MINNEAPOLIS — The funeral of Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old Black man shot and killed by a white Brooklyn Center police officer, will be held in north Minneapolis next week. Rev. Al Sharpton will be delivering the eulogy at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday. The funeral begins at noon. Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Wright. Potter was released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond. Both Potter and police chief Tim Gannon have resigned from their positions. Wright was pulled over for a traffic violation and was later

Comments:

Who will provide security? With Sharpton whipping the crowd into a frenzy I would not get within 20 miles of the funeral.

Al, don't forget to mention how Daunte robbed a woman at gunpoint, choked her while grabbing her rent money she had hidden under her bra. But he was a good boy.

Writing a eulogy for Daunte is going to be quite a challenge: high school drop out, father of a likely welfare supported out of wedlock child, accused of armed robbery, illegal drug user, shot while fleeing police (for the second and last time). He packed a lot into 20 short years, I guess.

I am sure Daunte Idindonuffin will be remembered as a bright young man with a wonderful future ahead. How he had plans on going to medical school and specializing in pediatric heart and neurosurgery, how he volunteered at the local Jewish hospice facility and tutored elementary school children in math and science. How he was in the church choir and led home bible study groups and had a street ministry preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the homeless and less fortunate. Yes, he will be sorely missed. But on the other hand, his family will be taking an out-of-court wrongful death settlement in the neighborhood of $30 to $50 million. Then they can all go buy new Cadillacs and spend a month in grief recovery in Vegas at Caesar's Palace.

Two Minnesota National Guard members on duty in the Twin Cities were injured early Sunday after being fired at in what authorities said was a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis. The Guard said the injuries were minor. One Guard member was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries from shattered glass; the other was treated at the scene for superficial wounds. The Guard says the two were part of a "neighborhood security team" deployed in Minneapolis for Operation Safety Net, a multi-agency effort to provide security amid the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial. MINNEAPOLIS — The fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright and tactics used to respond to people protesting his killing are putting Gov. Tim Walz increasingly at odds with the left flank of his base, threatening to fray Democratic allies heading into the critical 2022 election cycle. A growing number of DFL officials are calling for the first-term governor to reassign the case of former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter, who shot and killed Wright, to Attorney General Keith Ellison. And Walz is facing a backlash for not roundly condemning tear gas and projectiles used in the first nights of protests

Washington state lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday setting a target to stop sales of gasoline-fueled vehicles there beginning in 2030, five years sooner than California. The target is not a firm mandate and is contingent on the state adopting a tax on vehicle miles traveled, a measure to help pay for new transportation infrastructure, according to the text of the bill. The move by the Pacific Northwest state comes as efforts to boost adoption of electric vehicles are accelerating over concerns about fossil fuels' contribution to climate change. Earlier today the defense rested in the murder trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, charged in connection with the in-custody death of George Floyd. Chauvin waived his right to testify on his own behalf, asserting his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent during the course of the trial. That was not a surprising development. But what came next was quite surprising, and potentially a critical moment in the case for the prosecution. The prosecution advised the Court that it would have one rebuttal witness.
