Englewood Cliffs, N.J.–A New Jersey teen thought she was only exercising her First Amendment right when she organized a protest in support of Black Lives Matter. Not long after, she received a bill for thousands of dollars in the mail from the mayor, CBS2’s Kiran Dhillon reported. After watching thousands of Americans show support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Emily Gil, 18, was inspired to hold her own rally at home in Englewood Cliffs.(Snip)
A few days later, Gil said she received a letter from Mayor Mario Kranjac, billing her for about $2,500 worth of police overtime used during the protest.

If she requested a permit for the event she should have been made aware of the charge for police . I’m sure bill be either forgiven or a ‘Go Fund Me’ account will be setup to handle it.

She don't care as long as somebody else pays for it. She had her Instagram moment.

I’m guessing she didn’t bother to read the fine print. Welcome, young lady, to the real world of adult responsibility.

Paying for police protection isn't necessary in order to express your First Amendment right to free speech! Gil can express it any time she pleases, as can anyone else.
Causing an expense for taxpayers is not a right. Typical, expecting someone else to pay for her little adventure!

The headline makes it sound like she is a child, but she’s 18 and therefore an adult. Good for the mayor!

Welcome to the real world honey where you pay to play. Why should people pay for you to speak, they may not agree with you so pay your own bills and then you are welcome to whine all you want. At 18 it is time to grow up.

I used to organize large events for our village and some things that were sponsored by our church like picnics or our big Las Vegas nights. Any time we had an event that would or would involve a lot of people we paid extra for police presence. Many times we paid off-duty officers $50-$75 an hour to be there. Of course nothing that we did ever attracted a hostile hate filled crowd, but the police kept our local drunks in line.
Recently some kids from the high school put the word out on a BLM march they were organizing. This was right after the weekend that the violence moved out of the city and into a few suburbs. Immediately, the police department contacted the parents of the kids and, along with other parents, met with the kids and came to an agreement to hold their march but in an organized way. They had to get a permit (just like anyone else) and agree to pay for any extra municipal services that might be used and...have proof of at least $1 million in liability insurance (Just like everyone else). One of the parents took the responsibility of the costs and insurance and the march was held, peacefully. It allowed the kids to do what they wanted to do but they also learned that respecting the rights of others was as important as their cause. The kids were also very surprised when bus loads of outsiders arrived. The police checked ID's and sent those people packing.

There ya go! This is why we have laws requiring a LEGAL PERMIT for peaceful assembly! From now on ANY and ALL BLM affiliated protests need to charge that multi-million dollar organization for the cost of police activity AND any damages incurred during BLM riots.

This is genius! Somebody needs to put up a bond that the protest will be "peaceful." Bond plus expenses for overtime law enforcement presence will put the organizers on notice that they are primarily responsible for their "peaceful" exercise of their 1st amendment right. It might also deter some of these morons that aren't really there to protest but to loot and riot.

Emily Gil, an 18 year old kid who presumably has her food and shelter paid for by her parents, wants to demand that her town accept more low income blacks without any concern beyond the inflow. Will crime rates go up? Will utilities be oversubscribed? Will streets be able to handle the load? Will education for taxpayers’ children be negatively impacted? In Emily’s charmed little world, who cares? She’ll be off to college soon so what does she care? If Engelwood becomes a dump she’ll just go somewhere else and rent and then strike an empty but heroic pose there.

I never realized that America had so many stupid white girls although this one looks at least half Asian. Why do you think it is okay to disrupt your entire community to put on a circus for some silly cause that you believe in and very few others do?
I recently visited a small town where my daughters grew up. One of their former high school friends who got married right out of high school, promptly moved in with her husband into her parents' house and had several children while both of them were unemployed, had a big BLM poster in their front yard. This is obviously a shared blame with inept parents but how can people live in this greedy, parasitic way? She would be one to organize a rally in an instant but that town is full of deer hunters who would not hesitate to put a quick stop to it. Racism is not the problem, dimwitted people are.

A Republican would probably get the death penalty in the same case, not a rescind from the mayor.
