St. Johns homeless village; opening delayed

A vandal struck a much-anticipated tiny home village for homeless people in North Portland, damaging nearly every sleeping pod in the outdoor shelter space and delaying its opening, police and county officials say. The person entered the St. Johns Village on Dec. 19 and broke out windows in 15 of the shelter’s 19 newly purchased tiny homes, causing about $8,000 damage, said Officer Melissa Newhard, a Portland Police Bureau spokeswoman. The single-occupancy pods, which are each 8-by-12 feet and feature electricity, heat systems and a built-in bed, had been placed at the North Richmond Avenue site only two days before

I wouldn't be surprised if they are totally destroyed shortly after being occupied.

Likely homeless himself, the vandal is unhappy he didn't get any of the freebies. Most of these people are mentally unwell not simply unfortunate. Bring back asylums and required medication else they will remain sick and we will never get to enjoy our sidewalks again.

Exactly, OP. Why bother to replace some broken windows? I was wondering how much the citizens of Portland and Multnomah County paid for these cute little bungalows but a quick check of the Joint Office of Homeless Services website indicates that they monitor HUD money, among other duties. More than likely, we probably paid for them.

So how many windows does an 8 by 12 unit have? And how is it possible that 15 units with damaged windows cannot be repaired before Feb 1, and why would it cost $8,000? This is nonsense.

#7 - it’s $2000 for the window repair. The rest is so they are not broken again until next quarter.

15 windows in a shack for $8,000. Sounds about right for government work. Too stupid to put Plexiglass windows?

A false perception of truck drivers' experiences and working conditions is fueling the ongoing truck-driver shortage, according to an expert. Tra Williams, CEO of FleetForce, a Florida-based truck-driving school, told Insider: "The problem is the perception that trucking is for people of low skill, low education, who are OK with low wages. All three are factually incorrect." In the US, there is a shortage of around 80,000 truck drivers, Chris Spear, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, recently told CNN.
