A Chicago rabbi has called on social service agencies to help a mother who has been accused of leaving her seven children alone inside a vacant Humboldt Park apartment.Rabbi Michael Ben Yosef, president of Tikkun Chair Inter-National, held a news conference Saturday afternoon outside the Circuit Court of Cook County, where the mother, Jessie Hunt, made her first court appearance.
Chicago police arrested 31-year-old Hunt after officers discovered seven children inside a vacant apartment unit during a well-being check at approximately 4 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of North Trumbull, authorities said.(Snip)Calling for empathy for Hunt's situation, Yosef said she needs help from social services instead of potential jail time.

There was a much bigger problem than just being alone.
FTA:the apartment was littered with garbage, the stove burner was on, and the sink was overflowing.
One of the kids told police that their mother left to go buy a new kitchen sink. The last time the children had eaten was the previous day, prosecutors stated.

We have no idea as to the whole story here. Absolutely none.

The children were in good condition. When I was 14, I was capable of picking up and disposing of whatever was littering the apartment. As I said, no judgment until I know more. What was in this article was insufficient.

Not a lawyer, but think that in order to be found guilty of criminal child neglect, you have to have harmed them. The children were reportedly in good condition, so No Harm,No Foul.
Don't get me wrong, I would fully agree that this is a bad situation, and this mother and her kids need help. What can happen in these situations is that the kids are separated from their mother and split up amongst foster families, which deprives them of each other's support and dramatically increases their anxiety. Find some way to keep this family group together. "Togetherness" is not perfect, but the alternative is arguably much worse.

The children need help from social services, the mother needs to be held accountable for her actions.
And have her tubes tied.

Mom collected food stamps and WIC on the first of the month. She took off to sell it for drugs. She needs to be charged with neglect and child endangerment. No sympathy for her and foster homes probably won't be any worse than how they've been living.

31 with a 14 year old makes her 17 with the first one...and how much does welfare pay for each kid I wonder? 7 different daddies as well? She needs help but she also needs her legs cemented together.

Why doesn't the rabbi take in the children himself and pay for the mother's medical treatment? Asking for social services is cheap and easy moral vanity. The rabbi is all hat and no cattle.

Left to buy a new sink is an interesting excuse. But I agree that splitting up the family is the last resort. There are not enough foster families as is is.

I can forgive you for a major mistake maybe even two. But seven leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Birth control is everywhere and available to everyone. I don't know why she has the need to have sexual relations with seemingly anyone who knocks on her front door but please do not bring children into this world you don't want to care for, can't care for, expect someone else to care for them. I agree we do not have enough information. But unmarried at 31 with seven children says a lot.

Re #7, have you a link for that information? It’s not in this article nor another one linked in this article.
And does anyone here know that she is unmarried?
What ugliness.

No, it isn't a product of "poverty" It is a product of poor choices. Each of those children represented a bigger welfare check. Maybe she went out to spend her stimulus check.
The rabbi knows more than we do. Leave him to help her.

#12, read the final paragraph. Her defense counsel said she is a single mother.
