Texas Senator Ted Cruz sparked a flurry of memes on Thursday after being caught flying to Cancun for a Mexican vacation as his state is suffering through one of the worst winter storms and power outages in years.
The storm has caused a major energy crisis, after as many as 4.4million Texans were left without power thanks to a bungled response from its energy distributor. As of Thursday afternoon, 500,000 are stil without power as stores run out of food.(Snip) Another meme from the Lincoln Project, a Republican political action committee that has targeted Cruz in recent weeks, joked that the senator

So? Going where it is warm seems like a good plan, if you are crazy enough to go to Mexico these days, which I am not.

The optics, as they say are bad, but not as bad as they were for Christie. Cruz is not the governor.

Heard Len Berman going off about this this morning. I don't get it. Cruz is a US Senator. He represents his constituents from Texas to the United States Senate. He has nothing to do with power grids. That falls on state government.

So. What exactly is Cruz suppose to do about the power outages that isn't already being done? Besides, how many without power would be on a flight to a warmer climate this second if they could go? It's not like Cruz is going for a month, he has to be back in D.C. in less than a week for business.

More than likely he had this trip planned and paid for before the storm.

Cruz is a senator. He has no responsibility or power to do anything except talk.

"'This has been an infuriating week for Texans. Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too. With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. 'Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon,' he said. His office would not answer questions about when specifically the trip was planned and why Cruz changed his flight on Thursday morning when contacted on Thursday afternoon. United Airlines sources say he was due to fly back on Saturday but that he changed his flight at 6am. He also claimed on Monday—two days before the trip—that his family didn't lose power or heat and that his children's friends had come round for shelter."

A crisis gone to waste; perfect opportunity for Cruz to be seen rolling up his sleeves and helping out stranded people while deriding on video the causes of the problem. Instead, the left has a shiny object to draw attention away from Global Warming and the Green New Deal, and Cruz has painted himself into a tighter corner as an out-of-touch elitist, while Beto the gigolo multimillionaire is a man of the people.

Yes #8. Ted did it all to himself. Plus, the statement his office came up with pretty sad.

I have absolutely no problem with Cruz taking a break. What is he supposed to do? Photo-ops? Come out with a furrowed brow?

Who cares? If we use this standard why does Chuck E Cheese Shumer spend even a minute away from NY state when crime rates are skyrocketing, businesses are closing, and the coffers are beyond empty?

Much todo over nothing. Texas has its own Electric Grid, to protect oil & gas interests from selling power to the Federal Government grid that would send energy all over the place, at Federally set prices. Plan was not to power all sorts of other states with electricity subsidized by Texas oil & gas owners. Created back with Sam Rayburn & LBJ & other good texas democrats.
Fast forward to today and Grid is still in existence. Difference is State of Texas Governors & House & Senators - not Federal - siphoned off $19 billion to build windmills. Rick Perry deregulating electric market meant any one that owned a power plant - had to sell it at price that would be profitable - whereas before if the Legislature told TXU or HLP to build more power plants to give a 10% safety factor for growth, high demand in summer/winter - costs would be included in the rate base.
This is a STATE issue, not a Federal Issue. Ted Cruz has never held state office, so not a Federal issue.

What was he supposed to do by staying in Texas? But, as they say, it's bad optics.

If I remember correctly, Sen. Cruz' daughters are something like 12-13 years old. I don't know about you, but if my daughters are going "with friends" to Cancun at that age (or perhaps as much as 5-6 years older), they ain't going alone. If Mom can't make the trip, then I guess I can.
Plus, I think they spend their time in DC when the Senate is in session. I don't think the liberals and teachers unions in Va and Md ever bothered to open the schools (with the exception of the payroll departments so that the union goons can get their checks direct deposited to their banks while they vacation in Cancun as well).
Sen Cruz probably ran into a gaggle of union school teachers on the beach in Mexico and they blew the whistle on his "reckless" trip. At least he had the good sense not to do a video from Cancun telling us to stay home like some Democrat politicians (such as the Mayor of Austin) did.

So . . . if only he'd paid attention to "the optics", everyone would love him?
Who gives a crispy crap?

Today's official leftist phrase is "bad optics". My official phrase would have be banned from this site.

Well what do they want Cruz to do? Is he supposed to fix the windmills that the left are so enamored with?

So, alternatively, Cruz could have .... promised to investigate? Or WHAT? He is one of 50 votes, and at least 6 or 7 of those are Dems in disguise and will NOT oppose any of this insane subsidizing of dangerous, expensive, UNWORKABLE frauds that pretend to be "power sources" but are NOT.
