Don’t call it a “mockumentary.” Best in Show, Christopher Guest’s brilliant canine comedy that turned 20 this month, is many things — an eternally funny send-up of American dog shows, a perfect vehicle for the late, great Fred Willard, the film that cemented Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara’s strangely enduring knack for playing a married couple. It may even be the greatest dog movie of all time, in large part because it’s not really about dogs,

Loved that movie - now I've got to rent it on Amazon, or something!

Hmm. Pretty far out of my arena. I had to chuckle when the mentioned the "other great movies by."...what's his name".
Failed for me. Never heard of the director (I pay no attention directors, in general, only know about a few), never heard of any of the actors, never heard of the movie, or the other movies by the director.
So....it may be a funny movie, and if it comes up somewhere, I may not turn the channel. I do like dogs.

Christopher Guest is a British peer. He is the 5th Baron Haden-Guest and can be addressed as Your Lordship. He was one of the musicians in This is Spinal Tap (which is hilarious even though it was directed by Rob Reiner). He is married to Jamie Lee Curtis and they have been married 36 years - one of the longer show biz marriages.

OP, you and I have had political differences, but I absolutely love it when you post these articles. Best In Show was hilarious, as are most of the Christopher Guest movies. Almost all of the actors in them are big-time liberals, but are terrific improvisational actors, and funny as he!! So far, (knock on wood) the movies have not been political. Having worked in theatre for many years, Waiting For Guffman is my absolute favorite. His last one—can’t remember the title—was my least favorite, but I still enjoyed it. Catherine O’Hara is a gem. Thanks for the momentary break from politics.

I absolutely loved that movie. Christopher Guest is a brilliant writer and skewerer of the pomposity of those shows. I thought the characters were wonderfully well written. If you haven't seen it, you have to watch it. For one thing, you would never know that Guest is actually British and does American accents very well.

#4, I'd have to care more about movies.....and I just don't make the effort to find "great movies" because I don't really care that much for the entire modern swath of them. Certainly there are definitely some movies that I enjoy and I do go to the theaters to see a few selected movies per year. Usually only on recommendations of friends and family. Some family members a huge Harry Potter fans.....which I can take or leave, don't dislike, but if I never see another one, that is just fine, too. Wouldn't cross the street to see one for free, for example. But, I helped a relative make a VERY elaborate Harry Potter themed wedding with a LOT of props that I helped with. They like it, I love them, so I help out and never disparage their interest.
But I have other things that I often would rather do, and much of the kinds of movies that many people find "wonderful".....I do too, but also a goodly portion just don't grab me.
My most recent favorite movie about dogs was "A Dog's Purpose" which I really enjoyed. But, I have no clue who the writer or directors are. I did like Dennis Quaid's part in it. A great movie, and if you haven't seen it, you should.

And, not to beat a dead horse, (probably too late) if this Guest guy is married to Jamie Lee Curtis.....that rolls right around to why I am so ambivolent about modern movies. JLC is great playing some movies, like her performance in "True Lies".....outstanding.
But I find that as a person she is a raving, hateful leftist lunatic like most of the Hollyweird crowd.....so that just sours me on all the whole movie thing. Occasionally, there is a gem that escapes, but it seems rarer and rarer these days.

If any of you love Guest’s films and haven’t seen it, go to YouTube and type in “Wizard of Oz Focus Group”. It’s not even two minutes long and is a perfect condensation of his humor.
