MINNEAPOLIS — A seventh day of testimony has begun in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, but the jurors were not present when attorneys made their arguments Tuesday about whether a witness to George Floyd's arrest should be compelled to testify. (Snip) In Tuesday's hearing out of the view of the jury, Hall appeared via video hookup and explained through his attorney that he would be exposed to a potential third-degree murder charge and other possible felony counts should he be forced to answer questions in Chauvin's trial. Cousins said her client "has been provided no immunity, no protection for his testimony

Comments:

It's odd how so few people in the trial actually knew George Floyd. And now his best friend refuses to testify.

The witness is already exposed to a 3rd degree murder charge. That isn't a valid defense. Now, he could claim his testimony would incriminate himself, and assert the 5th. Then, the Judge would have to evaluate whether that is true, or not. Since his testimony would not be about himself, but what he saw, I cannot see that a 5th amendment claim would be valid. The witness can add on contempt of court to his exposures, if he does not testify.

The person in question, Hall, was Floyd's drug supplier. Floyd's white 'girlfriend' testified to that, on cross examination. She did not like Hall. Defense Counsel had a good day today, laying the groundwork for a dynamite closing argument.

According to the testimony of the store clerk, Morries Hall had attempted to pass a counterfeit bill earlier and it was rejected. So, apparently, Hall got his big dumb violence-prone junkie friend to take one of the fake bills to buy a pack of cigarettes and get the change. The clerk was probably too intimidated to refuse this large man who was acting strangely due to being on drugs. They then left the store. When the owner had the clerk and other employees go out to retrieve the cigarettes and change, the two miscreants refused. That is why the police were called in the first place. Floyd and Hall were to stupid to just leave. They were so high on drugs they stayed around until the police got there.

The way to resolve this for the defense is to have each juror lay down on the floor and have Chauvin use the same restraint technique on them. If they find that they can't breathe with his knee on their back then they might conclude this contributed to Floyd's suffocation. There were no marks on Floyd's neck and no blood vessel ruptures that would indicate strangulation pressure was used so I doubt it would be anything more than a little uncomfortable for a reasonably sized adult with no health issues.

President Biden on Tuesday continued to show support for corporations that condemn Georgia’s sweeping new voting law, but he cautioned that boycotts and canceled events could harm low-income workers. Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines and Major League Baseball are among the big-name brands to denounce the state’s new rules, which critics say are restrictive and will disenfranchise mostly voters of color. “It is reassuring to see that for-profit operations and businesses are speaking up about how these new Jim Crow laws are just antithetical to who we are,” Biden said at a news conference. “The other side of it is, when

President Joe Biden’s son Hunter tried everything to wean himself off alcohol and crack — from yoga and therapy to psychoactive drugs and the anesthetic ketamine. But in his new memoir, he credits the secretions of the Sonoran Desert toad with keeping him sober for a year. He describes how he traveled to Mexico in 2014, as his marriage was unraveling, in a desperate attempt to get his life back in order, using drug treatments that were not legal in the United States. First, he was given ibogaine, a psychedelic derived from plants at a clinic in Tijuana, which he

Michigan reported a record number of coronavirus cases on Monday to top the daily tally among U.S. states, about a month after easing restrictions when new cases showed a downward trend. It reported 11,082 cases on Monday, surpassing a previous daily peak of 10,140 hit on November 20 and bringing the total case load to 779,974. Michigan is currently the worst affected U.S. state in terms of new cases and hospitalizations per 100,000 people in the week to April 5. It is the only state to report more than 7,000 new cases on Monday. Following a slew of other states

Routine use of disinfectants to fight the coronavirus is mostly unnecessary, as the risk of transmission through touching surfaces is "low," the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday. In a science brief based on analysis of the latest available data, the agency said intense cleaning was needed in only a few scenarios. This news could bring an end to what some refer to as "hygiene theater," or routine deep cleaning of hotel rooms, business premises, and public transport. Such measures might appear reassuring but are costly and, it seems, of limited use. The brief said the

CHICAGO — Government-backed affordable housing in Chicago has largely been confined to majority-Black neighborhoods with high concentrations of poverty over the last two decades, a design that has perpetuated the city's long history of segregation. As the neighborhoods faced rising divestment, gun violence and food deserts, the lack of affordable housing in other parts of the city restricted many people of color from leaving. But now, using its largest pot of federal housing funding, Chicago wants to chart a corrective path by aggressively pushing for more affordable homes in high-income, well-resourced areas, which housing experts say would unlock previously unavailable opportunities

The USS Constitution is one of the country's first frigates and is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. It was launched in 1797 in Boston, Massachusetts, and now sits in Baltimore Harbor. It remains unclear how many specific actions Biden is expected to take on guns, but reporting indicates the president will also seek to close the “Charleston Loophole,” which allows licensed dealers to transfer firearms to buyers before a background check is completed.
