James Mattis Contemplated Going
“Seven Days in May” On President Trump

From almost before President Trump took the oath of office, major national publications were running speculative pieces on how a Republican administration could remove President Trump from power. (Snip)The idea that Mattis took the job as Secretary of Defense, requiring President Trump to ask for a Congressional waiver for him to do so, and then treated the man so shabbily behind his back makes me think one hell of a lot less about Mattis. Secondly, Jim Mattis is Roman Catholic. The National Cathedral is also a) pagan Episcopalian and b) nowhere near either the Pentagon, the White House, or Mattis’s quarters. The rules are different for retired military officers than for ordinary bears when it comes to “taking collective action” against a sitting president. More than concerning...

To me, Mattis revealed his deceitful character when he was in command of Camp Rhino in Afghanistan and failed to release helicopters to pick up wounded Special Forces personnel after a 2001 friendly-fire incident in which he allegedly said "I’m not going to send anything until you can assure me that the situation on the ground is secure." Damned good thing the amazingly courageous Dustoff pilots in Vietnam didn't think that way or there would be a lot more names on The Wall. Sorry, Jimbo, if you were a bad soldier, you're an even worse politician.

Well it will be interesting what the obviously unhappy and lonely Jim Mattis has to say about the sedition allegation against him in the book? As an allegation such as that is very ruinous to a military careerist. You can bet that President Trump has learned his lesson regarding dealing with retired Admirals and Generals who are all partisan politicians in their own rite, having been risen into the “Stars” by their own special “rabbi(s)” in the Congress who expect their political support in return. Bottom line retired Admirals and Generals should always be considered to be unelected military politicians, and should not be nominated or appointed to civilian positions in the US Government.

FWIW, I read some time ago at a reliable source that Mattis, McMaster, maybe a few others, were recommended to Trump by Condoleeza Rice. Mattis never disguised his enmity toward Trump. Coats would have been seeking revenge. Not hard to believe except the bit about the National Cathedral.

(hit submit too soon) A commenter below the article has this to say. Sounds more than plausible: Mattis, by all accounts that I have read, was a good general. His men liked him again according to what I have read. Mattis problem, like so many war time generals, is they need a war to shine. Yes they care about loosing soldiers but not as much as they need a war, loss of life is part of the deal. War mongers don't make good politicians. They can't organize a raid to take out their opponents. They have no inert ability to compromise. Because of what they were the only law they know is the ones they made. War mongers need to retire to growing gardens and thinking about the great battles other men fought and died in to make them famous.

Have to wonder since he had to get special waiver, if some hinted to Mattis that he would likely be called to return that favor, and when some started to see the other attacks weren't working, they reminded Mattis he needed to act. Thus, there would be others involved. Starting to discover all of the folks who were not trying to help this President, or their country, but working to undermine the Office of the President of the United States of America.

Statements in Woodward's book prove to me only that they are there. I would not give any credibility to ANY any statement in Woodward's book without other evidence. Therefore Mattis gets my benefit of my doubt. I doubt Mattis said President Trump is unfit. Saying that Trump is unfit would show either that Mattis is a dismal judge of Trump's fitness (which seems unlikely) or that Mattis said that out of malice or spite. Therefore either way such a statement by Mattis puts Mattis in a very bad light. I also doubt that Mattis made any statement about removing Trump from office. Mattis has more common sense than to make any such statement, especially to ANYONE who might repeat the statement whereby it might end up in a Bob Woodward book. Woodward is a hyper-partisan anti-Trumper who is trying to promote sales of his book. He probably needs more money to support his lifestyle and his (really impressive) abode in expensive Georgetown. [I believe Woodward still resides in Georgetown. I used to walk by his abode many times. It's an impressive address!] I hope most people will give Mattis the benefit of doubt. I think Mattis is being trashed (collateral damage) by Woofward because Woodward is trashing Trump. The more I know about Woodward the less respect I have for him.

#3, Mattis’ refusal to send support to Camp Rhino, is in the tradition of his predecessors at Khe Sanh , in Vietnam. The SF camp at Lang Vei was under attack by tanks (which MACV HQ didn’t believe existed) and when called for support, the Marine commander feared an ambush, and refused. I heard part of the fight on live radio. I’m still disgusted. Mattis was/is a “legend in his own mind.”
