It seems we are living through a phase of so-called “cancel culture” these days. Just this week, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it will no longer publish six lesser-known books by the famed children’s author due to offensive and racist depictions. Mr. Potato Head is now non-gender. Some episodes of The Muppet Show has special warning labels on Disney+. Aunt Jemima is KO’d on the syrup shelves. In a sweeping wave of reassessing cultural images we have grown up with in our American life, a new and more sensitive spotlight is being presented on the way we view the past through the prism of a more politically correct 2021.

Stupid. What makes you think that you should have the right to go through life and never be offended?

I've not been impressed by the younger hosts. Ben tries to keep the torch of Robert Osborne lit, but the gale force winds of change will eventually snuff it out. I purposely avoided their 14 week (14 weeks!) of spotlighting women directors since the dawn of cinema. I never missed an introduction or follow-up by Robert, and now I miss them all on purpose.
We watch TV less and less. We basically watch selective shows on Science, History, Discovery and TCM. Dish is up to $120 a month, and its getting harder to justify. TCM's "contextualizing" is a sop to the mob, they won't be satisfied very long.

Sorry, I forgot to note that the "learned" TCM host referred to GWTW has being made after WWII. 1938 is now after WWII?

Cancelling books is equivalent to book burning. Contextualizing books is equivalent of editing, warning or otherwise putting the book in a negative light. It can be more harmful to the book than negative book reviews.

P.C. insanity brought to you by social justice " warriors". If the movie appeals to you watch it and skip the
" woke" intros. There are people out there that actually believe that actors don't memorize other people's words but speak their own words. Robert Osborne loved the old movies for what they are, movies. Feminists say that Ginger did everything that Fred did except backward and in high heels..........uh,..........no. Ginger never had any solo dance numbers. Not one. But that doesn't fit the lefts agenda. It's always about agenda.

Just so nobody goes after "Live and Let Die" with Jeffrey Holder playing the voodoo king. Or cuts Gene Wilder out of "Silver Streak" for dressing in blackface. Actually, several Bond films like "Dr. No" with Joseph Weisman playing the Chinese villain or Sean Connery in "You Only Live Twice" transforming into a rather burly Japanese fisherman could be banned. Was Odd Job in "Goldfinger" a stereotyped Korean "man-servant" not to mention Ian Flemings delight in giving sexually suggestive names to his female characters. Better key the old DVDs in case these get censored as well.

Interestingly, the first thing that went through my mind when The Supreme Court decided against hearing the Texas case thus installing illegitimate Joe Biden-Ho was the movie The Four Feathers. Coney Barrett, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and John Roberts all deserve a White Feather for cowardice when the USA needed a decision. I learned a lot from old movies.

I better go buy “The Searchers” on DVD. My absolute favorite John Wayne movie ever. I first saw it at a theater in El Paso when I was 11. It would be a tragedy if it ever got cancelled out of circulation. God! I hate liberals!

We held onto cable specifically for TCM for years but we cut the cord and got out of the cable racket in 2017 not long after Robert Osborne's death.
NONE of the later day hosts on TCM could so much as kiss the soles of Robert Osborne's shoes... they are nobody, know knowings whose daddy may have been a Hollywood hot shot in the day but who are woefully inadequate. Disgusting progessive wokesters. When Robert died, TCM died.

Freedom from offense is not a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Let us, as free citizens, examine content for ourselves and decide if anything is worth the fuss. I do not need some liberal gatekeeper to decide what I shall be permitted to watch or read.

I get that many don't like the TCM hosts, particularly when compared to the great Robert Osborne.
But TCM is still playing the great films like GWTW, and playing them without commercial interruption. The channel is still one of the best available in the cable universe.

The channel is called TCM. That stands for Turner Classic Movies. To me Classic means from years gone by. People thought differently back then but it's still part of history. Someone said that if we didn't study history we were doomed to repeat it. TCM why not let your views decide what they should watch or not watch. I think I
plus the millions of views of TCM can figure it out for ourselves.

There's not a single movie, book, song, TV show, artwork, lifestyle, spoken word, or thought that doesn't or couldn't offend SOMEONE.
It's impossible to accurately or fairly judge yesterday's events with today's eyes. Historical context can't randomly be removed. There really are idiots out there who think that if we just delete Yesterday, our problems will be gone Today. Poof!
How about LEARNING from the past, instead of CANCELLING it?

I'm thinking our nation, our once wonderful country is one big Confederate statue and Rebel flag to an entire group of cancel people bent on our total destruction who will never be satisfied, ever. TCM is all that I have left and a marathon of Bogy movies is my last hold out of entertainment. Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne are in there too.

Hey # 2 (and others) just give Dish a call and tell them it's too much and that you have better offers to switch to Direct TV or stream (Disney+. Hulu, and or/whatever) but that you're willing to stay if they drop it to $50/month. I just lowered my bill twice in the last two years (from $120 to $63 and then $112 to 68). It goes back up every year, but I call and tell them I'd like it back down and they comply.
You have to stay on hold for a while, and they'll offer premium channels for more $ but stick to your guns and be friendly and it works. They'd rather get $60/month or so rather than lose a longtime customer.
One of these days I will cut it altogether, but for now I like TCM and some other channels and will keep making deals.

By recording everything for later viewing, it is pretty easy for us to do our own Cancel Culture. When we view, we skip by anything we don’t want to watch. This kind of rubbish. Commercials that are for products being sold to only blacks - from cars to cereal to facial tissues and on and on… Keeps our remote control busy. And our bps low.

TCM is about to learn a very hard lesson: When you give these lie-beral fascists an inch (to try to appease them), they will demand a mile.
Today you are "scrutinizing" films and making PC commentary about them. Tomorrow, expect the demands for millions of dollars to make up for the way TCM "helped to perpetuate racism through showing these racist movies". They see how weak you are, and will be going in for the kill in 3-2-1...
Like with so many other companies that tried to appease these PC fascists, you might as well just go out of business now. It's inevitable. And you only have yourselves to blame!!!

Mickey Rooney nearly ruined 'Breakfast At Tiffany's'. I wouldn't want a TV station or streaming service to delete his scenes or ban the movie but if I had owned a copy of the movie, I'd fast-forward his scenes. His insulting and cartoonish performance was embarrassing.

#32 - Mickey Rooney was not responsible for his part. He was an actor hired and followed the director, the great Hollywood icon Blake Edwards. Its easier for the woke culture to cancel Mickey Rooney than Blake Edwards.

Those bossy media dems are trying to bully everyone into thinking like they do. In fact, they seem to want to do our thinking for us according to their conclusions. But remember, they are human too and their opinions are just that, opinions. It is each individual's responsibility to make choices & conclusions in this free country! Stop bombarding the USA with the brainwashing attempts, dems!

I would guess that the problem with Psycho is that too many real psychos are today in positions of political power and don't like that term being used.

Lol. Contextualizing rather than cancelling to a TCM older demographic that already knows the 'context.' Desperate virtue signaling to the woke thing outside the door. They are trying to keep the demon at bay; otherwise, their entire library is burned to the ground.
