Air Force One is already one of the fastest passenger planes in the world—but the Pentagon wants to make it a lot faster. The U.S. Air Force recently awarded a contract to the aviation firm Exosonic to begin developing a presidential aircraft that can travel at supersonic speeds. The research award, reportedly worth $1 million, will fund work to “modify” Exosonic’s existing plans for a supersonic commercial plane into a proposal for a presidential-grade aircraft. In a Twitter post this week, the Air Force’s Life Cycle Management Center said the contract is intended to “develop a low-boom supersonic executive transport aircraft

If we are to get our airlines and travel industry back from the damaged caused by the Wuhan virus, the federal government has to stop using its expensive fleet of private jets and start flying commercial. I realize that this increases security risks, but there can’t be a two tiered system of travel. If a cabinet officer or general is afraid to fly commercial, then either use teleconferencing or demand that the feds do a better job of tracking down the threats to our airlines.
As to AF1, we just agreed to spend at least $3.6 billion for two more of these behemoths, so don’t spend anymore until the country is back to normal.

Bathhouse Barry and his entourage of butt kissers could have used a plane like that. He could have doubled his number of vacations.

I cannon envision a supersonic plane anywhere near the size of the present Air Force 1. I flew on the Concorde and it was only 4 across with an aisle in the middle and held only 100 people in order to make Mach 1.

Were it up to me, I'd make "Air Force One" a good old DC3.
Nice and slow, the pilots can stick their heads out the window and check the landing gear and it's fun to fly, like riding a cow.
The president doesn't need to go anywhere "supersonic." The thought of this makes bubbles pop out my nose.
Give him a rowboat. It worked for George Washington, yes?

Oh, C'mon man.....the Dems have told us that Bush, Sr. flew to the middle east and back in a SR-71 decades ago.
Of course, that was just another lunatic fantasy of the Dems, like so many other of their lies.

Why is this needed? With communications reaching the speed of light no matter where you are and even when your standing still, why does the plane need to travel faster?

As CNN conspiracy theorists will tell you, the POTUS already has at his disposal such a craft, known as the SR-71. The theory goes that it was used to fly VP-elect, George H.W. Bush to Paris for super secret negotiations with Iran for release of our Embassy hostages then get back in time for the evening news announcement.

#4 - Agree. I drove past a Concorde sitting on the other side of the fence at JFK many years ago and was stunned at the small size of it. Can you even stand up straight in it? To design something the size of a 747 that can reach mach speeds would be a multi-billion dollar DARPA project. To what end?

EVERY Airforce aircraft that the president flies in is Airforce 1. The term Airforce 1 is a call sign for any aircraft that the president is currently traveling in. The 747's that we know as Airforce 1, are not called that when he is not aboard.
That said, the president does not always fly on the 747's. He will fly on any aircraft that he chooses or is appropriate for the trip. I dont see any real issue with a supersonic aircraft outfitted for the Presidents use. I imagine that it wont be as large as a 747, but outfitted with the necessary communications etc. I can see where having an aircraft like this would be useful for time critical face to face meetings. An aircraft like this could easily reduce the travel time to Asia, currently an entire day round trip, in half or better.

#9, it is more like a big bizjet, nothing remotely the size of the 747.

Why not? Just print more money; regular slobs will pay for it through inflation. Meanwhile, the same idiot Pentagon now admits that China is on track to become a global superpower with its military buildup, all done through obscene trade deficits and the US allowing them to steal our military and trade secrets at will.
