Northwestern University wiped one of its former lecturers from the school’s website after he penned a controversial Wall Street Journal editorial arguing First Lady-elect Jill Biden shouldn’t use the title of “Dr.” before her name. Journalist David Gura noted late Saturday that Joseph Epstein appeared to have been removed from the school’s website, where he had been listed as an “emeritus lecturer of English.” The college also issued a statement saying it “strongly disagrees” with Epstein, who argued Biden should drop the title as she’s not a medical doctor. “Northwestern is firmly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and strongly disagrees with

Cancel Culture, Biden Style.
Jillie doesn’t realize we all feel the same as Epstein about her absurd, unseemly (and unprofessional) insistence upon being addressed as “Dr.”. She is common and she shows it. (“Common” was the worse insult my late Mother could lay on a woman..)

This woman, Jill Biden, is total phony baloney. Her "degree" is exactly as Epstein described. It goes to the basics of her character, which is that she is a low-life with an inferiority complex, trying to be important. I would trust her as far as I could throw a blacksmith's anvil.

There are millions of "Doctors" out there flaunting dime store credentials from all sorts of institutions that have no accreditation to issue any such degrees. Plenty of second-rate preachers, in particular, with doctorates from matchbook cover Colleges of Divinity.

I read the opinion piece, though I already did love Epstein, who is funny and literate---and that was what this piece was like. DR. Jill Biden at her insistence. (The ex baby sitter who fell in love with Joe, although she was already married to someone else...guess she loved her hair being breathed on?). Epstein simply says what it USED to be like to qualify for a doctorate, and also assumes that the ph.d. is a bit different, less rigorous re: education (what my college roommate who was a teacher with the degree, called Kiddy Lit). And obliquely points out that since Dr. Jill Biden and DR. Bill Cosby do have doctorates in something a bit less rigorous, they shouldn't be parading the degree when those with MORE rigorous degrees stay silent.

Airlines refuse to book people with Ph. D'S as "doctors" ... they only want to know if a real deal medical doctor is on board in the event of a medical emergency.
In the past, Ph. D's were only referred to as "doctor" ... based on their advanced "doctoral" degree ... in academia.
Above poster is correct ... Jill Biden in common ... as is the entire family.

She should use the title of Doctor only in the context of academia. Outside that environment, she is just plain Mrs., and she knows it. We received an entire lecture on doctoral ethics, and it included rules on the very limited use of the title. She herself should put a stop to the incorrect and unethical use of the title outside of an academic context, and not leave it up to others to correct it.

In the movie "Gone With the Wind" Butterfly McQueen as Prissy said she "don't know nothing about birthin no babes." So Prissy wasn't a doctor. If she did would that make her Dr. Prissy? I refer to all my medical doctors with the title Dr. because they have needles and know how to cause me excruciating pain. Is Dr. Oz a real doctor? A long time ago you had to have a high school diploma for various jobs. Now it's a college degree. I had obnoxious teacher in college who demanded that she be referred to as Dr. A student made the mistake of calling her Miss and she screamed "Don't call me Miss. I didn't miss anything."

OK, all you PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) folks.
Who gave you your PhD? Most of the time, I'm not aware of exceptions, the existing PhD's in the same discipline review your Thesis to determine if you are worthy of the PhD title...this of course is after you paid to go to the school of choice and got good enough grades to graduate...
SO, Who gave THEM their PhD's? (Bear With Me.....) Well it goes back to who was a PhD in their department at the university at the time...and who gave those PhD's THEIR PhD's? same answer...and it goes back in time to when there were NO PhD's...Here's the Problem. The whole string of events is tainted because there WERE NO PhD's when this fiasco was started...someone that learned a discipline by the seat of their pants became a PhD or Doctor etc. by their skills. That was how this all started. Then the PhD's decided they needed to have some rigor and control...and viola PhD's were certified and it went on from there...
Bottom line the entire PhD situation is a pile of Excrement and they have all been lying to all of us. Just because someone else says you're a PhD doesn't mean squat because the lineage is not and never was formalized, that came later.
Now back to Jill's PhD...Guess what...it's FAKE just like all the rest.
Next question...........

For those without university degree, especially advanced degree, please get the facts straight.
First off, a Master Degree requires a "Thesis," whereas a Doctoral Program requires a "Dissertation." As one who holds but a Masters Degree in Engineering, I will admit thatI learned more in my first 2 years on the job than in 6 years at University, but it was the University that taught me how to think like an Engineer. It was the Masters Degree that gave me specialization and research work to perform. For Doctors of Philosophy, Science, or Engineering the experience is such that it prepares them with the skill of how to research a subject from scratch. It also gives them training to be instructors at the undergraduate and graduate levels, after they perform their Post-Doctoral work.
As I posted on another thread, not all Doctorates are the same, and the lowest of the batch is an EdD.

Re #8, her degree is a EdD. Doctor of Education or somesuch. NOT a PhD.
Go and read Epstein’s op-ed piece at WSJ. You can read the very funny opening paragraph before you hit the paywall…and it was that paragraph that most are ranting about. Nevermind… here it is:
Madame First Lady—Mrs. Biden—Jill—kiddo: a bit of advice on what may seem like a small but I think is a not unimportant matter. Any chance you might drop the “Dr.” before your name? “Dr. Jill Biden ” sounds and feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic. Your degree is, I believe, an Ed.D., a doctor of education, earned at the University of Delaware through a dissertation with the unpromising title “Student Retention at the Community College Level: Meeting Students’ Needs.” A wise man once said that no one should call himself “Dr.” unless he has delivered a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.
I taught at Northwestern University for 30 years without a doctorate or any advanced degree. I have only a B.A. in absentia from the University of Chicago—in absentia because I took my final examination on a pool table at Headquarters Company, Fort Hood, Texas, while serving in the peacetime Army in the late 1950s. I do have an honorary doctorate, though I have to report that the president of the school that awarded it was fired the year after I received it, not, I hope, for allowing my honorary doctorate. During my years as a university teacher I was sometimes addressed, usually on the phone, as “Dr. Epstein.” On such occasions it was all I could do not to reply, “Read two chapters of Henry James and get into bed. I’ll be right over.”

This "Dr" issue has always been one of my pet peeves. Anyone who is not a medical doctor should not be called doctor outside of the area where the degree is awarded; certainly not in the general public. Call them professor or some other honorarium but not Doctor. That Medical Doctor degree takes many more grueling years to earn than any other degree and carries more weight. I'm off my podium now.

2nd post apologies, (sigh) but, #22,
The word Doctor comes from the latin, docere, which, translated, means 'to teach.'
Physicians, a few hundred years ago, didn't have a good working title, so they stole 'doctor' and added medical to it - thus, Medical Doctor.
A professor, Ph.D. in Germany, Germany invented the Ph.D., by the way, is called Herr Professor Doctor, and his wife is called Frau Professor Doctor.
How rigorous is the Ph.D.? In my first semester of doctoral studies, I went to the University book store and purchased 80 required books for one course. Granted, that was unusually high, but most of the courses were rigorous, and when I finished my coursework, I had to pass written comprehensive examinations,(three 8 hour exams over a five day period._and then defend in front of my doctoral committee. And only then was I a doctoral candidate. (at that oral defense, I also had to have a dissertation proposal to defend.)
At that point, I began my dissertation research, the subject of which had been stewing in my brain for about three years. Original research is challenging.
At the end of my studies, I had to defend my dissertation in front of my 5 member doctoral committee. And while the process at my university was private, at some other universities, the doctoral dissertation defense is a public event, where the student can be challenged by audience members. And there can be some petty jealousies, yielding wonderful arguments.
I hope my brief explanation was helpful.

#24 I did not intend to diminish nor in anyway discredit your accomplishment. I come from a family of several real doctors and 4 Ed.D and Ph.D's. One of my little sisters headed a department at SJSU but never referred to herself as Dr outside of the confines of the University. Our father, who was a real MD. received the respect he earned and was always called doctor as were our uncles who had the same level of study.

To toss something else into the pot, in the UK surgeons are addressed as Mr., Miss, Mrs., Ms…. not Dr.

My understanding is that the man taught at the school for 30 years, then the 'erase' him because of one newspaper article that they disagree with?
So much for 'diversity' in thought and opinion,
So much for 'Free Speech'.

I have a Ph.D. I have never used the title Doctor outside of my professional capacity. However, I have to address this idea that somehow "Doctor" only applies to the healing professions. The reality is that Doctor is an academic degree. The profession of someone holding the M.D. degree (and possessing a license to practice) is not "doctor," it's "physician and surgeon." The Ph.D. degree is far, far older than the M.D. degree. Ph.D. holders were teaching and conducting research long before physicians were given M.D. degrees.
To answer a question posed above, no, Jill Biden does not have a Ph.D. She has an Ed.D., Doctor of Education.
