Canada To Follow Australia’s Lead In
Charging Facebook For Links

After blocking links to all news content in Australia, Facebook has reportedly “friended” the country again by coming back to the negotiating table, at least according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison. That doesn’t mean that Mark Zuckerberg has dropped his objections to Austrailia’s pending legislation that would force the social media giant to pay for links to Australian news content, however. Neither side seems to be backing down at this point. Australia may not be in this battle alone, though. We’re learning this weekend that Canada is drafting a similar measure and basically daring Facebook to impose a blackout

He points out the threat implicit in the lack of clarity when the word 'links' is used. This site is built on links and fair use ledes.

Gee, if I can't get news about Canada on Facebook, what am I ever going to do?!?!?!? /sarcasm off This reminds me of a "South Park" episode where Canada went on strike, and the rest of the world just ignored them.

Nobody likes to pay taxes. But FB is a global monopoly and their behavior reflects abuse tied to market dominance. America once recognized the dangers of such and even broke up the likes of ATT, Carnegie Steel, Standard Oil (Rockefeller) to return good old competition to the marketplace. Taxation won't actually be sufficient. FaceBook and Amazon need to be broken up.

There may only be one thing left to do with Neera Tanden’s nomination to head the Office of Management and Budget — go through its pockets and look for loose change. The White House has become desperate to find at least one Republican vote to make up for the loss of Joe Manchin in Tanden’s Senate confirmation. Their best bets, Susan Collins and Mitt Romney, declared Tanden too partisan and her patterns of attacks on members of Congress too toxic for this key position. Joe Biden’s second-best bets were among the Retiring Caucus.

Statewide Major Disaster Declaration Request

Governor Greg Abbott requested statewide designation for major disaster relief from President Biden. Biden denied the statewide designation and only approved some counties in Texas, not all of them. Abbott asked for a declaration that covered the entire state because the winter storm knocked out power and heat throughout the state, as well as leaving millions of Texans without water. Texas has 254 counties. Biden approved only 77 counties for disaster relief. The governor calls it an important first step but it falls far short of what Texas officials requested. Biden signed the declaration late Friday. It covers much of the Texas population.

They’re never going to let you go. The Biden administration is still coasting on the vaccine rollout developed by the Trump administration but according to Joe Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki, we’re still in for “months and months” of suffering and sacrifice. “We need to remain vigilant…It’s still going to be months and months of sacrifice, of work, of suffering, unfortunately, in order to get through the pandemic,” Psaki said during Monday’s press briefing. As of this writing, the vaccination rate in America is 1.7 million a day, making it the world leader. This rate alone does not indicate “months and months”

There are results in from a new poll and it’s not good for Democrats. The NBC poll confirms something that anecdotally we’ve all been seeing over the past four years. That a significant number of blue-collar workers no longer believe that the Democratic Party is for them and they’re fleeing to the Republican Party. According to the poll, the number of blue-collar workers who call themselves Republicans has gone up by 12 percent in the last decade. Meanwhile, blue-collar workers who identify as Democrats have dropped by eight points. The number of black and Hispanic blue-collar workers who identify as Republican has also gone up,

A friend who is a superb doctor sent along this communication from Fairview/University of Minnesota Health Services: Got that? Vaccination changes nothing! Wear masks, wash your hands frequently, socially distance and–above all–stay home! “Until it’s gone,” which is never. My friend comments: From an experienced medical facility, I expect better. It will never be gone, we will have it like every other coronavirus, like every other flu. Unlike smallpox, it is impossible to eradicate. Thus, we are reaching the endemic COVID phase soon, the post-pandemic period. So I am guessing they want us socially distanced forever?

Those who read Power Line faithfully know that Andrew Cuomo may be in legal jeopardy. The Justice Department reportedly is investigating him and some members of his staff for their conduct in response to a DOJ request for information about nursing home deaths in New York. John Daukas was principal deputy to the DOJ’s assistant attorney general for civil rights at the time the Department requested information from Cuomo. Later, he became the acting assistant attorney general for civil rights. In this Wall Street Journal op-ed, Daukas explains why Cuomo should be worried about the federal probe. Daukas pulls the facts together in a way that is helpful

It’s been more than a month since the app stores of Google and Apple joined forces with Amazon Web Services to knee-cap an upstart competitor, Parler. The stated reasoning was Parler’s lack of content moderation policies, which Apple, in particular, claimed led to Parler’s use as a forum to “plan, coordinate, and facilitate the illegal activities in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.” This reasoning was confidently repeated across the corporate press. “The Capitol mob began organizing . . . on platforms like Parler and Gab,” Vox asserted. It appears that some Republicans like Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are hoping that they can distance themselves from President Donald Trump and/or that he’ll ride off quietly into the sunset. But what they’re missing in all this is why people support Trump to begin with. Because here was someone finally responding frankly to them who did in fact, govern by putting America and Americans first. He didn’t govern like someone trying to preserve his own power, otherwise he would have made all kinds of concessions in the face of the constant blistering attack on him throughout his presidency. He governed

The temperatures in Texas are on the rise and that’s an excellent thing. It’s been a very tough week in the Lone Star State, harrowing, really, and the fall-out from the winter storm isn’t over. It’s really only just beginning. There is plenty of blame to go around and lots of finger-pointing, as always happens in a crisis situation. Was the power outage caused by the state’s renewable energy sources? The traditional energy sources of natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy? It’s all of those sources. Everything failed at the same time. The very rare extreme winter storm caught Texas unable to keep up with energy demands.
