The New Yorker goes low with
its final cover of the year

Mea maxima culpa, I still subscribe to the New Yorker, as a member of the reading class who dotes on fine writing, despite horrible left-wing views expressed subliminally and liminally at every opportunity. But I had to gawk in disbelief at the cover. t depicts a sepulchral Trump, looking hardly different from Bela Lugosi in the latter clutches of tuberculosis dumping “tax data” into a roaring fireplace in a gloomy cave-like room hung quietly with cobwebs here and there. (snip) On the mantel is a gallon jug container of bleach, with four wine goblets arrayed nearby

The author helped fund this cover, so why is she complaining? I used to visit for the cartoons, but haven't in 4 years since 90% of them were anti-Trump. Quo vadis, Ms. Dreyfus?

I agree that the cover is wretched, but I think the author has mis-identified the subjects. Trump is working the bellows, Guiliani is holding the stack of (probably) legal briefs (not tax data) for fire-building, and the balding "woman" in the wheelchair is Father Time!

I see that The New Yorker is having a tough time finding more slanted, dishonest, foolish, political bon mots with which to delight the more than liberal adherents to the religion that is progressivism. With every printing they testify to the accuracy of President Trump's assertion that the media is a functioning part of the democratic party.

Lots of mistakes in the article. The "sepulchral Trump, looking hardly different from Bela Lugosi" is Rudy Giuliani and the "woman of advanced age works a bellows to prime the fire to ever higher" is Trump. as #3 mentions. The "four wine goblets" are martini glasses. The lampshade is a coronavirus. There's a picture of what looks like Sidney Powell on the wall. Someone upstairs is reading Q posts. Not sure who's upstairs dusting, presumably to hide our president's misdeeds, but they've got that completely wrong; should be the feds dumping dirt. What about the alligator?

A woman works the bellows? A woman in a wheelchair? While the figure in the wheelchair could be an elderly person of either sex, the figure working the bellows is pretty clearly a man. And the 'Bela Lugosi' figure isn't Trump, but very clearly Giuliani. The New Yorker's editorial commentary isn't the only thing off target in this piece. But Merry Christmas, anyway.

A magazine for those who have the “Hate has no home here” yard signs. Only benefit of Covid-19 is the elimination of left wing magazines such as The New Yorker, Newsweek and Time from the waiting rooms of doctors and hospitals. What’s weird is that The New Yorker was once a hefty magazine thanks to advertisers seeking its upscale audience. It is now paper thin as readers and advertisers abandoned it.

#11 nails it: 'A magazine for those who have the “Hate has no home here” yard signs.' A neighbor along my dog walk route has a lawn packed with lighted Christmas-themed decor. They also have tinsel around their Biden/Harris sign on the front door, and another that says "Bye,Don" under a swoop of yellow hair. Prominently in the property's corner along the sidewalk is a Nativity scene. I look at Baby Jesus, the Savior whose mother chose to allow him to be born. What does he think about the people who so openly revel in displaying their support for two soulless Swamp creatures who would have no problem with his skull being crushed or spine cut so the woman wouldn't have to be burdened by his being born? I can't bear it.

We are surrounded by so many weak minded fools. People who whine about TV and then become zombies to it. EVERY liberal goes all in 24/7 with deranged hate for Trump and anyone who supports him. They feed on truly idiotic stories about how he hides tax cheating. A billionaire businessman has the kind of review of his financial dealings that require many highly paid accountants/advisors/lawyers. Do any of these outraged morons think the IRS doesn't spend extra hours pouring over a rich man's return? Do any of them every wonder if any member of congress gets this kind of attention? Of course not. The TV didn't tell them to think about the purely political slant of every neocommunist liberal, leftist, lie. They giggle at very stupid cliches like this while the ruling class destroys their lives. It never occurs to them to thank the man who momentarily called out the jackals of the media and who, for a moment, made the USA a country in control of it's future, instead of a puppet by very sick, dangerous, globalists.

Conservatives are happily gloating over the fact that Andrew Cuomo is at, or rapidly approaching, his nadir. (snip) Cuomo's pandering has always been coarse, heavy-handed, and insincere. Though he is hardly a closet conservative, and probably genuinely supports these policies, it has always been obvious that Cuomo manipulated leftist identity groups so that they would have no alternative but to vote for him and make him governor-for-life. (Indeed, until only a few weeks ago, Cuomo seemed to be a shoo-in for a fourth term). Eventually, though, it became clear that the leftist identity-politics groups were getting tired of getting the pimp hand from Cuomo

Meghan Markle, it seems, isn't much of a scholar. While much of the focus has been on her barbs accusing the British royal family of abnormal interest in her baby's skin color and denying him a title and personal security protection supposedly because he is black and they are racists, what's striking to me is how unprepared she was for the royal role she sought when she married Prince Harry. And not just ignorant, but willfully ignorant, proud of her ignorance, flippantly stating she never did "any research," as if that's something to be proud of.

I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. And the problem is that, when it comes to that left-wing diva, Meghan Markle, it’s hard to believe most of what she says. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.

Though the populist tide seems to have ebbed, it will rise again, and soon. The problem that ignited populist sentiment in the first place, whether on the left or the right, remains: the country’s economic and financial system has failed much of the population and is rigged to the benefit of a government-business elite. Resistance to this inequity elevated Trump and pulled the Democratic Party to the left and will continue to roil American politics until things change. The economy’s “rigging” has developed gradually over time and often from the best of intentions.

No, conference goers didn't gather to spread conspiracy theories. No, they didn't bow down to a golden statue of Trump. And no, the stage wasn't designed to pay homage to Nazi symbology. Fascism, a form of big government, is hated among conservatives. Outsiders in the mainstream media really piled on the hate. "There will be no policy debates," claimed an MSNBC opinion columnist. That's false. The truth, it seems, was of no value in reporting on this year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Among speeches from high-profile Republicans were dozens of panels and debates on a broad spectrum of policy issues — which was the purpose of the gathering.
