The coronavirus pandemic appears to have been the icing on the case in terms of New York's declining population, and it could impact the state's political influence in future elections. According to preliminary US Census Bureau data released on Tuesday, more than 126,000 people moved out of New York state between July 2019 and July 2020 - the biggest population drop of any state this year. (Snip) Every decade, the US goes through a process called "reapportionment," during which the population of the states are assessed to see whether each individual state should gain, lose, or keep its number of seats

Living in that state has become almost unbearable for many. I guess if you lived in a nice area or town in upstate NY it's still OK but anywhere near NYC is tough....taxes, crime, the Chicom Flu restrictions, etc. I can't imagine that there is anything left of their tourist industry.

It's a better place than ever to retire to- you don't need much money because it'll be a very short retirement. Other than that, what's not to like? I think the people that voted cummo and de stuhlio into power must be getting exactly what they wanted.

Killer Cuomo listed a whole bunch of people who didn't belong in "his" state. Looks like they listened. The restaurant shut down in NYC that he has imposed has more to do with his pissing match with the mayor. He ruined enough businesses in the spring, now he is out to complete the task.

That’s why the NY liberal Democrats are always trying to lure more and more illegal aliens there, as they are counted in the census, and by their added population numbers determine how many congressional seats are allocated to NY.

There's less here than meets the eye. New York was ALREADY expected to lose a seat, well before COVID became a factor. It would be (good) news if NY were to lose TWO seats, and shrink to 25. Fact is, the headline should be, for the first census since 1950, NY will only lose one seat, if that turns out to be the case. For comparison, since their high of 45 seats through World War II: After the 1950 census, New York lost 2 seats (down to 43); After 1960, down 2 more (to 41); After 1970, down 2 more (to 39); After 1980, down 5 (!) (to 34); After 1990, down 3 (to 31); After 2000, down 2 (to 29); After 2010, down 2, to the present 27. I think the Business Insider whiffed badly on this one.

My dad left NY in the early 50’s. Today the grandkids kids live in TX knowing nothing nor caring of NY. Their standard of living far surpasses relatives left behind due to zero state income tax, endless jobs, fewer government rules and regulations, acknowledgement of right and wrong, the right to bear arms and of course they still execute really bad people. $2 gas and the finest continually expanding freeway system on the planet creating new communities at every off ramp and exit means you have endless opportunities to move on and try again. I am so thankful my dad left NY long ago and me, my kids and grandkids don’t live there.

With the November election just weeks away, Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams is dealing with an unusual political problem. She has become a star on the national political stage. But in her own state -- where she has proved in recent presidential and Senate contests that she can get out the vote for Democratic candidates -- she is struggling to gain momentum for her rematch with Republican Governor Brian Kemp. One problem is tepid enthusiasm among a key segment of the Democratic base: Black men. One-third of Black men registered in Georgia haven’t voted in the past several elections, with pollsters

Ukraine - The past few hours have seen wave after wave of explosions, not just here in Kyiv, but all across this vast country, from Lviv in the west to Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the south. For those of us who were here when Russia's full-scale invasion began in February, there's an element of déjà vu. We've been told to spend as much time as we can in the basement, as further attacks, using missiles and drones, are expected. But this is also different. The explosions here in Kyiv are much closer to the centre. Not distant

President Joe Biden and top administration officials are seeking to downplay the decision from OPEC+ to cut daily oil production by 2 million barrels after steadily decreasing domestic gas prices boosted the president and Democrats' electoral odds heading into the midterm elections. The decision comes shortly after Biden traveled to Saudi Arabia, where the president met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and asked Saudi officials to ramp up production as a means of easing global energy prices amid the war in Ukraine. Publicly, the White House is putting on a strong face in responding to the new cuts. Biden

A week after proposing to levy a new tax on oil companies, California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday called for state legislators to convene in Sacramento for a special session in December to hammer out the plan. In response to a historic surge in gas prices in the Golden State, Newsom last week proposed a tax on oil companies to fund rebates for California taxpayers getting squeezed at the pump. During a press gaggle on Friday, the Democratic governor announced the special session for Dec. 5 — about a month after dozens of new lawmakers will be elected to office. Newsom

It was the late 1960s, before the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, and abortion was illegal in Pennsylvania, where she

When gas prices rise, it instantly fuels political rhetoric about price gouging and the need to help motorists pay at the pump. As gas prices hit record highs in Los Angeles County on Wednesday, a pledge by OPEC+ to reduce its oil production by 2 million barrels a day brought new concerns about more economic pain to come. California is facing surging oil prices in the wake of shutdowns at several oil refineries that produce a specific grade of fuel for the state.
