A 16-year-old student learning at home in a virtual high school chemistry class was told he would be kicked out of the class if he didn’t remove a “Trump 2020” campaign flag from the wall in back of him in his bedroom. The boy’s mother told ABC10 that he left the Zoom meeting being held for his Colusa High School chemistry class before he could be removed. She said, “I made it very clear that when he repositioned the camera, either the flag needed to be removed or not in the background or she was kicking him out, and she gave him 15 seconds.”ABC10 noted, “Another student in the classroom

Unless schools make kids have a distinct uniform background for Zoom meetings, unilaterally-
What is in a personal home is zero business of teacher.. kids could have stopped being live streamed- teacher could do a bunch of other tasks..
But - if said student had a BLM, a Planned parenthood , a Harris/Biden sign- or an LBGT sign- would there have been an issue?

This sounds like teacher preference. Teachers need to realize the virtual classroom is not the same as their physical classrooms, and they need to get over themselves. Teachers and school administrators need to remember who pays their salaries; they need to get in line just like they demand of their students.

The student handbook includes: “Student expression on school or Internet websites and online media shall generally be afforded the same protections as in print media. Students’ freedom of expression shall be limited only as allowed by Education Code 48707, 48950, and other applicable state and federal laws.”
The administration apologized. Apparently the problem is solved, the administration gave the teacher an excuse, and the publicity let's us know about yet another stupid California school teacher anti-Trumper.

#4: In a zoom class, the teacher is the host of the meeting/class. She has the ability to move a student to a waiting room or remove him from the meeting, with no chance of him getting back in. She can take him off video and mute the audio where he cannot be seen or heard by others. She can block the chatroom too. I agree the teacher is probably an anti-American Trump-hating lib, but it’s her classroom and the student can’t do much about it other than put the her on the spot with bad publicity.

Was he joined by his friends in singing an Ode of praise to Trump, as did the parent/teacher-induced kiddie fans of Obama? Nope. He's just a teenage kid, now, sad to say, learning about the ugly Democrats who demonstrate to us every day, how quickly they'll exercise dictatorial powers if they get their hands on the levers of power again.

The next time tax payers are hit up for more funds for education, remember that they had enough money to donate $32,000,000 to the dems.

Looking at those union contributions (94/6 split) give pause to consider how that translates in the classroom. I think the Dept of Ed should investigate the schools to determine if the teachers are bringing their political views into the classroom as those numbers suggests. If so, then to the extent there are their should be withheld until the schools have fully restored the rights of free speech and all other rights due a student. I also think that because of the mission of public schools the schools should be held to a higher level of scrutiny. Moreover, I think that public schools should be required to post the students' rights and what action students may take if they believe their rights have been violated. This involves federal issues, federal rights that are being denied and, given the importance of education, the results should hard, fast, and painful for any violation. I also think that the extent of the federal government should not be in the education business. Their proper role is the protection of their constitutional rights.
This kid was bullied by an adult who has power and authority over her charges and she is abusing such. There is a lot of this going on in the public schools and it is past time for the Trump administration to set the standards for the adults that run these union reform schools - I know they don't use that named any more, they have "progressed" simply by changing the name. There are some still some around that continue with the "reform school" name - there always some one didn't get the word. I just thought the original worked better here.

Number 7 - my grandchildren attend school in California (SFBay Area) and I have been in the room and heard the teacher tell the Zoom class ‘“You must have your camera on.” I have been told by my grandchildren that they must have their camera on for their classes or they are not counted as “present.”

That's just plain asking for a lawsuit. I hope the kid gets lots of money for his mental assault from the school.

Thanks, #12. The teacher insists on the camera being on, but the student can't have their own home decorated the way that they want.
These are totalitarian thugs, given power by the state. The teacher needs to be fired.

Rumor has it that the 'teacher' counted to 10 and then paused to take off a shoe to finish counting to 15.

As I see it #5, then in the case that she can remove this student at his/her discretion because of the student's background, then I say it's time for all students to return to the classroom. This is the student's home. I believe the teacher was out of line.
#1 is correct. This teacher threaten this student on what basis, guidance, or restrictions that he needed to comply in order to participate in the zoom classroom? From what I understand, it was her personal restrictions or bias.
