Gavin Newsom’s State of the State: ‘I Have

LOS ANGELES, California — California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his annual “State of the State” address from an empty Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, hoping to rally support as he faces a likely recall election in the coming months. Newsom struck an optimistic tone, noting that the state’s coronavirus numbers were improving. And he admitted errors: “We have made mistakes,” he said. “I have made mistakes. But we own them. We learn from them. And we never stop trying.” The “state of the state,” he said, “remains determined — and I mean, determined.” He took a swipe at his critics

Federal COVID-19 Bailout Prohibits States From
Cutting Taxes

Buried within the $1.9 trillion emergency spending bill that Congress sent to President Joe Biden's desk on Wednesday is a provision that could effectively block states from cutting taxes if they accept federal bailout dollars. That provision, added to the bill by the Senate last week, could put a halt to several states' plans to cut taxes this year as a way to stimulate economic growth following the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on how the text is interpreted, the measure could also make it illegal for states to create new tax credit programs like the ones that have become a popular mechanism for expanding school choice.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced around a week ago that he would be lifting the order, saying, “Texans have mastered the daily habits to avoid getting COVID [Chinese coronavirus].”

Earlier today I wrote about how so-called journalists had achieved peak stupid in response to a segment Tucker Carlson did on his program Tuesday night about New York Times tech reporter Taylor Lorenz. To recap, Carlson talked about how Lorenz used International Women’s Day to portray herself as a victim of a year-long, online “harassment and smear campaign”, which she says “destroyed her life.” In a segment on how powerful people like Meghan Markle were declaring themselves powerless, Carlson took issue with Lorenz trotting out the victim card, especially considering her position at the supposed newspaper of record at a time when so many are out of work.

It doesn’t take much for the nation’s voters to become concerned that President Biden, the oldest new chief executive at 78 years old, might not be up for the job. The latest proof: His resistance to holding a full-blown press conference now 49 days into his presidency has half the country worried. In the latest Rasmussen Reports survey of likely voters, 50% said they are not confident that “Joe Biden is physically and mentally up to the job of being president of the United States.” Another 48% have confidence in Biden, though only 34% were “very confident” that he was up to the job.

So how bad is that illegal immigration crisis getting at the border? The Biden team threw out their “border czar,” Roberta Jacobson, a National Security Council member in charge of southern border affairs, to try to deal with mess they created. But it was a disaster when the “czar” refused to admit that the crisis was in fact a crisis. First, she tried to claim that it was President Donald Trump’s fault for causing “pent-up demand.” Funny how it isn’t Trump illegal aliens are citing when they say why they are coming, they say it’s because of Biden’s own words they are coming, they’re even wearing shirts with his name on them

DES MOINES — Senate Republicans indicated Wednesday they expect to forge ahead with broad-based tax reform yet this session despite a number of unresolved issues clouding the outlook of Iowa’s economy. “What we’re trying to do is put Iowa on a shining pathway going forward and re-imagine what a competitive tax code looks like here in the state,” said Sen. Dan Dawson, R-Council Bluffs, before the Senate Ways and Means Committee advanced a major tax policy bill on a party-line vote. Senate Study Bill 1250 proposes to accelerate the state’s 2018 income tax cuts by eliminating the existing revenue “triggers” that need to be met before lower tax rates kick in.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has criticized West Virginia Governor Jim Justice's plan to introduce major tax cuts, after the Republican took aim at Manchin over the latest COVID-19 stimulus package. Justice complained Monday about a clause in the American Rescue Plan that prevents states from using relief funds to offset revenue losses from tax cuts. The governor wants to eliminate personal income taxes in the state, phasing them out over the next few years, beginning with a 60 percent cut in January 2022. The lost income tax revenue would be recouped through increases in other taxes but would still leave the state with a $90 million shortfall, according to The Intelligencer.

JEFFERSON CITY — If Missouri wants a share of the new federal pandemic relief aid package, Republicans may have to delay their quest to cut state taxes. The $1.9 trillion stimulus package heading to President Joseph Biden’s desk contains language saying states cannot “directly or indirectly” reduce tax rates if they want the money. The aim of the provision is to bar states from cutting taxes and then back-filling the revenue hole with federal dollars meant for relief. At stake for Missouri is an estimated $5 billion in relief that is designed to help pay for government services and help businesses, families and schools weather the ongoing pandemic.

Sources report that overcrowding at Border Patrol facilities increases daily. At one Border Patrol Sector in Arizona, Tuesday’s detention figures show 500% occupancy over the COVID-19 adjusted capacity. According to sources, the detention capacity recommendations are made to provide the safest environment for front-line agents and migrants during the pandemic. Until recently, most migrants entering the United States illegally were swiftly returned to Mexico under a CDC emergency order. Many migrants, including family units and unaccompanied children (UACs), were returned within two hours of crossing. The Biden Administration is watering down the application of the CDC order, resulting in the reported overcrowding.

This is the second time in the last two weeks that a top U.S. immigration official has resorted to begging people not to come. I think it might be all they’re willing to do by way of “enforcement” to deter child migrants from entering the country. You can tell border czar Roberta Jacobson is eager for this clip to circulate in Mexican and Central American media: The border is closed, she says. This is not the time, and is never the time, to try to enter the U.S. irregularly. (“Irregularly” may be a Team Biden euphemism for “illegally.”) But the border isn’t closed.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's government is worried the new U.S. administration's asylum policies are stoking illegal immigration and creating business for organized crime, according to officials and internal assessments seen by Reuters. Ever since President Joe Biden won the White House vowing to undo the hardline approach of his predecessor Donald Trump, Mexico has both looked forward to an end to migration burdens imposed by Trump, and braced for a new influx of people. Detentions on the U.S border have surged since Biden took office on Jan. 20. Mexico has urged Washington to help stem the flow by providing development aid to Central America

It’s almost our favorite day of the year: the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, when we can fast-forward our clocks, stop the winter darkness that descends by mid-afternoon, and crawl out of our stuffy homes after dinner into the evening light. That’s why a glorious piece of legislation popping up in the Senate is a bright spot this week — not only because it’s bipartisan, but also because it would literally grant daylight to weary Americans.

The whistleblower told Berenson that the FAA issued a guidance about a month ago requiring controllers to “wear masks at all times” while at work and in position, and warned that the directive could have devastating consequences for airline passengers and pilots.

Still, the CDC continues to recommend that all Americans wear masks, except in certain private settings when individuals are fully vaccinated, unless the goalpost-shifting Dr. Fauci gets his way. This whole "masks don't seem to be having much effect, but wear them anyway" bureaucratic calculus may seem like a frivolous controversy to Americans
