Genuine rigorous testing of educational ideas is rare in America. Why? Because practical testing usually goes against what the professors want to do. Their impractical ideas don't perform well in the real world. For example, Operation Follow-Through was the biggest, most systematic testing in American education, continuing for ten years, 1967 to 1977. This research showed absolutely that common sense, often called Direct Instruction, works best. Quite simply, that's where a teacher teaches, and students learn. Honest educators would say, okay, that's what works best. Let's use it.Our educators said no such thing, which is shocking.

Dr. Thomas Sowell has been writing about the failure of American public education for decades. Teachers' unions, substandard teachers, lack of discipline, too much money pumped in by liberal, low IQ school boards, school psychologists who should not be permitted anywhere near children. It's a recipe for failure and the failure goes deep.

This should be a must-read! Educators KNOW the best way to educate children is to teach them what you want them to know. (Duh.) So a large study was done and the best way was found, and the whole education establishment devoted themselves to debunking it. Click on the chart to see how very superior Direct Instruction was to every other method. This is one reason home schooling is usually so successful -- simply, the kids learn stuff.

Contrary to this author's uninformed spout, Direct Instruction is alive and well. The content may be leftist, but in many (especially urban) classrooms, this is the preferred mode of teaching. Teachers are given their s cript from which they must not deviate. Children are programmed to answer, given limited or no opportunities to ask questions. This is the same method we use to train our dogs. It's Behaviorism. It works quite well to get children to recognize and call out words, for example, and you will get high test scores for word reading. Not so good for comprehension.
I know that this author has a loyal following and he is correct to call out Big Education for indoctrinating teachers into radical leftist think. But when it comes to pedagogy, he hasn't got a clue. What an embarrassment.
Any content can be poured into children's heads through Direct Instruction. Same for Explicit Instruction, which we use to teach more sophisticated cognitive activity.
Too bad Conservatives and Republicans never took the initiative to side with teachers and show them how Conservatism is actually the friend of thinking educated people.
Ramona (the Pest). ps the word "s cript" is 'unallowed'

The purpose of schools is to indoctrinate the students into destructive leftist ideology. I'd say the "educators" have been very successful.

Stir in the Textbook Industry too. We have to reinvent the wheel every 2-3 years.

When I was in elementary school, I struggled to learn reading using the Dick/Jane/Spot/Puff books. I was lucky to be in an upper-middle class neighborhood full of children who also were struggling to read. One of the neighbor mothers started a phonics class after school for her two children and invited the neighbors to include their children as well. It only took a few sessions, and we were all successful readers. My scientist father taught me long division the old way. He refused to have anything to do with "new math."

Sorry, not sure what key I hit, but did not intend to submit.
If this is surprising to you, you should read "Radical Son" by David Horowitz. Many people were sent to the USA in the early part of last century with the specific task to burrow in, become teachers and start to radicalize American children. And it has worked, about half the country is in favor of, or at least not opposed to socialism, which is Communism with a camo paint job.
