Well, it had to happen eventually.
In our new woke paradigm, actress Scarlett Johansson can’t portray a woman identifying as a man. Nor can James Corden be a straight actor playing a gay character. Thus, we take an obvious next step: Deaf characters should only be played by deaf actors.
Such is the premise of a December 17th letter picking up steam on the web, which condemns the casting of actor Henry Zaga.
Henry can currently be seen as Nick Andros in a new adaptation of Stephen King’s bestseller The Stand on CBS.
In the series, Nick is deaf.
But there’s some unacceptability afoot: Henry, as it turns out, can hear.

Aw come on! Marlee Madelyn can only handle so much work at a time! :) Although I love seeing her.

So all the movies adapted from books where they mix in actors of different races to make the cast more diverse, even though there was no such diversity in the original work... That's not going to happen any more?

King has written a few good novels.
'The Stand' was not one of them.

So it is okay for the PC disease ridden Left to cast black actors to play a historical character as though it was for real, but Hollywood can't cast a hearing actor as a deaf person? Come on Lefty whiners, it is called ACTING. Not real life. Marlee Matlin would probably find no favor with these people either because she wasn't born deaf. She lost almost all her hearing at age 18 months due to a fever and severe illness. IIRC, I think she uses some kind of high powered hearing aids in her private life, but she prefers to act as a deaf actress. She is wonderful. So wonderful you almost forget she is deaf.

It's called ACTING. It was O.K. with the dems when caucasion founding fathers were played by black men in Hamilton. One way street ?

Do these self-righteous fools really have nothing better to do. Talk about an easy, pampered life when this is one of your main concerns. So we can’t do Macbeth without an all Scottish cast? I remember the movie Broken Arrow with James Stewart as the Indian Agent and Jeff Chandler, a white Jewish actor playing Cochise. Both fine performances but I am sure would now draw protests from the usual unemployed, unemployable leftist halfwits that scour the news looking for something to be offended about.

I thought Jack Reacher was supposed to be 6' 5"? I'll bet some of those actors pretending to fly planes don't even have a pilot's license. Oh, and Robert Downey doesn't have a Iron Man suit that works like that.
The thing about critics is they NEVER create anything themselves. Why pay attention to the opinion of someone who can't do the thing they complain about, and today everyone thinks a critic has to be negative. I guess when you have nothing else going on, tearing down someone who made something, makes a small person feel like they are momentarily in charge and important. Ignore them. Good creative work that isn't 'woke' will find a large audience who just wants to be entertained.

Carried out to its illogical conclusion black opera singers should only appear in Porgy and Bess and only Japanese sopranos can play Madame Butterfly. The great Leontine Price made a career of singing all the great roles despite being black. But now we must all appease the racist Philistines on the Left. BALONEY!

Would critics boycott a CBS series about Superman if the actor couldn't bend steel with his bare hands fly faster than a speeding bullet and leap over buildings with a single bound?

Then why bother having actors since nobody is allowed to act (i.e. pretend to be someone they are not). From now on, all plays, shows, movies, etc. must use the actual people who are being portayed. That should work out really well (Haha Haha hah!) And it could get rid of activist Hollyweird once and for all. (!).

The Left operates on a few axioms that are just loony. First, it doesn't take a Black Man to understand the plight of a Black Man. We all have the facility to do that. It's called empathy, and it's a fundamental quality of our humanity. If we didn't, the library wouldn't have a fiction section.
Second, you don't need an 18th century sea captain to portray Captain Ahab. It's called "acting." It's the portrayal of someone OTHER than yourself.
What it does demonstrate is how successful P. Barry was in converting millions to the Church of Identity Grievance. L. Ron Hubbard would have been green-eyed with jealousy at the success of the Democrats.

Next, there will be complaints that there are not enough roles for deaf (is it ok to use "deaf"? How about auditorially impaired?) actors?

Besides being pathetically idiotic, it appears that Hollywood is so bereft of creativity and ideas that all they can do is produce remakes. The first Stand was a mini-series and I thought it was well done and followed the book, which I loved. The worst part of the original was King’s own acting. He insisted on being in the cast and was hideous.

So following that logic, transgenderism is dead. You can't be or play something that you are not so logically if you are a man you are a man and if a woman a woman. There solved it.

The Hemlock Society has issued a statement demanding that only REAL dead people should portray those who die in the movie and television industry.

So an actor who isn't deaf can't play a deaf character? It's called acting. Well if the critics are so upset by this, then explain to me why a black actor can play Alexander Hamilton on a Broadway stage and nobody says squat.

so when an actor portrays a blind person, does the actor have to be blind? If so, the Ray Charles Story better be re-made.

Funny but unrelated side note, the wife and I were on vacation and took a walk around Banghor, Maine with our Golden Retriever. The dog took a dump right in front of King's house. I thought she showed a remarkable sense of humor.

I guess then to be totally "woke", only real murderers can play murderers in a movie: only real criminals can play a criminal; only real rioters can play rioters; only real rapists can play a rapist; only real zombies can play a zombie etc etc. This is how stupid our society has become.

The left seems to be acceptable as men portraying women and taking over women's sports, so why would they be upset over a tv show (aka make believe, acting). What is being a lefty without being outraged about nonsense?

Playing oneself is naturally where one is truest to form: no acting required, Still looking as young as he had a decade earlier, Audie Murphy, awarded the Medal of Honor--he could have been awarded several MoHs--for conspicuous heroism on the battlefield in World War II, played himself in To Hell and Back (1955). Some of those who had served with Murphy said that the movie actually downplayed what he did, and said that if the film had shown all that he did, nobody would have believed it.
Tennesseans knew about Sheriff Buford Pusser before Joe Don Baker played Pusser in 1973's Walking Tall. The shocking August 1967 assassination attempt on him that took his wife and nearly killed him was big news. The sheriff had had most of his face below his nose shot off. After he got out of the hospital his lower jaw was wire mesh and his mouth was an ugly gash in his lower face. In the summer of 1973 Sheriff Pusser was at Nashville's E.B. Smith Chevrolet promoting a book that had just been written about him. The movie had barely scratched the surface of what he had been through with the smugglers, moonshiners, cutthroats, and ne'er do wells down on the Mississippi border near Corinth. There was much more to follow, only this time the sheriff would play himself. Two more Walking Tall movies were in the works when the sheriff, a notorious leadfoot, crashed his Corvette and died in 1974. Maybe it wasn't meant to be. Swedish actor Bo Svenson played Pusser in the sequels. For me, the original movie with Joe Don Baker was best.
Incidentally, Sheriff Pusser was huge: about 6'6", 250 pounds with the large machine tool hands it took to handle the Colt .41 Magnum that was his preferred sidearm. He signed the book I had just bought and because there wasn't anyone else waiting to meet him, we chatted for a couple of minutes. He was about the most physically imposing man I ever met*, but he seemed to be a nice, humble man in every outward way. Still, I'd have hated to be on his bad side! Around the time I met him, he was about to sign a contract to play himself on screen. I wish he had had the chance.
*Sheriff Buford Pusser had survived eight gunshot wounds, seven stab wounds, and twice being run over by a car.

I read the stand while on my second Naval deployment. That was also the time that I liked Stephen King, his books and his movies. Pet Semetary scared the crap out of me. Speaking of crap CBS, King, the movie and Mop Head Whoopi Goldberg starring in it all now fall into that category.
