A Proposal to (Sort of) Make DC a State

Original Article

Posted By: Judy W., 4/2/2021 9:59:48 AM

Radical Democrats, not content to control all three electoral elements of the federal government, are urging that two new states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., be added to the Union. Legislation to make Washington, D.C. a state has already been drawn up. (Snip) Given that 100 percent of the territory that now constitutes the federal district was ceded to the national government by the state of Maryland, why should the federal government not retrocede to Maryland all of the district that is not currently occupied by the actual seat of the government, retaining only the facilities on or immediately adjacent to the Mall, such as the Capitol Building;

Comments:

As a resident of Maryland, I recoil in horror at this idea. We are already horribly oppressed by the overwhelming, veto-proof Dem majority in the state legislature. My suggestion is to let New York state or California have them, along with two of our counties, Montgomery and Prince George's. Is there any law that a state has to be contiguous?

As a former resident of Maryland, I endorse this plan. MD is the perfect government for Washington on the Potomac and its environs. Larry Hogan would have two "Pearls" to play with, and all that Federal "tax" money.

I sent this very proposal to my senators and congressman less than two weeks ago. "Loss of the right to vote for members of congress and the president has long been a concern for DC residents and I believe that the former Virginia (VA) portion of the District of Columbia found the proper solution. I also firmly believe that VA's example is the correct solution to the district's remaining residential population. On July 17, 1790, Congress passed the Residence Act, creating a permanent seat for the federal government on lands ceded from Maryland (MD)and VA. After a number of years of former VA residents' concern that living in the district had cost them their right to vote for members of Congress or for president, in 1847 the VA General Assembly officially accepted retrocession of the former VA land and DC residents on those lands regained their VA residency, along with those rights. With the exception of federal property (land currently housing federal buildings), the remaining land and all DC residents should rejoin MD. Washington, DC was never intended to be anything but the seat of the federal government and a potential seaport (the latter under Pres Washington's expectations). Washington, DC's purpose should not change. However, recognizing the position DC residents find themselves in and looking for a logical way to correct the situation, I fully support all current DC residential land being receded back to MD and the residents of DC regaining MD residency."

If the neo-marxists succeed in making D.C. and Puerto Rico states, then another solution would be for several 'red' states to divide in half. Eastern Washington and Oregon have been wanting to separate from their respective states, that would give Congress four more senators and Texas, I believe, is supposed to be able to separate in five states. Alaska is even bigger than Texas, I wonder how many states could be carved from there. I realize that not all of these new states would necessarily vote Republican or Conservative but I'm betting the overwhelming majority would.

The dems want DC and PR to be states in order to gain 4 dem senators.They are not interested in fairness. Giving the land back to Maryland will never make any sense to them. IF a couple of blue states turn red will the dems look to add US territories as states to gain more dem senators? This is the game the dems are playing. Power and money, it's always about power an money, the people be dam*ed

It's actually a terrific idea, considering it would blunt the "new state" issue, and the additional Senators and 1 House seat that would be required. And, since there is already precedence with Virginia already doing this, per #2 comments, then it would be the best, and quickest solution. Sorry to those MD residence who aren't die-hard blue liberals, but you have no real expectation of turning "red" any time soon. Not sure Alaska has it in their charter to have the option of splitting into different states, as does Texas, and was something that was highlighted in Laura Bush's book on Texas.

Since Maine was once part of Massachusetts, separated by New Hampshire, I would say states do not have to be contiguous. Put D.C. up for auction on Ebay. The highest bidder gets stuck with it.

This week, traditional Jews and Christians celebrate special acts of God in human history. Yet, polling data now show that an increasing number of young people, including those from religious homes, doubt even the existence of God. Moreover, polls probing such young “religiously unaffiliated agnostics and atheists” have found that science — or at least the claims of putative spokesmen for science — have played an outsized sole in cementing disaffection with religious belief. In one, more than two-thirds of self-described atheists, and one-third of agnostics, affirm “the findings of science make the existence of God less probable.”

In a victory for free speech, the rule of law, and common sense, a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit has ruled that a philosophy professor could not be forced to use a transgender student’s “preferred pronouns,” and that his suit against the university for violation of his First and 14th Amendment rights could proceed. The court’s decision is the first of its kind, and establishes a needed boundary against American culture’s new, brutish sexual orthodoxy. At least within academia, one can no longer be compelled to say things one doesn’t believe.

We ought to ask ourselves what public schools will look like and feel like once radical educrats and politicos agree to reopen them. I think schools will re-open across the board, but only when our ruling class is good and ready for that. (Snip) I don’t have a crystal ball, but I think we can infer eight negative outcomes down the pike after a long period of politicized school closures that were never justified by medical science. I imagine our ruling elites will be happy with such outcomes. We should be prepared for the following. 1. Even More Peer Pressure to Conform. Our famine of social connection will likely spark a greater

Who will lead the deplorables’ exodus from the bondage that the political-corporate-cultural oligarchy imposes on America? The power that the oligarchy has gathered since 2015 pales by comparison with the resentment it created thereby, and the wave of public opinion that is building against it. America’s deplorables, clingers, irredeemables, chumps, dregs, neanderthals, etc.—persecuted, increasingly prosecuted for being on the wrong side of the oligarchy—yearn for political leaders to rescue their way of life. Demand is so high because most self-proclaimed conservative leaders talk the voters’ talk, but walk the big donors’ oligarchic walk. A recent YouTube interview with Peter Whittle led me, belatedly, to her 1999 memoir, Survivors, and let me begin by saying this: however much you may know about the grooming gangs – and, in particular, about the years of shameless stonewalling by police and other authorities who were terrified of Muslim unrest – reading about it all from the point of view

There are so many true and rotten things one can say about progressive values, but I think most will agree that one of the worst things progressives do is attack boys. There’s a reason for this: If raised right, boys are hardwired for courage. We see this in a wonderful way in a video someone posted showing an unknown teen in Loudon County, Virginia (which is famous for canning Dr. Seuss and trying to dox “white supremacist” parents) politely refusing to go along with his white teacher’s insistent racism. The short video brings together a lot of newsworthy trends.

Two weeks ago, I wrote of the Department of Justice’s overreach respecting some of the hundreds of January 6 defendants. On Friday the D.C. Circuit clipped the department’s wings. I expect more such losses as time goes on and the Department must actually present evidence in contested trials. The ploy of keeping in D.C. jails without bail some of the protestors who engaged in no specific violent acts at the Capitol until their cases can be heard was very obviously designed to compel them to plea bargain so they could return home to their families and jobs, and the three-judge panel wasn’t buying it.
