Americans seem to be listening to more vinyl records amid the pandemic. In fact, vinyl outsold CDs for the first time since the 1980s, according to a recently released mid-year report from the Recording Industry Association of America. The report underscoring the state of the U.S. music industry captured how people's music listening has changed during the coronavirus crisis.

Vinyl records are like Rice Krispies. They go snap crackle and pop.
/remembers buying a zero-stat, a record cleaning kit, and spending time calibrating the strobe on the 33.333 rpm turntable to insure it was turning 33.333 rpm.

My grandmother loved Swing and Big Band music, and we grew up listening to it on Saturday nights when we were young. I recently found some old Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Ella, Sachmo, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and Nina Simone records and bought those before I bought a record player. I used to have an Earth Wind & Fire (my favorite!) collection, but I gave it to my brother who made the collection disappear. . .ugh! I found a few old albums, but I bought a few remastered versions of EWF (my time) along with the Isley Brothers and Al Green (my mother's time). My daughter got me interested in returning to vinyl; she likes Jazz mostly. The vinyl craze was taking shape before the fake virus, and it's getting harder and harder to find the real stuff.

Ds, a late teen, has a huge vinyl collection. He enjoys the sound of music on vinyl and the whole turn table aspect of it. It's very old school. No computer chips needed. He has rummaged through bins and boxes in "antique" stores and goodwills for years now. Vinyl has been growing in popularity for quite a while, no connection to China virus.

Wow! Interesting to see Vinyl Records return to popularity. I grew up with 45's (the kind with the little plastic insert)! I used to have a couple shoe boxes with my favorites, but alas, raising a family finally made me grow up and put them out on the Garage Sale table! How I regret doing that!!

This has more to do with the decline of CDs than with the rise of vinyl.

Earlier this summer I was at an antiques mall and walked out with a stack of 78 RPM discs, most by Bing. Vinyl is for amateurs. We true connoisseurs go for shellac!

I think there are a lot of people that just download music and make their own CDs

Back in the day, that's all we had. Still have most of my old albums. You just crossed your fingers that it wouldn't skip fresh out of the sleeve....usually on your favorite song.

In the day, the best sound quality was from reel-to-reel. My college roomie had a great set up and it was the way to go. Yes, vinyl was a lot of snap, crackle, pop and there was a cleaning solution and pad which helped a lot. When CDs came out I was skeptical, but ultimately I was impressed with the quality. IIRC I purchased my first CD in 1987. Count me as one who hates to see CDs go for the same reason I still buy DVDs on occasion, and that is, I don't trust the provider to disappear my favorites as has happened with some of my dvr'd shows. So, I still like media in the hand.
