Maine has seen a stunning real estate boom as buyers from New York City, Boston and Washington DC flee for quieter pastures amid the pandemic, causing home values to surge 17 percent, supply to hit a historic low and properties to fly off the market in a matter of 11 days. In the spring Maine saw a startling decline in sales at the start of the pandemic, but by summer time a wave of buyers came in from out of state looking to ride out the COVID-19 crisis. The value of single-family existing homes jumped 17.39 percent in August this year compared to 2019
Keep looking north. Please!

What is really happening is that those productive inner city dwellers in the Democrat run big cities fear that if Biden wins the election, that there will be little effective law and order where they are currently residing, and don’t want to be around when the barbarians attack and destroy their current residence neighborhoods.

And how many of those folks will continue to vote far left, antigun, etc in their new state?
I hope that these are good people, but I am skeptical. Idaho, Montana and Colorado have been moved farther left by folks from the coasts bringing their leftist ideas with them.

I remember Maine. We spent several glorious weeks with friends in their Vinalhaven Island family enclave and then another few weeks at Acadia National Park (marred by my badly sprained ankle :-( ) The neighborhoods with rows of white houses with black shutters and open connecting yards with no lateral fences … But oh so cold in winter. And Maine natives who aren’t keen on anyone from anywhere else. (No, no one knew I was from California and my traveling companions were from Maryland and the UK. And we were all nice well-behaved and courteous visitors.) If you want warm and fuzzy, Maine is not the place for you.

Oh please spare me as I live here in Maine and the few of us who are Republicans are fighting democrat progressives already. When they come from NY, MA,CT, etc. has changed this state since I moved here 15 years ago. The dems are ruining it when they move from their high priced homes and find relatively lower cost homes here but it’s killing those of us with the high taxes and lack of smaller homes and affordable ones. I love it here even though I’m from “away” and CA no less. But we are sick of our beautiful state being bought up by people who care less what the cost of living is and their politics are mostly hard nosed democrats. Even my family here are the opposite of me when they have a Biden/Harris sign in their yard.

An interesting question, when do you actually become a resident?
After all, most colleges have a certain period, generally 1 year, before you can obtain in-state tuition rates, right?

We will see. Many of these people are like the people who see a TV show about the country life and think, 'that looks like fun.' Then they live it for a while and realize they have no real world skills, but more importantly, no physical work ethic. Maine has great vistas near the coast, but the rest of the state is country and city folks often find country is ok to visit, but living there is a kind of punishment for someone expecting a coffee shop on every corner. Also, the weather can kill you. Driving around in winter takes more skill that a suburban commute and being isolated in a Maine snowstorm is no joke.

Most of homes they’ve shown in the article are dramatically overpriced, especially the one for $750K. Boy, did they get ripped off. I hope they realize that you can’t fit in like you can in large urban cities. They‘ll always be tourists.

It's not just Maine. Here in western Colorado, noticing a lot of cars with Illinois, New York, California, Washington, and Massachusetts license plates on I70 pulling in to get gas. Thankfully, they appear to be gravitating to the Peoples Republic of Denver/Boulder. My town is too small and rednecky for most out of staters. I did manage to have a quick chat with a guy, a native of New York, at the gas station and asked what brought him out here. He was checking out several states and wants out of NY badly. His main complaints about NY? High taxation, out of control liberal state government, rampant corruption, and excessive regulation.
