Austin has seen a spike in violent crime and officer retirements after the city council voted over the summer to immediately slash $20 million from the police department budget, becoming the first major Texas city to do so.
In August, Austin City Council members voted unanimously to cut about $150 million, or roughly one-third, from its police department and allocate those funds to areas like violence prevention, housing and mental health services. Only about $21.5 million was immediately removed from the department's funding in part by canceling three upcoming cadet classes and slashing overtime expenses.
"It is demoralizing for the officers. It is angering for the citizens

Who ever could imagine a push to defund law and order?

I live in Austin. Fortunately, the violence has been pretty much kept to the downtown area. I would guess that is because, as lie-beral as Austin is, a lot of people own weapons in the suburbs and know we have both the "castle doctrine" and very supportive state government officials to back us up if we have to use our weapons to defend our neighborhoods.
Good conservative state officials make a huge difference, and I hope people will realize that on election day!!!!!

I'm so glad I do not live there anymore!! It is a beautiful city, but the leftists are turning it into a hellhole. It appears that they are trying to outdo San Francisco for stupidity.
Everywhere you look, there are homeless and beggars, and you cannot do anything.

Rant ahead: In Austin, you cannot get plastic bags at the grocery, because plastic is evil or something. However, almost everywhere in Austin is within 15 minutes of a different county, where you can get all the bags you want. So, not only do you get your bags, but your sales tax goes elsewhere, and the pollution you spew out driving, mostly stays in Austin.
In an additional marvel of stupidity, the city provides free dog poop bags from dispensers located everywhere. So, I can carry my dog poop in a plastic bag, but not my groceries.
End rant!

Wherever Liberals are put in charge things rapidly turn to chit. Cities like Austin, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and others are microcosms of things to come on a national level if Beijing Biden and Heels Up Harris get elected.

Can we assume they left enough money in the police budget to protect the pols, and their private streets?

What did they expect would happen?
Maybe they were hoping community organizers would put together volunteer social worker crisis quick response teams that never materialized. Oh I know, all the money they saved by cutting the police can be used for 24 hours a day basketball courts all around the city. Now that should cut crime down to nothing.

Back home where I grew up we have t-shirts that say "Keep College Station Normal". I have always avoided Austin, anyway. Even the first president of the Republic of Texas, San Houston hated Austin.

Golly. Stop paying people and supporting them and they vote with their feet? Who would have thought?

I was born in Austin, but never lived there. In our isolated ranch country, Austin was the nearest place with doctors and hospitals, 350 miles. Austin was a different place back then, just a nice college town with good medical facilities. Now, it's a hippie paradise with homeless people everywhere. I have a cousin who headed the "naturlsts" group, suing the county to keep nudist park naked. That's how weird Austin is determined to remain.
I just drive on through these days. No need to stop in Austin except for something like an O.Henry pun-off in Zilker Park.

#4: Load up on free, unused poop bags and head to HEB to do some grocery shopping.
Glad I got the heck out of their a long time ago!

This is SHOCKING!.......
Not, actually.
Anyone with half a brain or more could have predicted this. Of course, leftists don't have half a brain, let alone more, or they wouldn't be leftists.
