Breakdancing has been confirmed as an official Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee’s pursuit of urban events to lure a younger audience saw street dance battles officially added to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games. The IOC executive board also confirmed skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing for Paris. Those three sports will make their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo Games which were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ahead of the announcement, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach praised the additions, describing them during an interview in 2019 as events that will make the Summer Games "more gender balanced, more youthful and more urban."

I have followed Break Dancing on and off for many years. Two things 1) It is definitely a dance art form 2) It requires extraordinary strength and gymnastic abilities to practice it on a high level. Good call by the IOC. Check it out for yourself on YouTube..

Why not? Break Dancing requires a lot of athleticism. I would put parkour in as well.

As #1 suggested, I viewed break-dancing videos on YouTube. Although these videos were labeled "super" and excerpts from "global competition," I am not impressed at all. I don't care for pelvic thrusts, crotch holding, and thinly veiled gang signs. We saw better break dancing twenty years ago on Bourbon Street. It was certainly cleaner at that time.

Synchronized swimming requires excellent physical skills - it is the most demanding sport I can think of.
break dancing originated as a way to beg for money in the streets.

The breakdancing fad hit its peak in 1984. Rather behind the times aren't they? But then again, we really are living in Orwellian times, so something from 1984 might be appropriate after all.

This is similar to getting snowboarding included way back when. The US pressures the powers that be to sanction events which we will supposedly dominate. And just like snowboarding, watch as some other country kicks our butt in break dancing.
