The English department at Cornell University has voted to change its name in an effort to distinguish English the language from English the nationality.
The department at the Ivy League university in New York voted to change its name to “the department of literatures in English” during its first faculty meeting of the fall semester earlier this month, the student-led Cornell Daily Sun reported Wednesday. The change would help to eliminate the “conflation of English as a language and English as a nationality,” English professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies Kate McCullough told the newspaper.

I suggest that anyone so stupid as to not understand a school's English Department is referring to the language and not a nationality has no business being in college.

I thought they had already gotten rid of all of the dead white guys' stuff. Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou seem to reign supreme these days. I'm pretty sure you can't refer to their material as having been written by dead black gals.

that's the crux of our problems today. the universities are completely useless in engendering useful values in our young population. young minds are easiest to mold because these young people, for the most part, have no life experience(s) to set a value system for themselves. mandatory military service should be the norm, not the exception. my best life lessons were learned while I was in the US Army.

It frosts them that one of the world's most dominate languages springs from a land of Caucasian Anglo-Saxon inhabitants. Before long some remote tribe that grunts and points will be crowned as 'the most splendid' language, and students will be required to learn it.

It is a shocking admission of the faculty's estimation of the of true capability and intelligence the student body. Maybe they ought to change the university name to Cornell Continuation Learning Center. High school graduates will not be accepted.

Andy Bernard, do you still work in the admissions office at Cornell? Still bleed "Big Blue"? Dwight said the students need remedial classes if they don't know the difference between a language and a nationality. Jim, Pam, and I agree.

It must have been causing the English Department staff to lose sleep every night, worrying about how confused the snowflakes would be. There would be no safe space in the department for them to cower....

How stupid!! If a college student doesn't know the difference between the English Department and the English of England, then that student has no business being in "higher" education... but, truly, who would want to be in a class with perfessers who think the differentiation needs to be made.
Cornell has sunk to a new low !

Why not abolish the Department? That should partially atone for over two centuries of insensitive behavior.

not exactly on point, but, when our four year old came from Russia and first learned English, he was watching TV one day when a British person appeared on screen. Our son listened, and then announced, 'He's talking fancy!"

College Englilsh Departments are the most radical Bolshevik of all departments
But there is no integrity among communists.
If you hate English so much, stop speaking it. Stop writing it.

You sort of have to admire the vast amount of money to attend this college to 'earn' such a worthless degree. Starting off life with that kind of judgment does not bode well for the future.
