Lord & Taylor, one of the country's oldest department store chains, is going out of business after filing for bankruptcy earlier this month. The retailer was sold just a year ago for $100 million to Le Tote, a San Francisco online clothing rental company, by Canadian parent Hudson's Bay Co. Lord & Taylor will permanently close its remaining 38 stores and shut down its website, the company said Thursday. It is currently holding going-out-of-business sales in stores and online. Founded as a dry goods store in 1826, Lord & Taylor has struggled for years. But the pandemic has changed the

My late beautiful mother-in-law and dear friend was the dress buyer for Lord & Taylor many years ago. She had unerring taste. She got to know designers - Bill Blass was one of her favorites and she often dressed herself in his clothes. She went on to have her own shops in Kennebunkport, Maine, and Delray Beach, Florida in season. Pat Buckley was one of her customers. I heard of L&T’s decline into ordinariness a few years ago. I saw the same thing in Neiman Marcus in Houston. And in the I.Magnin and Bullock’s Wilshire stores in Southern California. We know where ordinariness takes fine stores.

The bigger issue is that the companies are no longer their own companies. They are owned by conglomerates that drive them into ordinariness while still expecting high prices based on the legacy reputation of the original company. Decisions are made without regard to customer service or a longer term survival strategy. I bet the company would have gone bankrupt anyway because customer and employee loyalty aren’t there. A big corporation not being able to get through 6 months of COVID is an excuse. Every nickel was probably already squeezed out of the organization, even if the buyer lost their investment.

Loved Lord and Taylor. I didn't usually go there for my everyday attire, but when I needed a Special Occasion dress for a Black Tie dinner or wedding, that was the store I went to first! #1 is right, once a high end store starts to carry what any other store might have, it loses it's "Special" status! Marshal Fields was another store that was known for it's beautiful clothing and High End Home goods. It also went to carrying things that we could find at Carsons. I'm hoping Dillards is watching and won't let it happen to them!

Back in the 1980's and 90's, when we still dressed professionally for work, L&T was my store of choice. At some point though, L&T lost what made it special, the merchandise wasn't much better than what you'd find at a Carson's or Macy's.

In the 1980s when I was a just starting my career, L&T was my dream store, where I'd do lots of window shopping, and buy a few things. I still remember a Tiffany design umbrella I bought there, and how special it was to me. When everything started coming from China and companies went public and conglomerated all the great stores became as others have said, ordinary. You can't stay in business when your direct competition is Kohls and Amazon and they're selling exactly what you're selling for a fraction of the price, with free delivery. These days I'm shopping on Poshmark and picking up the older "vintage" fashions that were actually quality made. I guess that's the way of things, but it saddens me that these great stores will now only exist in memory.

Like communism, massive debt only works when it's done on a large enough scale. Especially so if you can just keep printing money to pay the bills.

Very sad. I have often said we love the Royal Family because we used to dress like them. It's horrible to see men in expensive suits and they have no clue a tailor can hem the pants. We are not well dressed or well mannered today. Good thing they closed the store on Fifth Ave last year before the mayhem and pandemic.

A defense attorney for the fired Minneapolis police officer charged with murder in connection with the death of George Floyd is asking a judge to drop all charges, arguing the 46-year-old man's death was allegedly from a drug overdose and not caused by the officer planting his knee in the back of Floyd's neck. KENOSHA, Wis. — Scores of police supporters gathered Sunday in downtown Kenosha where protesters have been demonstrating against police brutality since the shooting of Jacob Blake last weekend. Democratic strategists are worried scenes of violence in Kenosha, Wis., and the “defund the police” debate could give Republicans and President Trump a boost with suburban voters. The issue has come back to the forefront amid new incidents of violence, property destruction and protests this week after another unarmed Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot in the back by a police officer. Some Democrats worry the continuing unrest could give Trump an opening with swing voters in Wisconsin and other key states that voted for Trump in 2016. “Republicans are very wisely pouncing on this moment and using that language
