Trump shoots down
the 'Flying Geese' theory
of international trade

Original Article

Michael Lind, a professor at the University of Texas (Austin), is a proponent of a national industrial policy. In an article appearing in American Compass, he focuses his attention on the flaws of the reigning paradigm for trade used by globalists: the flying geese theory. (snip)The way this is supposed to happen in theory is that advanced economies like the U.S. outgrow their "old" industries like, say, textiles and steel and develop new industries or services. The outgrown industries are abandoned and passed down to developing nations.

Any industry can always be updated. If a company is making textiles, they should never need to send the industry elsewhere. What's needed is a better way to make the material. There isn't any old industry that can't be improved. It's like saying essential jobs are more important than non essential. There's no such thing as a non essential job. This neighbor of mind at UT doesn't seem to believe in improvement.

The problem with this theory is that an advanced economy that outsources its manufacturing soon finds itself at the mercy of a growing industrial economy. It then finds itself unable to aquire face masks, medicines and medical supplies during an epidemic. What happens when that same advanced economy providing services finds itself at war with a manufacturing power house. For that answer, I refer you to 1865, and1944.

Ummm, #1, I highly recommend that you actually READ the article: Michael Lind is OPPOSED to the flying geese theory and FOR the national industrial policy. He points out many flaws in the former theory.

The 'Flying Geese' theory is not only wrong, but has served as a cover for outsourcing much of our industry to other countries. By shipping these 'dirty' industries off shore, companies could get low wage workers, ignore worker safety and dump toxic waste directly into rivers and streams. The workers in this country could be redeployed to 'clean' office jobs which were lower in number and thus paid less due to the glut in available labor. By over regulating our industries and giving favorable import conditions to foreign imports push industries out the door and over seas.

There is theory and then there is what actually practiced. Corporate CEOs would ram this down employee throats demanding they sacrifice their own livelihoods in the name of outsourcing. Telling us how good this was for us. Not only was old technology outsourced, so was new technology. Nevermind that the new employees lacked the necessary skills. The other thing sacrificed was innovation. For the people pushing outsourcing, profit margins was a primary goal, and innovation was secondary. After a couple decades of this, these companies were no longer the leaders in their fields, and competitors had passed them by. That's what happens when a company is run by looters and had looters as investors. If outsourcing top tier jobs wasn't bad enough, the same people wanted to import low paying labor to replace higher paying labor. if one thought this would produce cheaper products, the answer is not always. The goal was to drive up profits, not produce cheaper products. Why produce a product at a lesser price when the consumer was willing to pay more? Who benefited from all this? It wasn't America or American workers. People lost their jobs. The economy took a beating. It lasted decades. It took that long to debunk things like the flying goose theory. Who benefited from this? The list is incredibly short: Corporate looters and lefty foreign interests. Thank God for Trump. He's one of the few sane voices in this.

#1, you should actually read the article. Lind states the commonly held theory, and then he explains why it is wrong and not useful, and harmful. Lind is absolutely right. The globalists are either intending to destroy the American middle class (seems likely) or so totally uncaring about America and Americans that there is literally zero consideration given to the harm done to the country and the workers when moving jobs overseas, chasing lower wages, places where polluting is tolerated. A HUGE flaw in this stupid theory is that it assume that all countries are bland, unpolitical and have no national interests or goals of gathering political power. THAT has never been true in history, and is not true now. Trusting others with critical production of goods is to hand over control to them....like our pharmaceuticals being made in China. China is our enemy, and they are simultaneously destroying our economy while they build up their own, to fund their military. We were stupid to EVER do any business with Communist China. They have been our enemy ever since Mao drove the Nationalists offshore to Taiwan.

Conservatives are happily gloating over the fact that Andrew Cuomo is at, or rapidly approaching, his nadir. (snip) Cuomo's pandering has always been coarse, heavy-handed, and insincere. Though he is hardly a closet conservative, and probably genuinely supports these policies, it has always been obvious that Cuomo manipulated leftist identity groups so that they would have no alternative but to vote for him and make him governor-for-life. (Indeed, until only a few weeks ago, Cuomo seemed to be a shoo-in for a fourth term). Eventually, though, it became clear that the leftist identity-politics groups were getting tired of getting the pimp hand from Cuomo

Meghan Markle, it seems, isn't much of a scholar. While much of the focus has been on her barbs accusing the British royal family of abnormal interest in her baby's skin color and denying him a title and personal security protection supposedly because he is black and they are racists, what's striking to me is how unprepared she was for the royal role she sought when she married Prince Harry. And not just ignorant, but willfully ignorant, proud of her ignorance, flippantly stating she never did "any research," as if that's something to be proud of.

I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. There’s something unattractive about a mature woman marrying into the British Royal family with one of the world’s most expensive weddings, hanging out with the Queen, living in insane luxury…and then whining non-stop about the horror of her life. There’s something even less appealing when that woman accuses the Royal family of race hatred. And the problem is that, when it comes to that left-wing diva, Meghan Markle, it’s hard to believe most of what she says. After weeks of hype, CBS finally televised Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.

Though the populist tide seems to have ebbed, it will rise again, and soon. The problem that ignited populist sentiment in the first place, whether on the left or the right, remains: the country’s economic and financial system has failed much of the population and is rigged to the benefit of a government-business elite. Resistance to this inequity elevated Trump and pulled the Democratic Party to the left and will continue to roil American politics until things change. The economy’s “rigging” has developed gradually over time and often from the best of intentions.

No, conference goers didn't gather to spread conspiracy theories. No, they didn't bow down to a golden statue of Trump. And no, the stage wasn't designed to pay homage to Nazi symbology. Fascism, a form of big government, is hated among conservatives. Outsiders in the mainstream media really piled on the hate. "There will be no policy debates," claimed an MSNBC opinion columnist. That's false. The truth, it seems, was of no value in reporting on this year's Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Among speeches from high-profile Republicans were dozens of panels and debates on a broad spectrum of policy issues — which was the purpose of the gathering.
