The first public oversight hearing throughout the pandemic is set for Tuesday when members of the Illinois Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee will meet virtually to focus on a COVID-19 outbreak in LaSalle. (Snip) More than 150 positive COVID-19 cases have been reported at the LaSalle Veterans’ Home, the pair said in a joint statement. The Illinois Department of Public Health shows 187 reported cases at the home and 24 deaths. Schimpf said in the past eight months, it’s clear to him the focus of COVID-19 mitigation needs to be on congregate settings, not clamping down on economic activity through capacity restrictions at private businesses.

I suspect that any outlet calling itself 'center square' is likely neither 'centrist' nor 'on the square'. I'd like someone to publish the deathtoll at that same home over the previous 3 or 4 years from pneumonia and flu. Truth be told, those are probably the cause of these deaths; but Covid pays better. And sounds scarier.

I'm not sure what to say. I am not an attorney and certainly have no idea what a case like this entails. But let the poop hit the fan. I just cannot believe that after everything President Trump has done he was beaten by this demented man and the weasel. More than once I heard or read where a dem operative said that at first blush it will appear that President Trump has been re-elected. But they would stop him with the mail in ballots. That's where you can cheat easily. Too much weirdness going on. There is no way you would vote for Biden only and not vote down ballot of the other dems. It would just not happen. Why vote for Biden and not vote for the people he would need to turn us into a socialist nanny state? And with the Republicans winning so much it's like having a split personality. Vote for Biden and then vote for Republicans. I don't think so. Dear, Lord, Georgia. Do the right thing.

Abortion service Marie Stopes International is dropping the name of the woman who created Britain's first birth control clinic because of her advocacy of eugenics. The charity will instead be known as MSI Reproductive Choices from today. Miss Stopes, who lived from 1880 to 1958, was an advocate for the sterilisation of people considered unfit for parenthood and was a member of the Eugenics Society.(Snip) Her views on eugenics were also promoted by the Nazis in Germany, and in 1935 she attended a conference in Berlin to promote 'population science'.

On the promotional trail for his new memoir “A Promised Land,” former President Barack Obama sat down with “60 Minutes” for an interview that aired Sunday. (Snip) Through private donations, the Obama Foundation has raised more than half of the estimated $500 million cost for the project, but that price tag doesn’t include infrastructure improvements that will be paid for by taxpayers. Due to a lengthy federal review process and pending litigation related to the Jackson Park location, the center has yet to break ground.

If counter-protesters had triggered fighting across Washington, DC, in the wake of the January 2017 Women’s March, the media would have erupted in fury. Yet the morning after Antifa types went after MAGA marchers in the nation’s capital, the press obsessed about . . . Kayleigh McEnany’s estimate of the crowd size. The difference, plainly, is that no one felt the need to confront the anti-Trump marchers. But a significant element of the left seized the opportunity to harass and even assault the pro-Trump crowd.(Snip)The thugs are encouraged by leading Democratic politicians who insist that reports of violence is “fake news,” and by media outlets that label left-wing riots “peaceful protests”

A cancer charity started by Joe Biden gave out no money to research, and spent most of its contributions on staff salaries, federal filings show. The Biden Cancer Initiative was founded in 2017 by the former vice president and his wife Jill Biden to help find “solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention” and help find a cure, but gave out no grants in its first two years, and spent millions on the salaries of former Washington DC aides it hired. The charity took in $4,809,619 in contributions in fiscal years 2017 and 2018, and spent $3,070,301 on payroll in those two years. (Snip)But under grants distributed, it listed zero.

Give ’em hell, Leta. A Nebraska morning show host is getting her day in the sun after a supercut of her refreshingly devastating celebrity interviews from the ’70s and ’80s went viral this week. Leta Powell Drake spent decades producing and hosting segments for a Lincoln, Nebraska, CBS station — most notably as the blunt interrogator of big name actors from Tom Selleck to Tom Hanks. “You don’t consider yourself a great actor, do you?” she asked a laughably-serious “M.A.S.H.” actor Elliott Gould, just after reminding him that the “M.A.S.H.” television series which he didn’t appear in went on to make “a fortune.”

Just a few years ago, a shooting on a Chicago-area expressway would be a major event, the type of tragedy that would lead every newscast in the city. Now they happen with such shocking frequency that road crews have standard procedures for blocking the highways so police can search for evidence. And drivers see them mostly as frustrating incidents that wreak havoc with their morning commutes.(Snip)There have been 99 expressway shootings so far this year, far exceeding the 52 Chicago saw in 2019, and 43 in 2018. The Illinois State Police say 62 individuals have been wounded, and six of those died. And while no highway is immune, one stands out.

This is why you don’t swallow conspiracy theories whole-cloth without waiting for evidence to be presented. Amazingly, it appears that Trump’s own campaign is now disowning Sidney Powell’s fairly out there claims about German servers and millions of switched votes. And I don’t say that as someone who wouldn’t want to believe it if there was proof, but there was obviously no proof and plenty to the contrary. Here’s the Trump campaign today essentially telling Powell to go jump in a lake, which is probably the most surprising development of the last several months. Well, this is awkward.
