San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system has six vacancies for police officers but plans instead to fill those positions with social workers to handle issues involving the homeless and those with mental illness or drug addiction. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the public transit system has $2 million in its budget to fill the vacancies (for an average salary and benefits package worth about $333,000) but will instead hire a supervisor and “20 crisis intervention specialists,” the outlet reported. Last year, the board approved a plan that only added 10 specialists to BART’s bureau of progressive policing.

I used to live in Sf and still live nearby. The problem, especially with SF homeless is so many are mentally ill and or heavily drug dependent. Neither cops nor social workers can help.
The mentally ill need to be in 24x7 care and medicated for their illnesses. The drug addicts who have nothing else wrong with them need to be cleaned up and put in job placement programs doing whatever it is they can do to be productive. Anything less is a waste of time and just goes to further fluff the already very fluffy nests of the Homeless INC. crowd who runs the show in SF taking in million of dollars yet helping no one get off the streets. These people do not want to solve homelessness or help the homeless in any real way.

Get a load of the photo with the article.
BART paying $333,333 (salary and benefits) to BART police officers?
And this:
Members of the Los Angeles City Council also signed a motion suggesting unarmed social workers respond to certain 911 calls instead of police. In July, police in St. Petersburg, Florida, announced they would no longer send police officers to non-violent 911 calls, even though many calls begin as non-violent but can quickly turn.
Police would rather go out on almost any call other than a so-called "domestic disturbance”.
The world has gone woke crazy. What could possibly go wrong? We’ll know soon enough. Then they’ll have to turn tail and go back to their drawing boards.

Kid brother, a psychologist, retired because his personal safety was under increasing threat. (His specialty was in evaluating suicide- risk individuals.)
There will be a change in policy, I suspect. Even San Francisco can't stay crazy.

They'll get some starry-eyed idealists who will get a quick lesson in reality. Like the 20-something teachers fresh out of college who get assigned to inner-city schools. The smart ones will quit, the dumb ones will get killed.

Pity the social workers of San Fran. If they're stupid enough to do it, though. . .

It has always been my unprofessional opinion that beat cops, when backed by the department, are the best 'gateway' to services. They are on the street, they know who is hustling and who is in need. I'm betting that 90% would excel at it. It is why they got in the force..to make a difference at the grass root level.
But until they get support, nothing will change.

Well,
I have a loved on who is mentally ill. If San Francisco is truly engaging with the mentally ill on a social services perspective, then I say, this is great news. The police do actually spend a great deal of time dealing with people who just need "help" in some way or another and got into or will get into trouble unless someone helps them.
Again, if these people will truly help the mentally ill, I'm all for it. This is not the job for the police.

I'll bet that before a month is out, they won't be able to hire anyone for these jobs. A few throats cut will about dry up the labor pool, even in nutso, ultra-lefty SanFran.

After a few of those social workers get their asses handed to them by nut jobs they won’t be able to find any social workers who will apply for those jobs. But they can always import some from China and India.

$333,000 to ride the BART and buses and try to deal with head cases?
Stop and figure. If that's what SF is paying social workers, how unrealistically high is the retirement plan for these folks? And what if a social worker gets decked with a concussion or something of that nature--what then? Well, I expect they get a six-month leave with pay during their convalescence. And what if they can find a physician to declare them permanently disabled by reason of their injuries or stress on the job on the subways? PTSD? 70-80% of salary until age 63, then eligible for enormous retirement benefits? Sounds sweet to me. They'll have applications for these jobs.
Trouble is, when the California retirement fund goes belly up, Biden/Kamela/Obie/Nancy/Chuck will pass a bill bailing out the retirement fund with our tax dollars. Too big to fail.

Perhaps after a few of these deluded idealistic indoctrinated Social Workers pay the price with their lives the stupidity of this line of thinking will become obvious.
