An increasing number of Republican senators are voicing opposition to holding an impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump, leaving Democrats’ ability to swing enough votes for a conviction in doubt.
Twenty-nine GOP senators have now spoken out against holding a trial, according to an Epoch Times tally, arguing it’s unconstitutional to try to convict a former office holder, or a waste of time.
“I think right now Donald Trump is no longer the president. He is a former president,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, arguing parts of the Constitution say lawmakers can impeach a president but they do not indicate “that you can impeach

I’ve been sending letters as fast as I can to let these Senators know how I feel about impeachment. They will lose a lot if they go ahead with this, and if they do, any Republicans that vote for it are done. McConnell is already dead to me. He needs to to lose his position.

Assuming he declines to preside, the absence of the Chief Justice will so visibly underscore the unconstitutionality of the proceedings that a number of Republicans will back off, perhaps even Mitch among them.

Without a president to impeach without the chief justice..without authority to try...this attempt at pre-impeachment is really embarrassing.

Any trial in the Senate would be without legal effect. Since Trump is likely to be acquitted, it will just be a waste of time.

I’m thinking that this impeachment trial could expose this bs narrative of the capital “riot” being started by Trump lunatics. Put all the capital police on the stand make John Sullivan testify show videos of people just meandering by the police like they were invited on a tour. Ask the question Who killed Ashli Babbitt and why. And of course we must ask Are Trump’s lawyers really on his side?

I think the whole thing is ridiculous, as are the Dems and RINOs. but have the trial! Nancy's articles opened the door for Trump to present the facts and data on election fraud and demonstrate how the election was stolen, and his comments did not incite violence, just spoke the truth. With all this out in the open, a case via "writ of quo warranto" (search this word on this site for an article explaining) can be opened.

The Supreme Court just ruled that several law suits against Trump for his businesses supposedly profiting while he was President are now moot.Does that tell you how they would rule on this Congressional lynching.

That is good news for Mitch. He is always eager as minority leader to prove he can govern in a bipartisan manner. Unconstitutional or not full speed ahead! Setting new precedents outside the Constitution every day. It’s only appropriate to have a formal burning of the Constitution and Bill of Rights as soon as possible. Leading the ceremony will be Nancy Pelosi who will have the honor of first tearing them up in shreds then Chuck Schumer can light them on fire while AOC carefully throws an American flag on top of the blaze. Mitch McConnell can stand by with a fire extinguisher in case the inferno gets out of control.

Chuckie Schumer and the RATS want their show trial.
But there's no reason that the Republican Senators (save perhaps for one just to follow what is going on) need to show up except for the final vote NO. I'm not even sure that President Trump should put on any sort of defense. It's the House Managers job to prove their claims. But in the words of Lavernia Berenty and the US Democrat Party, show me the man and I'll show you the crime.

Methinks these wankers are finally getting the message...a bit too late though...any GOP $$ requests go directly to the shredder or the bit bucket. Done with those yellow bellies ......oh, not going to support Trump? Nothing from me to thee...

Despite protestations to the contrary, the democrats are terrified of allowing the democratic process play out by allowing the people to decide for whom they will vote for public office, up to and including the presidency.

You have to admire democrats, kind of. They stick together, like thieves and lemmings. Is it fear or conviction? You would have to ask the rare escapee. No such loyalty among Republicans.

Maybe, just maybe these clowns are starting to see the writing on the wall. Do this, and kiss any chance of reelection goodbye. Plus other actions that might be put in place.

Please Lord let the Republican Senators have a vote and move McConnell out of his leadership post.
Put him in the basement of some old Senate bldg, in a closet like office.

Looks like a growing number of Senate Republicans are not too interested in committing political suicide, as the more than 75 million Trump supporters comprise about 90% of reliable Republican voters. Obviously those Republican Senators are figuring out that they stand a big chance of getting whacked by Republican voters if they assist the partisan Democrats in doing their dirty work targeting Trump.

Yada, yada, yada. Same song, 157th verse. I'm sure the "Giants" of the Senate will stand up for what is right. What you been smokin' boy???...

They actually think they can keep quiet while the American voters were cheated, then act supportive by opposing an illegal impeachment, and we will think all is well?! i've got news, the republican party is dead. All those times we voted because the alternative was worse. Now, I see no difference in the uniparty.

I got a begging letter from the RNC that I returned in the thoughtfully-provided postpaid envelope with a nasty letter and a heaping tablespoon of fine red glitter.

Participate in any trial, Senators, and your gravy train goes off the tracks as the GOPe Express derails taking the class of ‘22 over a political cliff. Mitch and Lindsey have six years...2/3rds have less.

#12 - if they are going to go through the motions anyway. Hopefully the Trump team will use the “show trial” to put on a show. Seems to me that the Producer of the Miss America Pageant, The Apprentice, and a man who knows how to use the media better than most now has the time to focus on producing an amazing show for the senate and those watching.
