jobless benefits. In a letter sent Friday to Mr. Biden, the lawmakers argue that traditional jobless benefits fail to reflect the realities of the modern workforce, as well as providing far too little aid for families when people lose their jobs. The signers include Senator Bernie Sanders, Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden and Representative Adam Schiff. The appeal comes a year after the pandemic caused U.S. unemployment to surge

Comments:

They want to keep people permanently wired-up to the welfare gravy train. It's time to get off the couch.

I went into two of our W TX stores yesterday. We were all surprised there was one checker with perhaps twelve in line. I was told an employee said they cannot get employees because unemployment pays more. What a mess.

Where I live every factory, store, medical care facility restaurant, and other business is starved for workers. It's not lack of population. It's lack of people who want to work. They say they're afraid of Covid-19 yet are out and about town spending their unemployment money, food stamps, free health care, not paying rent. The government has made it very easy to stay at home (or travel) while collecting lots of free benefits with no responsibility. When called back to work they can't/won't give up their new life on easy street.

I don't want to hear how employers can't find help. My overqualified white relative who doesn't collect unemployment can't find a job. If the manager in a store is black or Latino, don't expect to get hired.

it only took about 70 years for the Soviet Union to collapse under its own edicts of control and power grabbing. if the trend continues we are headed toward rapid decline at the beginning on a social level and then financial and then complete nothingness. it will be like pre-World War II Germany, that is, if our President is not elected by being re-elected. house of reps and senate are useless as long as mccarthy and mcconnell are leading the repubs. there has got to be a kick you in the b--ls type repub leader in both houses. no more mr. nice guys at this point in time the only really tough guys are women.

Struggling, productive workers supporting the lazy, helpless and incompetent. It's been the same system since the 60s. All the democrats need to do is make sure that there are more takers than givers.

Venushki “Venus” Hemachandra has made it her mission to diversify the often white and male dominated medical marijuana industry. The founder and owner of Herbiculture, a 4,000-square-foot dispensary housed in a business park in Burtonsville, Montgomery County, says she’s used to surprising people by going against age, gender and ethnicity expectations. Already licensed as a dispenser, the Randallstown resident, 31, last year became one of the few women in Maryland also licensed as a grower and processor. As India announced grim records — the highest daily coronavirus infection tallies in a single country — Americans were enjoying a spring of vaccine abundance. In India, just 1.4 percent of the population has been fully vaccinated, and overwhelmed hospitals have been running short of oxygen. Meanwhile, in the United States — where 1 in 4 Americans are fully vaccinated and more than 40 percent have gotten at least the first dose — a major Miami hospital, Jackson Memorial, said it would begin winding down vaccinations because of excess supply and weakening demand. In Michigan, health workers are rolling out shots to high school

n the debate over whether one should or should not get the COVID vaccination, much has been said about the “science.” However, I’m not sure any encyclopedic knowledge of “science” is required to make this health decision. Simple statistical analysis should suffice to inform one’s ultimate decision. Statistics is primarily a study of probabilities. Fortunately, as regards COVID mortality rates, these probabilities are now known. That is, COVID mortality statistics broken down by age cohorts are now “known knowables.” For example, through statistics as of April 7, the odds an American under the age of 25 would die from COVID were 1-in-106,217.
