AUGUSTA, Ga. — Pressure in sports and its level of intensity comes in all shapes and sizes. It differs from athlete to athlete and from event to event. For Hideki Matsuyama, who woke up Sunday morning with a four-shot lead entering the final round of the 85th Masters, he carried with him to the first tee a weight of pressure on his shoulders that perhaps no other player in golf has ever felt.
Matsuyama carried the hopes of the entire nation of Japan with him to his 2:40 p.m. tee time Sunday. (Snip) Worse yet, Matsuyama had to attempt to sleep on Saturday night with the collective burden of expectation

Overwritten much? It's a golf game people. Nevertheless, congratulations to Hideki Matsuyama.

One little distinction the author of the headline misses. Tiger Woods is African-American. Tiger Woods is the Tiger Woods of America, where he is successful and famous because he is a superb golfer, but not because of his race. Matsuyama is not to Japan as Tiger Woods is to America. Matsuyama is a superb golfer but in Japan he is the beneficiary of his race. This is not the same thing at all.

That shot into the water near the end almost costs him the entire thing. Glad he was able to come back after that.

I haven’t seen a lot of Matsuyama since I quit watching cable TV. But from what I have seen, he impresses me as having ages of maturity beyond Tiger’s.

An amazing feat winning the masters after losing both legs in an IED blast, being blinded by a sniper and having 70% of his flesh burned off as he rescued puppies from a fire.

Matsuyama didn't experience any more pressure than any other person in a position to win the Masters. In fact, his four shot lead going into the final round reduced the amount of pressure. Try going into the final round tied with others or having a one shot lead. There is no room for error. He may have ended up losing if Xander's shot on the 16th hadn't dribble into the water. Also, how about those players who were four shots or less back of Matsuyama. They spent the entire round taking chances on a course where taking chances more often than not backfires. Just ask Xander.

Halfway through yesterday I turned to my husband and asked, “what are they going to do if he loses? Murder his family? Last time I checked Japan is not North Korea.”
The commentators are such a bunch of drama queens.

Tiger Woods of Japan? Huh? Does that mean we can soon expect Hidecki to flip his sports car while doing 85 in a residential area?
And addressing #2, Eldrick is African-American? Last I checked he was half Thai and an eighth Chinese (which makes him about 2/3rd Asian) plus a quarter black and an eighth white. But despite being mostly Asian, he's labelled an African-American. That "just one one drop" thing, you know. Talk about Jim Crow!

I am just glad he didn't have a melt-down a la Greg Norman. The whole nation of Japan might have committed Hari-kari or bombed Pearl Harbor again.

Once again the Master's doesn't disappoint. Congrats to Hideki Matsuyama.
Young American Will Zalatoris is going to be a force on the PGA Tour for a long time, great game, great attitude and composure and a infective smile. Patrick Reed nicknamed him "showtime!"

Congratulations to Hideki Matsuyama. Despite all of the Asian hate crimes, not wearing a mask while playing golf, and not social distancing all the time, white supremacists (especially in Georgia!), and repressive voting laws, you still managed to be able to focus enough on your golf game to be able to overcome all of the oppression from the white golfers and audience members that you must have felt since you were in Georgia. The horrors you must have lived through to get that green jacket are unimaginable. I'm sure CNN and MSNBC will have full descriptions of your oppression on as soon as they can create it.
